#FlourishWithBoundaries
“``Limits, boundaries say this place, this value, this idea, this person is holy and important. The laws and limits of God are not there to kill our good vibes or steal our freedom. They're there to help us see what really matters. My translation, my paraphrase of of Exodus twenty twenty is, don't be afraid. God is not messing with you. God wants you to know what really matters so that you can flourish in right relationship with him.”

#AccountabilityForFlourishing
“We need, as human beings, we need limits and boundaries and people in our lives to hold us to a standard, not because we're terrible, horrible, no good, very bad people who can't do anything right, but because challenge and accountability, because limits remind us, this is important. This is what you were made for. You weren't made just to do this, just to barely make it by. You were made for this. You were you were created to flourish. We need this in our lives in order to experience the fullness of life that God has promised us.”

#BoundariesEnableFreedom
“Multiple times in the in the text today, God says, put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy. Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy. Limits not only lead to freedom, but they also help us understand what matters. And I think this is the other part of the conversation that gets lost when we start talking about limits and boundaries and accountability. Limits help us understand what matters. Part of the reason challenge is so important, part of the reason that Moses flourished after being challenged by Jethro, Part of the reason why Casey has flourished after being challenged by Matt is because we desperately need accountability. We need other people in our lives who will remind us this is what matters.”

#FreedomNeedsLimits
“I wanted to close our time, spend a little bit of time this morning honing in on that third tension, the the freedom versus limits tension. Because there's so much, sort of cultural wisdom that floats around out there today that says human flourishing results by overcoming limits. Right? Get get rid of anything that that wants to impose on your life, any barriers, any boundaries. We need to get rid of all that. We don't need Matt Chapman to tell us what to do. We don't need religion holding us back. We need the freedom to to be ourselves and do what is in our hearts and transcend boundaries, and there are even baptized versions of this. There's a church in our county called Limitless. And yet, there is no true freedom without limits.”

#BoundlessFreedomIsNotFreedom
“And yet, there is no true freedom without limits. This is one of the great tensions of being a human being. We were not created to be limitless. We cannot handle it. You were not made to be able to handle boundless freedom. This is one of the reasons why I think we struggle with anxieties because we have so many options, so few limits.”

#GettingEgyptOutOfUs
“Now remember, and this is very important, the story of Exodus is not just a story about getting Israel out of Egypt. It's not just about, hey, look, you were in slavery and now you're free. Very important. People should not be enslaved. We've talked about this a lot, right, over the course of our journey through Exodus. But there's more to it than that. It's not just about getting them out of Egypt. They're now entering into a process where they are getting the Egypt out of them.”

#SlavesToSonsAndDaughters
“And all of those things that they had internalized over generations, four hundred years living in Egypt, some of these new rules and instructions, this covenant that God is making with them is about getting that that out of them so that they can now be no longer slaves, but sons and daughters of Yahweh. This is the beginning of their transformation from slaves to sons and daughters of Yahweh.”

#HoldTensionInFaith
“What do we do with these tensions? Well, to begin with, just as a general principle, a healthy faith and trust in God is able to hold some tensions. Right? A healthy faith and trust in God doesn't rush to resolve all of this, doesn't rush to maybe pick, oh, it's this and not that, doesn't rush to try to explain it away. We have to be able to hold some of these things together, fear and confidence, positive action and negative avoidance, freedom within limits.”
