Grumbling at God (Exodus 15:22-17:7)

Paul reads Israel’s wilderness record as more than old history. Paul says these things happened as examples, written for instruction, so that the Christian learns from failure how to please God. Israel came through the Red Sea, sang praise, and then walked straight into the wilderness of Shur, where three days passed and no water appeared. Marah looked like provision at first, but the water was bitter, and the people grumbled at Moses.

God answered Marah with the most ridiculous-looking solution in the world. God showed Moses a tree, Moses threw it into the water, and the bitter water became sweet. God was teaching Israel that human solutions were not going to run the wilderness. Divine solutions would train dependence on His way. Then God graciously brought Israel to Elim, with twelve springs and seventy date palms, an oasis after a test.

Exodus 16 brings Israel to the wilderness of Sin, where food ran out and the whole congregation grumbled again. Israel exaggerated the past and talked as if Egypt had been one long picnic beside pots of meat, forgetting the slavery, taskmasters, and beatings. God answered by providing quail in the evening and manna every morning, not once, but for forty years. God did not need Egypt’s supply chain, human planning, or natural explanation. God rained down bread and taught His people to gather only what He commanded.

Exodus 17 brings another dry place, and Israel’s complaint grows into accusation. Israel says Moses brought the whole assembly out to kill children and livestock with thirst. Moses does not defend himself with five good reasons. Moses goes to God. God tells him to strike the rock at Horeb, and water comes out for the people to drink.

Massah and Meribah expose the bottom-line question: “Is the Lord among us or not?” That question makes the difference between a grumbler and a person who trusts the sovereign power of God. The grumbler observes provision without appreciation, exaggerates personal conditions, compares the present to an always favorable past, refuses surrender to God’s authority, and distorts reality until false accusation sounds reasonable.

Christ fulfills the wilderness provision. John 6 says the manna pointed beyond itself to the true bread from heaven. Jesus Christ is the bread of life, and constant dependence on Him sustains the wilderness journey. Thankfulness begins by remembering what God has done and then practicing gratitude where it is hardest, not at the Red Sea or the oasis, but in the dry places where the soul wants to complain.

Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. Exodus 17:1-7
All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
