Bible ReadingExodus 33:1–17Verse 1: The LORD said to Moses, “Depart; go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give it.’”
[09:24]Verse 2: “I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.”
[09:49]Verse 3: “Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.”
[10:02]Verse 4: When the people heard this disastrous word, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments.
[11:04]Verse 5: For the LORD had said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do with you.’”
[10:11]Verse 6: Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.
Verse 7: Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.
[11:19]Verse 8: Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent.
[11:31]Verse 9: When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses.
[11:31]Verse 10: And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door.
[11:45]Verse 11: Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
[11:52]Verse 12: Moses said to the LORD, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’”
[13:18]Verse 13: “Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.”
[13:36]Verse 14: And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
[15:09]Verse 15: And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.”
[16:54]Verse 16: “For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”
[17:05]Verse 17: And the LORD said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”
[17:45]Exodus 34:6–7Verse 6: The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”
[18:56]Verse 7: “Keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

Interpretation questions- Why would receiving the land, an angel, and protection still be a “disastrous word” for Israel if God himself did not go with them? What does this reveal about what God’s people are meant to value most? [10:22]
- Moses speaks to God with sorrow, urgency, and honesty rather than pretending everything is fine. What does this scene suggest about the kind of prayer God welcomes from his people? [19:48]

Application questions- What is a “golden cow” you are tempted to grab onto when you feel anxious or uncertain—comfort, control, money, approval, a plan, or something else? What makes it feel safer than trusting the living God? [27:49]
- Where are you currently living in a messy middle—between what was and what will be? What part of that situation feels most uncertain or draining? [34:11]
- Moses prayed, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.” Is there a decision, responsibility, relationship, or challenge where you need to pray that kind of honest prayer this week? [29:23]
- God tells Moses, “I know you by name,” and promises him rest. Where have you been carrying a weight as though everything depends on your strength, cleverness, or strategy? What might it look like to receive God’s help instead? [22:49]
- Moses had a tent of meeting, a tangible place where he met honestly with God. Is there a place, time, or simple rhythm that could help you make room for real conversation with God this week? [34:26]
- Communion remembers that Jesus’ body was broken and his blood was poured out so sins can be forgiven. How could remembering Christ’s sacrifice change the way you approach God with failure, doubt, anger, or need? [32:35]
- God’s presence is what made Israel distinct from every other people. In practical terms, what might it look like for God’s presence—not success, comfort, or having all the answers—to shape the way you live this week? [17:16]
