There is a real, ongoing spiritual war that affects every believer.
Many people acknowledge the reality of physical wars but overlook or deny the existence of spiritual warfare that is just as real and present in our daily lives. The Apostle Paul, writing to the Ephesians, makes it clear that we are engaged in a battle not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil. This unseen conflict shapes much of what we experience, and its effects are evident in confusion, brokenness, and temptation all around us. Recognizing this reality is the first step to living with spiritual awareness and readiness, rather than being caught off guard or living as if the battle does not exist. [11:24]
Ephesians 6:10-12 (ESV)
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Reflection: Where in your life do you sense a spiritual battle taking place, and how might acknowledging this unseen war change the way you approach your struggles today?
Our strength to withstand spiritual attacks comes not from ourselves, but from God’s mighty power.
We are not called to fight spiritual battles in our own strength, wisdom, or willpower. Instead, Scripture commands us to be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Just as physical muscles are insufficient for spiritual warfare, so too are our best efforts apart from God. The strength we need is found in Christ, who empowers us to stand firm and face every challenge with confidence. When we rely on God’s strength, we are fortified to withstand the enemy’s schemes and to live victoriously, no matter how weak we may feel in ourselves. [09:32]
Ephesians 6:10 (ESV)
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
Reflection: What is one area where you have been relying on your own strength instead of God’s? How can you intentionally draw on His power today?
God provides spiritual armor, but we must actively put it on to stand firm.
God has given us everything we need to stand against the enemy: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God. However, it is our responsibility to “dress ourselves” each day, intentionally putting on the full armor He provides. Just as a soldier would never enter battle without proper equipment, we must not walk into our daily lives spiritually unprotected. Each piece of armor is essential, and together they enable us to withstand temptation, deception, and attack. Putting on the armor is a daily act of faith, surrender, and preparation for the battles we will face. [22:20]
Ephesians 6:13-17 (ESV)
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Reflection: Which piece of God’s armor do you most often neglect, and what practical step can you take today to “dress yourself” for spiritual battle?
Prayer and God’s Word are our primary weapons for victory in spiritual warfare.
While the armor of God protects us, we are also given offensive weapons: the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and prayer. Jesus himself modeled this in the wilderness, responding to the devil’s temptations with Scripture and being led by the Spirit in prayer. Victory in spiritual battles depends entirely on the Holy Spirit, and we access His power through prayer and by storing up God’s Word in our hearts. These practices are not optional extras but essential strategies for standing firm and advancing God’s purposes in our lives and in the world. [30:42]
Luke 4:1-4 (ESV)
And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’”
Reflection: How can you make space today to pray and meditate on God’s Word as your battle plan for whatever you are facing?
Standing firm is possible when we are rooted in Christ’s love and strengthened by His Spirit.
The ultimate goal of putting on God’s armor and engaging in spiritual battle is not just to survive, but to stand firm—unmoved, unshaken, and secure in Christ. Paul’s prayer for the church is that we would be strengthened with power through the Spirit in our inner being, rooted and established in the love of Christ. When we humble ourselves before God, kneeling in prayer and dependence, He gives us the strength to stand before any challenge. Even if you feel wounded or weary, God’s love and power are available to restore you and enable you to stand again, filled with the fullness of God. [38:36]
Ephesians 3:14-19 (ESV)
For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Reflection: In what area of your life do you need to kneel before God today, asking Him to fill you with His love and strength so you can stand firm?
Today, as we celebrate Pentecost, we remember not only the birth of the Church and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, but also the ongoing reality of spiritual warfare in our lives. William Blake’s poem reminds us that unless our eyes, ears, tongues, hearts, and minds “catch fire,” we cannot truly see, hear, name, love, or know God. This is our prayer: that the Spirit would ignite us afresh, just as He did on that first Pentecost.
Turning to Ephesians 6, we see that the motif is war—not a physical war, but a spiritual one. While many of us have never experienced the devastation of physical war, we are all participants in a spiritual battle that is just as real and far more consequential. Paul’s words are urgent: “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” Our own strength is insufficient; we must draw on the strength of God Himself. The enemy is not flesh and blood, but spiritual forces of evil that operate in unseen realms, influencing the visible world in subtle and destructive ways.
It’s easy to forget or even deny the reality of this spiritual conflict, especially in a culture that minimizes or mocks the idea of the devil. Yet, the schemes of the enemy are real and relentless. He works not only to destroy us individually, but also to turn us against one another, making us believe that people are our enemies rather than the spiritual forces behind the scenes. Our true goal is not to defeat flesh and blood, but to see many saved—Christ died for people, and our battle is for their redemption.
Paul instructs us to put on the full armor of God: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. This armor is God’s provision, but we must “dress ourselves”—it is an intentional, daily act. Truth is foundational, more than facts or feelings; it is God’s perspective, embodied in Jesus Christ. Righteousness protects our hearts, and the gospel gives us peace and purpose. Faith shields us from the enemy’s attacks, and salvation renews our minds.
Prayer is not just a defensive posture but an offensive weapon, intimately connected to every piece of the armor. Jesus Himself modeled this in the wilderness, wielding the Word and praying in the Spirit. The repeated call in Ephesians is to “stand”—to remain unshaken, rooted in God’s strength, and able to withstand every assault. As we kneel before God, especially at the altar, we receive the power to stand before anything or anyone. Even if we feel wounded or defeated, God meets us in humility, restores us, and enables us to stand again, clothed in the righteousness and love of Christ.
Therefore, because of this evil world, because of the schemes of the devil, therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground. And after you have done everything, That's a lot. Thank you for listening. to stand, stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one, take the helmet of salvation, put that on, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.

A scheme of the devil is that he will use facts to trick you. But if you don't know the truth, you'll still be held in bondage. You know, these days, there's a lot of fact checkers, aren't there? A whole bunch of fact checkers. But there aren't enough truth tellers. That's what I'm saying today. We need more truth tellers. Lord, give us more truth tellers. Stop obsessing about what the world has to say and fall in love with what God says. God's view of a matter is always right. Every other view, wrong. All the time. That's the way it works.

God says truth is a person. Jesus Christ. He is the way. The truth. The truth. and the life. And so when you put on the belt of truth, you put on the goodness of Jesus Christ. You put on all of him. There's nothing false about him. He's only true.

Once you know what the truth is, you know what is right, and you know what is wrong. The truth will help you in that way. It's a way you measure that. You measure reality. And the opposite is this, wrongness. There's righteousness, and there's wrongness. Wrongness invites darkness. The devil loves wrong. This is one of his schemes. He loves wrong. Because if he can nudge you into wrongness, then you'll be disconnected from the truth. And he then, the devil, can control whatever the situation may be. He can control that. But if you adhere to the truth, if you surrender to Christ, the result is righteousness. And that righteousness becomes a breastplate, a breastplate to protect your heart. That's why it's the breastplate of righteousness. Is your heart protected as you stand in the war zone that you live in every day of your life?

Because here's reality. I'm a child of light. I'm no longer bound by slavery. And so we say, Oh, death, where is your sting? We say, Oh, Hades, where is your victory? Christchurch, come on. It's time to suit up. We've got to do combat. We've got armor to put on. I'm talking about men and women. I'm talking about boys and girls. I'm talking about young and old. I'm talking about every race, every class. We have an enemy who's supernatural. Absolutely. But we have armor that is supernaturally provided by God through Jesus Christ and his gospel.

If you haven't stood, that's all right. Come to the altar, because at the altar, as you kneel, you can find power through the Holy Spirit to help you, empower you to stand and to face all the fiery darts and trials and temptations of this life. And through the Spirit working in your inner being, you will have the ability, by God's grace, to stand today, to stand again.
