It seems to me that the ultimate cause of most failure in the Christian Life and most UN happiness in the Christian Life is the failure to understand the nature of this life we all start with some kind of romantic almost novelet conception of the Christian Life and the result is of course that sooner or later we are bound to be disappointed. The world regards this of course as quite ridiculous the idea that anybody should still believe in the devil and these spiritual forces the world regards as almost Madness it sure insult they feel to one's intelligence and understanding well we answered those objections and showed that ultimately it comes to this that if you don't believe in these spiritual powers that are set against us it is probably because you don't rarely believe in the spiritual realm at all. The devil is a superhuman personality bigger than men stronger than men greater than men and yet at the same time it's made very plain and that he is not Divine here is a very important distinction you see there was an ancient heresy which taught more or less that there were two Gods it was the sort of dualism or dualistic teaching. The world rulers of this Darkness they keep it going they're at the back of it all they're manipulating the press and all these other agencies of course they do it in the way that we shall come to consider later but the point is we're that we're emphasizing here that they are the world rulers of this darkness and and all that of course expresses itself in the kind of life that such people live. The devil is like that then you remember remember the description given and the term the designation used in the 12th chapter of the Book of Revelation we read it last Sunday morning great red dragon dragon is again a picture of Might and power a dragon with seven heads and 10 horns and seven crowns upon his head and listen and his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and did cast them to the earth. The devil has his agents that he can send here and there hither and thither principalities and powers and of course what is again emphasized about them is their great power and authority they have a governmental position and they have real Authority and Power in an executive sense you may say why does he talk about principalities and Powers why are the two words well that is is the distinction between the two. The devil is not just a force not just a power you see the same errors are committed on both sides there are many people who don't believe in the person of the Holy Spirit they talk about it but the holy spirit is a person the third person in the Blessed Holy Trinity the holy spirit is not just a power not just an influence and so many of our errors you see in the doctrine of the spirit and of sanctification and so on they arise from a fundamental failure just to realize that the spirit is personal. The devil's purpose and the Very words that are used to describe him and to designate him answer the question what's the meaning of the word devil it is traducer what is the meaning of the word Satan it is adversary and these of course are the actual terms that are used in the scripture he is called the accuser of our Brethren that's what he is that's his purpose that's his object he is also referred to as your adversary the Devil he's an adversary who is set against us an opponent a foe the leader of an army set against us. The devil and all his cohorts and his Legions they are not in heaven they are not surrounding the Throne of God no no so he they hesitated about saying in the heavenlies and you and I should be careful as to how we put this we mustn't think that the devil and these powers are in the immediate presence of God with all the Holy Angels and emissaries and powers and principalities and perentes no no they're not there well where are they well this has been a matter of great discussion throughout the centuries and we rarely can't arrive at a final answer.
