Keeping an Eternal Perspective

Philippians 1:18-26 calls believers to rejoice, not because every week feels good, but because rejoicing is a response to God’s grace. Paul rejoices while chained to a guard, while others drag his name through the mud, because Christ is proclaimed. Christ, not a church name, a ministry, or even the benefits of faith, is the great gift offered to sinners. Eternal life is knowing God through the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is the prize.

Paul’s hope rests in the prayers of the Philippians and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Prayer exposes human weakness, pride, and the false belief that people can handle life on their own. The Holy Spirit helps believers precisely where they are weak, and prayer brings them humbly before God for that help. Spiritual warfare makes this dependence urgent. Jesus responded to Satan’s demand to sift Peter and the disciples by praying for their faith not to fail, and churches remain strong when they pray together and stay focused on Christ’s mission.

The Holy Spirit is not given in tiny measured portions. God gives the Spirit without measure, filling, strengthening, sustaining, and sanctifying those who ask in faith. Believers need that continual filling because they leak. Yesterday’s filling does not carry today’s burden. God does not hold back from His children, but faith must believe that Christ gives this gift, and humility must admit the need.

Paul’s confidence in deliverance reaches beyond his coming court case. Job’s words point toward God’s perfect court, where those who trust Christ will finally be delivered. Christ has dealt with guilt and shame at the cross. The tree of the cross bears the curse deserved for sin, and the public disgrace of crucifixion bears the shame that tells a person, “I am a failure.” Jesus endured that shame for the joy set before Him, so those in Him receive a new identity as beloved sons and daughters of the living God.

Paul wants Christ magnified in his body, whether by life or death. A microscope does not make an object larger, but makes it visible. Christ lives through believers in their homes, work, neighborhoods, hardships, loving kindness, grace, and mercy. “To live is Christ” means surrender, submission, and fruitful labor. “To die is gain” means being with Christ forever. Paul remains willing to serve because God still has fruitful work for him, especially helping others grow in the progress and joy of faith. Christ alone is worthy of boasting, because His finished work cleanses sinners, forgives them, and causes them to be born again.
