Sermon Summary

Sermon Clips

1. "He battled for people. People who had been through devastating fires and natural disasters. He fought against despair and hopelessness with every bar of soap and each toothbrush that he'd put in those bags. Knowing that one day it would be given to someone who needed to know that someone cared and that there was hope. Tony came dressed in his armor, not for a show of power or personal gain or self-preservation, but Tony came dressed in armor to proclaim and be the gospel of peace." 2. "The armor that we're told to wear isn't made for the Scottish highlands. It isn't made of steel or leather or wood. It isn't powered by distrust or hatred and violence. The kind of warrior described here in our text today carries no harmful weapons and has no deadly equipment. We are called to be a different kind of warrior entirely, not one who seeks to conquer or seeks victory, but one who seeks to be grounded in truth, righteousness, and salvation, empowered and encouraged to spread God's word, the word of peace and love and justice and grace." 3. "We have to acknowledge that Christians throughout history have often been the perpetrators of violence and war. We've used violence against non-Christians. We've used violence in defense of agendas, our agendas, and we claimed were God's agendas, which is actually what it means to take the Lord's name in vain. And in doing so, we're doing the very opposite of what this text tells us that we are to do. It is not by force that good will prevail. It is by the armor of faith that good will prevail. It is not by the armor of the world that God's kingdom will come. It is by love, sacrificial love, as Christ loves us, that the kingdoms come, that God's will be done." 4. "Evil forces are anything that aim to divide us, to turn us against each other. These forces don't want unity, what God calls us to. They don't want us to show love and kindness and grace and mercy. They take pleasure in human conflict, especially in the church. These forces are also within us, manifesting those inner voices that tell us we aren't good enough, smart enough, loved enough, righteous enough. Pastor Nadia Bolts-Weber describes them as demonic pop songs. They play in our mind repeatedly. We just can't get rid of them. They spread lies and they try to distance us from God." 5. "Therefore, take up the whole armor of God. Stand, therefore, and belt your waist in truth, and put on the breastplate of righteousness, and lace up your sandals in preparation for the gospel of peace. And with all of this, take the shield of faith, take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. These are the things that we wear to protect and empower us. To stand firm against anything that would divide us from God and the world." [43:45] (60 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

6. "I do believe that there are forces of evil in the world that we battle, but we're not called to feel scared we're not called to put on the armor of the world which only instills fear and wrecks havoc on the world leaving trails of suffering and death we are to put on the armor of faith that helps us by the power of the spirit to bring about peace and love reconciliation and unity and i'm here to proclaim that evil will not win in this world because god has given us jesus christ and all the tools that we need to follow him in victory it has been won even while we battle now so do not fear but instead have hope that we have been equipped with the armor of faith" [45:22] (58 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

7. "So tomorrow before you go to school or work or wherever you're going dress wisely wear the gospel of peace as tony would say i'm ready for battle put on the belt of truth the breastplate of righteousness the shield of faith and the helmet of salvation and i promise that you'll have what you need to be the disciple of god and to be one who goes out to proclaim for the glory of god and the good of the world" [46:44] (38 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
