Bible Reading
2 Peter 1:3-11His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
[56:12]by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
[56:38]For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge,
[57:03]and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,
[57:56]and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.
[59:19]For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[01:00:39]For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.
[01:00:48]Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.
[01:02:57]For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
[01:03:25]Ephesians 4:13-15until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
[01:05:50]so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
[01:23:22]Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,
[01:23:36]2 Corinthians 3:18And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
[01:08:23]Romans 8:29For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
[01:10:32]Observation questions
- In 2 Peter 1:3-11, what has Christ’s divine power already provided, and what qualities are believers then told to pursue intentionally? [56:12]
- What does Peter say will happen when the qualities of faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love are present and increasing?
- According to Ephesians 4:13-15, what is the stated measure or goal of spiritual maturity, and what are mature believers less vulnerable to? [01:05:50]
- What words in 2 Corinthians 3:18 and Romans 8:29 show that becoming like Christ is both a present process and God’s promised purpose for His people? [01:08:39]
Interpretation questions
- Peter says that God gives everything needed for life and godliness, yet also commands believers to “make every effort.” How do these two truths protect a person from both passivity and trying to change by sheer willpower? [57:03]
- Why might Peter describe growth not merely as possessing godly qualities, but as having them “increasing”? What does that say about the difference between perfection and a life moving in the direction of Christ? [01:00:34]
- Ephesians says that maturity is measured by “the fullness of Christ.” How would this change the way a person evaluates spiritual growth compared with measuring by Bible knowledge, church activity, or comparison with other people? [01:24:03]
- Romans 8:29 says that God’s purpose is to conform His children to the image of His Son. How can this promise give hope to someone who sees mainly past failures and present struggles? [01:14:19]
Application questions
- Which of the five P’s—pleasure, possessions, popularity, prestige, or power—is most likely to pull your attention away from becoming who Christ created you to be? What is one situation this week where you could choose Christ’s purpose instead? [49:15]
- Look again at the qualities in 2 Peter 1. Which one seems most needed in your life right now: goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, or love? What specific “every effort” could you make to pursue it this week? [57:15]
- God often uses relationships, work, obedience, failure, trials, and suffering to reshape character. What current relationship, responsibility, disappointment, or hardship might be a place where God is inviting you to grow in Christlikeness? [50:40]
- Think about a recent moment when you were offended, criticized, fearful, reactive, unwilling to forgive, or determined to get the last word. What might that reaction reveal about an area where Christ wants to form His character in you? [01:19:39]
- When you recognize that you have missed a turn spiritually, do you tend toward excuses, shame, or self-condemnation? What would it look like to receive God’s correction as a loving invitation to “recalculate” and take one next step of obedience? [01:22:08]
- Is there a truth from Scripture that you have known for a long time but have not consistently put into practice? What would applying that truth look like in a concrete conversation, decision, habit, or relationship this week? [01:23:55]
- Where have you seen even a small but real increase in Christlike character over the past year? How can remembering that progress encourage you to keep pursuing Christlikeness without pretending that you have already arrived? [01:27:36]
