Ephesians opens like a 30,000 foot view of a very dense book. Paul starts with God blessing his people with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, and that one verse becomes the springboard for the whole letter. God is sovereign, working all things according to the counsel of his own will. God is not partly in charge or mostly in charge. God is in control of everything, or he is in control of no thing.
Ephesians also shows God as saving, loving, and full of mercy. God chose his people in Christ before the foundation of the world, predestined them to adoption, and did it according to the good pleasure of his will. God saved because it pleased him to do so, and he did it to the praise of his glorious grace. God is worthy to make his glory known, and when his glory is made known, his people are at their most satisfied.
Paul then pops the hood on salvation. Ephesians does not only say that the wheels on the bus go round and round. It shows what makes the whole thing work. The Father purposes and plans, the Son pays for and procures salvation, and the Spirit seals, sanctifies, and saves. Every blessing is in Christ, and not one spiritual blessing can be gotten apart from him.
Chapter two gives the hard truth about natural man. Humanity is dead in trespasses and sins, walking according to the course of this world, following its own desires, and by nature children of wrath. The only thing sinners contribute to salvation is the sin that made it necessary. But God, rich in mercy because of his great love, makes dead people alive. Like Lazarus in the grave, the sinner does not help himself out. God speaks life.
Ephesians also teaches that Christ has broken down the wall between Jew and Gentile. Those who were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. Out of the two, Christ has made one new man. There are no second class citizens in Christ, no kiddie table for Gentiles, no separate salvation program for separate peoples.
Paul’s doctrine then presses toward life. Learning is for living, but the missing middle is loving. The Spirit-given knowledge of God’s power and Christ’s love leads the heart to say, “Lord, what would you have me to do?” Ephesians moves from doctrine to the church, the home, authority, work, spiritual warfare, and the whole armor of God. The same letter also warns the unbeliever plainly: apart from Christ there is no hope, no God, and no safe time to wait.
Key Takeaways
- 1. God blesses only in Christ Every spiritual blessing is located in Christ, not around him, beside him, or after him. Ephesians keeps repeating “in him” because salvation is not a pile of gifts handed out apart from the Son. The blessing is not merely that God gives things, but that God gives himself through Christ, and there is no other way to receive him. [18:23]
- 2. Grace kills every human boast Ephesians two does not leave natural man bruised, sick, or morally confused. It says dead in trespasses and sins. Grace is necessary because the sinner has neither the ability nor the desire to rescue himself, and that makes boasting look ridiculous. When God makes the dead alive, worship becomes the only honest response. [22:39]
- 3. Christ makes one new man The wall between Jew and Gentile has not been lowered a little. Christ has broken it down by his blood. Ephesians does not create a first class and second class people of God, but one body with the same access to the Father by one Spirit. The church becomes the place where old hostilities are judged by the cross and not allowed to write the final word. [25:49]
- 4. Learning must become loving obedience Knowledge by itself can give a person the big head. Ephesians prays for deeper understanding so that the heart may grasp Christ’s love and be strengthened in the inner man. True doctrine does not stop at information. It moves through love into the question Saul asked on the Damascus road: “Lord, what would you have me to do?” [35:48]
- 5. Delay is spiritually dangerous business Ephesians speaks plainly to the person outside Christ: dead in sin, under wrath, without hope, and without God. The warning is not meant to entertain fear, but to tell the truth before time runs out. No one knows how much time remains, and ordinary days can become final days without asking permission first.
