Exodus 40:34–38“Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.”
[07:31]“And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.”
[07:47]“Throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out.”
[08:00]“But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out till the day that it was taken up.”
[08:00]“For the cloud of the LORD was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.”
[08:18]Exodus 6:7“I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.”
[08:59]Genesis 1:31–2:3“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.”

- In Exodus 40:34–38, what fills the tabernacle, and how does the cloud affect Moses’ ability to enter it?
- What did Israel do when the cloud lifted, and what did they do when the cloud remained over the tabernacle? [08:00]
- In Exodus 6:7, what actions does God promise to take before Israel is told that they will know him?
- What repeated pattern is seen in Genesis 1–2, and how does Exodus 40 echo the language of God finishing his work? [27:38]
Interpretation questions
- Exodus 6:7 begins with God’s promises: “I will take you,” “I will be your God,” and “I have brought you out.” What does this order show about the difference between God’s initiative and Israel’s response? [18:09]
- Israel’s freedom from Egypt was meant to lead into shalom—right relationship with God, one another, and creation. Why is leaving an oppressive situation not, by itself, the full goal of God’s rescue? [09:53]
- Genesis presents creation as very good, completed, and blessed by God’s rest. How does seeing the world as God’s dwelling place help explain why the tabernacle mattered so much in Exodus? [24:45]
- Jesus invites weary and burdened people to come to him for rest. How does that invitation challenge the idea that people must first become spiritually impressive, productive, or put together before they can draw near to God? [34:08]
Application questions
- Israel watched the cloud to know when to move and when to stay. Where might there be pressure in life to rush ahead, and what could it look like to slow down and pay attention to God’s presence and direction? [08:00]
- God brought Israel out of slavery so they could know him and live in restored relationship. What “Egypt” patterns—fear, self-protection, unhealthy habits, false sources of security, or old ways of thinking—still have a grip on life?
- God initiates, and people participate in response. In what area of faith has participation started to feel like performing in order to make God pleased or near? What would change if God’s nearness were received as a gift rather than earned? [20:21]
- Jesus says to bring him weariness and heavy burdens. What specific burden has been carried alone lately—anxiety, failure, grief, doubt, pressure, or responsibility—and what might it look like to honestly bring that to Christ? [35:29]
- Moses grew from a reluctant and anxious leader into someone who responded faithfully to God’s commands. Where is there reluctance to take a faithful next step, and what encouragement can be taken from Moses’ gradual growth? [28:38]
- The cross closes the distance between God and broken people. When does it feel as though God is far away, and what practices could help grow in awareness that God is present even in that season? [36:55]
