[01:20] [09:35] [12:32] [13:49] [17:27] [19:13] [21:20] [31:56]Exodus 17:1-7 “All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, 'Give us water to drink.' And Moses said to them, 'Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?' But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, 'Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?' So Moses cried to the Lord, 'What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.' And the Lord said to Moses, 'Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.' And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, 'Is the Lord among us or not?'”
[13:49]Ephesians 3:20 “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,”
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 “For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, 'This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.' For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.”
Observation questions- In Exodus 16, what exactly are the people complaining about, and how do they talk about Egypt when they are afraid of not having food? [12:06]
- What does God provide in Exodus 16, and what reason does he give for that provision?
- What instructions are given about gathering manna, especially for the sixth and seventh days? [17:27]
- At the end of Exodus 16, what is Israel told to do with some of the manna, and what does that object become for future generations? [31:56]
Interpretation questions- Israel’s grumbling comes after rescue, not before it. What does that suggest about the way fear and scarcity can distort memory and make an old bondage look safer than it really was? [12:06]
- God gives bread “so that” Israel will know that he is the Lord their God. How does that deepen the meaning of provision beyond simply getting needs met? [16:28]
- The Sabbath command arrives for people who had lived for generations under quotas and forced labor. Why might rest be such an important part of God’s work of freeing them, not just physically but inwardly? [21:20]
- Scripture invites God’s people to ask, and to ask boldly, while still refusing to treat God like a genie. What does that balance look like in real life? [27:22]
Application questions- When life feels tight or uncertain, what does grumbling usually sound like in the heart? What kinds of fears tend to sit underneath the complaints? [12:06]
- God’s provision often has to be recognized and named. Where has provision shown up recently in a form that might have been easy to miss or dismiss? [16:28]
- Israel had physically left Egypt, but Egypt was still shaping how they thought and reacted. What old patterns still shape the way rest, work, money, or security are handled now? [21:20]
- Overworking can become a break in trust because it quietly assumes everything depends on human effort. Where is it hardest to stop, slow down, or rest right now? [23:32]
- Some prayers stay small because asking feels weak, disappointing, or risky. What is one area of life where bigger asking before God feels uncomfortable, and why? [27:22]
- Ephesians 3:20 says God is able to do more than people ask or imagine. What is one specific need, burden, or hope that could be brought before God more boldly this week? [27:56]
- God told Israel to keep a physical reminder because people forget quickly. What practical reminder could help remember God’s faithfulness—something written down, shared with others, or built into weekly habits? [32:27]
