The struggles we face in life often seem to be with other people, but Scripture reminds us that our true battle is not against those around us, but against spiritual forces of evil working behind the scenes. When we focus on people as our enemies, we lose sight of the deeper reality and risk allowing bitterness and division to take root in our hearts. Instead, we are called to recognize the spiritual nature of our struggles, keeping our eyes on God and remembering that Satan seeks to disrupt our relationship with both God and others. By understanding the true nature of the battle, we can respond with love and grace, rather than anger or resentment. [05:17]
Ephesians 6:12 (ESV)
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Reflection: Who in your life do you tend to see as an “enemy”? How might recognizing the spiritual battle behind the scenes change the way you respond to them today?
Victory in spiritual battles does not come by accident or by waiting until the moment of crisis; it comes from daily preparation and intentionally putting on the armor God provides. Just as a soldier would never enter battle without their gear, we are called to “pick up and take with us” the armor of God each day—truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God. This is not a passive act, but a deliberate choice to be spiritually ready, so that when temptation or hardship comes, we are able to stand firm and resist the enemy. God has given us everything we need, but it is up to us to put it on and carry it with us into each day. [12:49]
Ephesians 6:13-17 (ESV)
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Reflection: What would it look like for you to intentionally “put on” each piece of God’s armor before you start your day tomorrow?
Truth is the foundation that holds everything together in the life of a believer. In a world where opinions constantly shift and reality is often distorted, God’s truth is unchanging and reliable. The “belt of truth” is not just about knowing facts, but about wrapping our lives in the reality of who God is and what He has revealed. When we stand on this truth, we have something solid to fight for and to stand upon, giving us purpose and direction. Without truth, the rest of the armor is useless; with it, we are anchored and ready for whatever comes our way. [17:55]
John 14:6 (ESV)
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Reflection: In what area of your life do you most need to replace shifting opinions with the unchanging truth of God today?
Faith is our shield against the attacks of the enemy—doubts, fears, temptations, and discouragements that come like flaming arrows. This shield is not just for individual protection, but also for standing together with others in the body of Christ. When we trust in God’s promises and His faithfulness, we are able to block and extinguish the lies and schemes of Satan. Even when circumstances are difficult or confusing, holding up the shield of faith means choosing to believe that God is good, powerful, and present with us in every battle. [25:56]
Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Reflection: What is one specific fear or doubt you are facing right now? How can you actively hold up the shield of faith against it today?
God has not called us to play defense only; He has given us the sword of the Spirit, which is His word, to actively advance His kingdom and push back the darkness. The word of God is alive and powerful, able to expose evil, bring transformation, and defeat the enemy’s schemes. When we know, speak, pray, and obey God’s word, we are not just surviving spiritual battles—we are taking ground for Christ in our families, schools, and communities. The sword is our offensive weapon, and we are called to use it boldly and confidently as we follow Jesus. [30:03]
Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Reflection: What is one verse or passage of Scripture you can memorize or speak today to actively resist the enemy and advance God’s work in your life?
Paul’s letter to the Ephesians reminds us that being “in Christ” is not just a statement of belief, but a reality that shapes every aspect of our lives. We are chosen, adopted, purchased, and given purpose through Jesus’ death and resurrection. This identity calls us to gratitude, to serve God’s kingdom, and to recognize that we belong to a body of believers—each with a unique role to play. But as we live out this calling, we must not forget that we are engaged in a spiritual battle, one that is often invisible but very real.
Our true enemy is not the people around us, but the spiritual forces of evil that seek to divide, distract, and destroy. Satan’s greatest tactic is to convince us that our struggles are merely with flesh and blood, causing us to misplace our focus and even turn against one another. When we see people as the enemy, we fail to love as Christ commands, and the work of God’s kingdom is hindered.
To stand firm, we must be spiritually prepared before the battle even begins. Just as a moose’s victory is determined by the strength it builds long before the fight, our spiritual victories are won in the daily habits of faithfulness, not in the heat of the moment. Paul urges us to “put on the full armor of God”—not as a last-minute scramble, but as a daily discipline. This armor includes the belt of truth, which grounds us in the reality of God; the breastplate of righteousness, which guards our hearts and actions; the shoes of peace, which give us stability and readiness; the shield of faith, which extinguishes the enemy’s attacks; the helmet of salvation, which secures our minds in our identity as God’s children; and the sword of the Spirit, God’s Word, which is our only offensive weapon.
God provides the resources, but we must choose to “pick up and put on” this armor each day. If our armor feels battered, God promises to renew and restore it. The call is not to passivity, but to active preparation and engagement—ready to stand, to defend, and to advance God’s kingdom wherever we go.
Ephesians 6:10-18 — (The Armor of God passage, which is the main text for the sermon.)
If we say if we claim that we are in Jesus Christ and he is in us then there's some outcomes from that there's some ways that our life looks and there's some things that we can claim because of that. [00:00:25]
Just as our human part our human parts our human body has many parts that work together so that we can live a healthy uh life, so does the body of Christ. Each and every one of us has a specific part to play in the kingdom of God in this local church. [00:01:17]
Evil is very real. It is very real. It is not something imaginary. See Satan wants us to think that it's imaginary because then we won't take it seriously. It is very real and it causes pain. [00:04:38]
We may find ourselves labeling that person as an enemy. We may find ourselves fighting with a neighbor or family member or disagreeing with a politician but the whole time that we're doing that, Satan is behind the the scenes causing havoc. [00:05:47]
Because if we don't understand if we don't believe that we are in a cosmic battle, a spiritual battle, then we're not going to do anything about it. We're not going to work hard to be ready to fight a spiritual battle. [00:08:33]
Spiritual battles, especially spiritual battles that we win, we began prepping for that long before the battle. Long before the battle. See Satan doesn't, you know, if you're a history buff any at all even if you just did you know eighth grade history. [00:11:17]
What Satan doesn’t fight like that. Satan doesn’t go "Okay now next January you’re going to be a low point in your life and I’m going to attack right then." Well if we knew that what would happen? We’d be ready for it right? [00:12:07]
Paul said if this is true then this should be the outcome. This is what you should do. This is what is expected. And this time it leads to the answer given because of the battle of God. Paul has just said we are in a spiritual battle. Therefore you need to do these things. [00:13:50]
Paul says this armor is not something that you wait until you're in the middle of the battle and then go looking for different pieces. This is something that you get up in the morning and you put it on and you take it with you into the day so that if you're attacked you're ready. [00:15:02]
The belt of truth is the reality of God. That God is indeed real. That God is indeed in charge, the truth of his existence, the truth of his revelation. And this gets wrapped around everything that we are so that we can become effective, that we have a purpose. [00:17:47]
Physically in a physical fight, without a beating heart you're dead. But spiritually without a protected heart we cannot survive either. The body armor that Paul says to take up to protect our heart is the righteousness of God. [00:21:14]
This righteousness, this body armor of righteousness keeps us in tune with God so that we look more like God and less like the world. [00:22:03]
And so they gave the Roman soldiers shoes so they could advance quickly without injury. And just as shoes protect and give us stability with our feet, Paul says we are looking for, we are placing upon, we are putting on the shoes of peace. [00:23:05]
This shield represents a steadfast trust, confidence in God's promises. It's that protection. And just as the physical shield protected the Roman soldiers against the incoming arrows or even swords or a blow from a hammer, the shield of faith safeguards us from doubts and fears and other attacks that Satan may throw at us. [00:25:30]
It's through unwavering faith in God's faithfulness, power and goodness that these fiery arrows, this temptation, deception, discouragement can be blocked and even extinguished. [00:26:04]
