#ChallengeNotMean
“``Challenging each other may not feel nice, but it is certainly not mean. In fact, a lack of challenge can lead to all kinds of problems, team dysfunction, resentment, burnout, and sometimes permitting bad and even abusive behavior. On the other hand, because Jethro is willing to challenge Moses and Moses is willing to hear it, Israel is given this sustainable structure for governance. Right? Men of good character are equipped to lead, authority gets shared, people are protected from burnout, and Israel's needs are are met because everyone goes home satisfied.”

#ShareTheLoad
“On the other hand, because Jethro is willing to challenge Moses and Moses is willing to hear it, Israel is given this sustainable structure for governance. Right? Men of good character are equipped to lead, authority gets shared, people are protected from burnout, and Israel's needs are are met because everyone goes home satisfied. And then it almost mirrors the previous story when Jethro says, this will make your load lighter because they will share it with you. You will be able to stand the strain and all these people will go home satisfied. Moses doesn't have to hold up the community alone either. And then when others help carry it, Israel flourishes.”

#CommunionCommunity
“So ultimately, we grab and take the elements separately because of some logistical limitations that we have here. But don't get it twisted. Communion is the table of God's family. Communion gives us the foundation for a challenge because we take it together to become part of the body of Christ. When you take the elements today, consider whether you view yourself as part of God's family, as part of a community on mission with God. And some reflection questions for us, during communion, what is keeping you from giving and receiving challenge? And what would be different if we fought for our culture and mission together?”

#BeAJethro
“And since I'm asking us to be Jethros, it is worth kind of zooming back out over the story to consider what it what makes a Jethro. So first, we see he invest relationally in Moses to help Moses on his journey. He celebrates Moses' victories. He pays attention to Moses' life and ask good questions. He tells Moses what you were doing is not good and invites him into a better way of being. To be a Jethro is to be present, loving, and honest.”

#FightForFlourishing
“But friends, what if we were so fiercely protective of our community and mission that we said what needed to be said? And I'm not talking about some legalistic toxic culture of like nitpicking and judging each other. I'm talking about understanding ourselves as deeply interconnected, seeing how we share in one another's failures, victories, weaknesses, and strengths, and fighting for our flourishing.”

#CourageousCorrection
“So my challenge this morning is to embrace challenge. When someone in your NC who you've shared meals with is struggling with our core values, will you ask them about it? Ask them to clarify what's going on there. When your friend is exhausted and overcommitted to too many good things, will you tell them, hey, what you're doing is not good? When the teammate that you can laugh with and crack jokes with often fails to follow through or show up, will you take them aside and let them know how that impacts others? In other words, will you be a Jethro?”

#TruthWithLove
“I love the tone of that. What you're doing is not good. It's not what you're doing is stupid. It's not what you're doing is sinful. Right? What you're doing is not good. The way you are living is not going to lead to flourishing or shalom. And he says this arrangement is not good for anyone in the long term. Right? Not Moses or the people. And he is talking to the guy with God's staff, the guy who faced down pharaoh, the guy who led Israel through the Red Sea. He tells him, you're on your way to crashing and burning, dude, and you're gonna take these people out with you.”

#TrustedChallengers
“This community is full of Moses's and Aaron's and hers. But who are our Jethros? Who will say, what you're do doing is not good, and we can't help but trust them because they love so well? Challenging each other may not feel nice, but it is certainly not mean. In fact, a lack of challenge can lead to all kinds of problems, team dysfunction, resentment, burnout, and sometimes permitting bad and even abusive behavior.”
