Equipped for Battle: The Power of God's Word
Summary
In today's worship, we explored the profound truth that as followers of Christ, we are engaged in a spiritual battle. This battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil. However, we are not left defenseless. God equips us with His presence and the full armor of God, which includes the powerful sword of the Spirit—the Word of God. This Word is not just a collection of texts but is alive and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, capable of penetrating our hearts and discerning our thoughts and intentions.
The Word of God is living because it is embodied in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. When God speaks, creation happens, and His Word accomplishes His purposes. As we engage with Scripture, the Holy Spirit moves within us, transforming our hearts and minds. The Word is active, working energetically in us, cutting away what is not of God, and pruning us to bear more fruit. It discerns our thoughts and helps us align our lives with God's will.
In spiritual battles, the Word of God serves as a sword, a specific "rhema" or spoken word, that we can wield against the enemy's attacks. Just as Jesus used Scripture to counter the devil's temptations, we too can use specific verses to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. The Word of God is a powerful tool that transforms moments, offering hope and strength in times of need.
We are encouraged to immerse ourselves in Scripture, to memorize and meditate on it, so that it becomes deeply rooted in us. This way, we can recall it when needed, both for our own battles and to support others. The Word of God is a source of truth, joy, and victory, and we are called to take it up as our weapon in the spiritual warfare we face daily.

Day 1: Engaging in Spiritual Warfare with Divine Armor
As followers of Christ, we are engaged in a spiritual battle that is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil. This battle requires us to be vigilant and prepared, knowing that we are not alone. God provides us with His presence and the full armor of God, which includes the sword of the Spirit—the Word of God. This divine armor equips us to stand firm and endure even in the darkest moments, offering us protection and strength. We are called to actively put on this armor daily, recognizing that our strength comes from God and His Word. [10:00]
"For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds." (2 Corinthians 10:3-4, ESV)
Reflection: What specific piece of God's armor do you feel you need to focus on today, and how can you intentionally put it on in your daily life?
Day 2: The Living and Active Word of God
The Word of God is not just a static text but is alive and active, embodied in Jesus Christ. It accomplishes God's purposes and transforms our hearts and minds as we engage with Scripture. The Word cuts away what is not of God and helps us bear more fruit, aligning our lives with His will. As we immerse ourselves in Scripture, the Holy Spirit moves within us, bringing about transformation and growth. This living Word is a source of life and power, guiding us in our spiritual journey. [20:00]
"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12, ESV)
Reflection: How can you create a daily habit of engaging with Scripture to allow it to transform your heart and mind?
Day 3: Wielding the Sword of the Spirit in Battle
In spiritual battles, the Word of God serves as a sword, a specific "rhema" or spoken word, that we can wield against the enemy's attacks. By recalling and speaking specific verses, we can counter the devil's schemes and stand firm in our faith. Just as Jesus used Scripture to counter the devil's temptations, we too can use the Word as a powerful tool in our spiritual warfare. This requires us to be familiar with Scripture, to have it deeply rooted in our hearts, ready to be used in times of need. [36:42]
"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication." (Ephesians 6:17-18, ESV)
Reflection: What specific verse can you memorize and meditate on this week to use as a weapon in your spiritual battles?
Day 4: Immersing in Scripture for Strength and Support
Immersing ourselves in Scripture, memorizing and meditating on it, allows the Word to become deeply rooted in us. This enables us to recall it when needed, both for our own battles and to support others. The Word of God offers hope and strength in times of need, providing guidance and comfort. As we immerse ourselves in Scripture, we are better equipped to face the challenges of life and to offer support and encouragement to those around us. [45:00]
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." (Colossians 3:16, ESV)

We are called to take it up as our weapon in the spiritual warfare we face daily. By immersing ourselves in the Word, we align ourselves with God's truth and experience the victory that comes from living in His will. The Word empowers us to overcome challenges and to live a life that reflects God's glory. [50:31]
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to keep your righteous rules." (Psalm 119:105-106, ESV)

Quotes
It's always good when you're in tune If you've got your Bibles along, open up to Ephesians chapter 6 We're coming close to the end There's one more after this In our series on the armor of God Ephesians chapter 6, starting at verse 10 Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Galatians, Ephesians Chapter 6, verse 10 The apostle Paul writes Finally be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might Put on the whole armor of God That you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood But against the rulers Against the authorities Against the cosmic powers over this present darkness Against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places Therefore take up the whole armor of God That you may be able to withstand in the evil day And having done all to stand firm Stand therefore Having fastened on the belt of truth And having put on the breastplate of righteousness And as shoes for your feet Having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace In all circumstances Take up the shield of faith With which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one And take the helmet of salvation And the sword of the spirit Which is the word of God Praying at all times in the spirit With all prayer and supplications To that end Keep alert With all perseverance Making supplications for all the saints And also for me That words may be given to me And opening my mouth Boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel For which I am an ambassador in chains That I may declare it boldly As I ought to speak The word of the Lord Let's pray Father, we're grateful We're grateful for this word this morning For the ways that you provide for us The ways that you meet us The way that you promise to live and dwell in us And go before us Be present with us And clean up after us Lord, you are a good and gracious God And so now Would you pour out your spirit Would you empty me of myself Fill me to overflowing That the words of my mouth And the meditations of all our hearts Might be acceptable in your sight For you are our strength And our salvation And all God's people say Amen [00:21:41] (132 seconds)
you are already clean because of the word I've spoken to you he says remain in me as I also remain in you no branch can bear fruit by itself must remain in the vine neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me God's Word prunes off the unhealthy branches in my life any gardeners in here what happens when you do a good job of pruning you get a lot more fruit you get a lot more fruit the Word cuts through the lies and the seed and prunes off dead branches and in me then is produced the fruit of the Holy Spirit [00:31:31] (37 seconds)
and the text from Hebrews chapter 4 also tells us not only is it alive and active and and and doing its work pruning it says that the word also discerns it judges the thoughts and hearts and attitude of the heart it moves my mind and my heart into a process of discernment and assessment concerning my own thoughts and actions towards God's and towards others I see my life in light of what God is calling me to amen and I'm able to discern at times the thoughts and actions of others it helps me to discern my own realities of what I'm doing and why I'm doing in God's Word can discern what is good and right and pleasing the Word of God changes people and I think we could go around this room and here's some incredible testimonies about how your lives have been changed by simply opening up the Word of God amen [00:32:57] (61 seconds)
let's start I'm just kidding we are going to do that though during Lent and we'll hear some testimonies about how the Word of God has shaped people Ephesians chapter 5 verse 8 for once you were darkness but now you are light in the Lord walk as children of light it's this reality of being transformed by the light of the world Jesus Christ by the Word of God that is alive and active sharper than any two -oached sword helping to discern so let's look at how the living and active Word of God is a sword particularly in battle because that's what is being talked about today that we are given this sword for the reality of spiritual battles that we face how it can be an aid and a strength for us and how it can be used in the spiritual warfare that we're engaged in now the Greek word here now I'm back to Ephesians chapter 6 am I going too fast are you with me now Ephesians chapter 6 when it says in Ephesians chapter 6 [00:33:39] (62 seconds)
ephesians chapter 6 talks about this the spirit the sword of the spirit which is the word of god now what happens here is this sword of the spirit which is the word of god every play many of the other places in scripture when you hear the word of talking like in john chapter 1 the word was god the word was with god talking about jesus the greek word that's used for that word word that gets real to him are you with me here is logos logos there used to be a christian bookstore in minneapolis called logos i'd go to and get christian albums and devotionals and stuff logos the word of god word in this text ephesians chapter 6 that's not what is translated from it's not logos the word of god it's rama it's a different word in greek word translated as word rama [00:34:39] (57 seconds)
rama here's what rama means rama is a series of words joined together in a sentence a saying or any sort of message that is a tight grouping of words so what's the significance here because in the battles we face you see the spiritual battles that we find ourselves engaged in we don't swing around a bible around our heads we can't speak the whole book or sing logos this whole thing the entire canon of scripture but we can call on specific verses that apply to the realities and the struggles that we're facing in that moment do you understand what i'm saying rama [00:35:26] (46 seconds)
rama so it's a sword when we use these specific verses or phrases words to counteract the attack that is coming at us and we can we can call on specific words from scripture that deal with the exact thing that's coming at us rama the word is a sword literally rama verses of scripture in the heart and on the tongue of believers that are used to defend us from the fiery darts of the devil or even with the word stab back at the devil and push him away [00:36:00] (32 seconds)
god gives us a sword scripture to fight off the devil so rama pointed verses that apply to a given situation when you're in a battle here's here's kind of the application of this when you're under attack feeling defeated or needing a word to battle the devil's attempts to get you to doubt god's goodness or the devil's attempt that he's trying to get you to temptate temptation into a sin in particular or whatever that might be in that instance the genie the genealogy of jesus from matthew chapter one isn't that great of a help amen [00:36:40] (33 seconds)
so do not fear for i'm with you don't be dismayed i am your god i will strengthen you and help you i will uphold you with my righteous right hand all who raids against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced those who oppose you will be nothing and perish though you search for your enemies you will not find them those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all for i am the lord your god who takes hold of your right hand and says to you do not fear i will be your help how's that sound you see the word of god as a sword in battle is literally verses that beat back the darkness in that moment undermining and undermining any of the power of the devil that he's throwing at you [00:36:58] (43 seconds)
comes from luke chapter 4 and you can turn to the matthew mark luke chapter 4 and what you're going to find in luke chapter 4 is is the devil tempting jesus in the wilderness do you remember this jesus is sent out into the wilderness after his baptism for 40 days he's fasted and he encounters the devil out in the wilderness and the devil starts to tempt him and when you look at the scripture what you'll see is when jesus speaks it's kind of set apart with quotes around it do you see that each time the devil tempts jesus jesus responds with the word of god he's speaking texts from deuteronomy he's countering the devil with rama quoting scripture to beat back the lies god's word is a sword in battle and jesus confirms what ephesian tells us the sword of god is an enemy against the devil's schemes and plans and fiery darts [00:37:34] (60 seconds)
