Paul writes to a mixed-up, cosmopolitan Ephesus where many voices are trying to declare what is right. Paul’s letter establishes truth clearly: unity and peace are found in Jesus Christ alone. Ephesians 4 presses toward a deep longing, that God’s people would attain “the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” That fullness is not a one-time lightning strike. Sanctification is a process, a daily growing into the character of Jesus Christ.

Christ himself gives apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers to the church. Ephesians 4 says these gifts are not for show, not for titles, and not for spiritual celebrity. Christ gives them “to equip his people for works of service,” so the body of Christ may be built up. The apostolic goes where the gospel has not been preached. The prophetic brings a word from God, but every Rhema word must line up with the Logos word of Scripture. The evangelist carries a passion for the lost. The shepherd stays with the local congregation. The teacher brings spiritual insight that helps God’s people walk the journey.

Paul’s goal is maturity. The body of Christ is meant to grow until all come into unity in the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God. Nobody has arrived. Nobody is perfect but Jesus. Sanctification means turning away from evil and turning toward God, a full 180 degree turn.

Sanctification Avenue gives a picture for that journey. Sin Street names the old life, the place where every person once walked distant from God. Crossroad names the encounter with the cross of Jesus Christ. The threshold of faith brings forgiveness, redemption, justification, regeneration, and renewal. The cross changes everything and launches a believer onto Sanctification Avenue.

The Holy Spirit then leads the journey toward holiness. The baggage of discord, slander, pride, lust, addiction, unforgiveness, and bitterness does not always drop all at once. The Spirit knows when and how to bring each bag into the light. The church is not a competition to see who gets to the finish line first. The body of Christ is meant to link arms, help the fallen, and keep moving together.

Paul also warns not to give the devil a foothold. That foothold is like an occupancy permit, permission to reside. A heart filled with the fullness of Christ leaves no room for the enemy to move in. Freedom Plaza is found when Christ sets a person free, not by human strength, but by the Spirit’s patient, holy work.
