Paul turns the corner in Ephesians 4. Chapters 1 through 3 establish what Christ has done, that salvation is by grace through faith, not a works deal, and chapter 4 shows what a changed life looks like. Paul urges believers to walk in a manner worthy of the calling they have received. That worthy walk is not an attempt to earn standing before God, because Jesus already took the penalty for sin on the cross.
The picture of two scales helps show the point. Behavior should be fitting and proper for the grace Christ has already given. Paul can urge this because he has walked the walk, even as a prisoner for the Lord. The gospel changes more than what people say. The gospel changes the way people treat others when life gets hard.
Humility begins with a right view of God and a right view of self. God is King, Creator, perfect, all knowing, Alpha and Omega, while people are weak, sinful, and unable to do what is right apart from the Holy Spirit. Biblical humility is not prideful self sufficiency, and it is not self loathing either. Humility recognizes that everything a person has comes from God, then counts others more significant than self.
Gentleness puts that humble heart into action. Gentleness is not weakness or being a doormat. Gentleness is strength under control, like a powerful horse directed by small movements of the reins. Thoughts, emotions, desires, and especially the tongue need to come under the control of the Spirit.
Patience means having a long fuse. God is long suffering with sinful, rebellious people, and that patience becomes the pattern for dealing with frustrating, disappointing, and offensive people. Patience refuses to blow up over little things and makes room for people growing at a different pace. God does not give up when growth is slow, and His people cannot demand that everyone keep their preferred pace.
Bearing with one another in love means carrying what another person cannot carry. The climb up Mount Yale gives the picture: nobody left Paul behind, shamed him for being slow, or demanded that he catch up. The group slowed down, encouraged him, and took some of his load. The church maintains the unity Christ has already given by doing the same, while still confronting sin and setting proper boundaries.
Christ supplies what He commands. Jesus humbled Himself, served sinners, remained gentle, showed a long fuse, and bore burdens all the way to the cross. Christ calls His church to slow down for people because He first slowed down for them.
