Ephesians Ch. 3 "For this reason I bow" August 9th 2026

Paul comes to Ephesians 3 with a little phrase that carries real weight: “for this reason.” Paul starts the thought, then seems to interrupt himself because the mystery of God’s grace has to be named first. That mystery is not a puzzle God refuses to solve. A biblical mystery is something nobody could ever discover unless God chose to reveal it.

God revealed that Jews and Gentiles, people separated by generations of hostility, are being made into one family through Jesus Christ. Christ does not bring Gentiles in as tolerated guests, second class believers, or outsiders standing near the edge of the promise. Christ makes them fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the same promise. The love of Christ is larger than human categories, and that love crosses lines that people often try to preserve.

Paul’s prison chains do not chain the message of Jesus. Paul does not bow because Rome has broken him. Paul bows because the love of Christ has overwhelmed him. Paul’s theology moves from explanation to adoration, from mind to heart to body. Truth becomes so heavy with the glory of God that it changes posture.

The love of Christ also requires strength to receive. Paul does not first pray for changed circumstances, even while sitting in prison. Paul prays that God would strengthen the inner being through the Spirit so Christ would dwell deeply in the heart by faith. Grace does not congratulate people for finally becoming worthy. Grace meets them with a love they could never earn, and that kind of love dismantles pride, confronts shame, and challenges fear.

The text presses beyond casual agreement with the phrase “Jesus loves you.” Paul knows that the love of Christ is too great to be reduced to a slogan on a sign or a familiar church phrase. The Spirit must help God’s people grasp the breadth, length, height, and depth of that love.

Paul reaches for measurable language only to show that Christ’s love cannot finally be measured. Its wide is wider. Its long is longer. Its high is higher. Its deep is deeper. Christ’s love is truly known, but never finished. Like a restored car known differently by the driver and by the mechanic who rebuilt every part, the love of Christ can be enjoyed and still searched more deeply. For this reason, Paul bows his knees before the Father.
