The Apostle gives a very solemn warning to these Ephesians and through them to all other Christians to bear in mind always that they are confronted by the wiles of the devil. The story of the Christian is not just that he believes and is converted and saved and never has another problem. [00:01:16]

The devil knowing this presses them along that very point. What he does of course he doesn't do it openly but what he does is this: he knows that they're conscientious, he knows that they're sensitive people, highly strung people, people who are never content to do a thing anyhow. [00:04:04]

The Bible's got a great deal to say about this. There is a great deal of warning in the Bible against what it calls the cares of this world. Clearly, it's something that has always afflicted God's people, this type in particular, the cares of this world. [00:04:49]

The whole secret of victory is to realize that it is the devil and not the circumstances. We must realize that it is he who is trying to get us into this paralyzed spiritual condition. We start with that realization and then the next step is of course to reprimand ourselves. [00:10:24]

The Christian of all people should always have a sense of proportion, but it doesn't come to us automatically. We have to do it quite deliberately. Now that's because we fail to do that the devil gets his opportunity. But the Christian is one who should always be reconsidering his or her whole position in life. [00:12:16]

Mary has chosen that good part. One thing is needful. Put that at the beginning, put that in the center, make certain that that always has your priority. Then if you've got that in the right place, let everything else fall into its right respective position. That's a sense of proportion. [00:15:18]

Fear of the future is not only lack of faith, it's worse, it's unbelief. And let's pull it out and look at it and put the appropriate label on it and let's justitize ourselves. The whole art of defeating the wiles of the devil is to see that he's at the back of it all. [00:24:51]

Why my friend don't you believe that all things work together for good to them that love God? Well, if you do believe it, why are you frightened? You've got to believe the promises of the scripture and if you don't, you're guilty of unbelief. That's ultimately the trouble with these people. [00:26:08]

The Christian life is not like that. That makes it into something almost magical. Not only that, if it were as simple as that, there'd never be any growth in the Christian life. You can't get growth and development in a machine, but where there's life, there's growth and development. [00:34:48]

The Apostle Paul did not get automatic guidance. The Apostle Paul was sometimes in difficulty about his guidance. Let me give you an example out of Acts 16. In the 16th chapter of Acts, this is what I read in verse 6: now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia. [00:36:01]

The meaning of the prayer of faith is this: it is a prayer that is given to you by the Spirit. You don't command it, I don't. You can never make yourself certain that you're going to receive what you're going to ask for, but God through the Spirit will at times give you that consciousness. [00:44:20]

We are meant to get our guidance through the scriptures, through an enlightened spiritual mind and understanding, through an enlightened reason, through an enlightened conscience. That's how normally God guides us. Thank God he does, and he gives us certainty through these methods. [00:45:36]
