The church matters because the church belongs to Jesus. The local visible church is not just a religious gathering or a holy huddle waiting on heaven, but the bride of Christ, and Christ cares how His bride is treated. God has a special, particular, protective love for His people, so His Word gives clear instruction for how the church is to function, be cared for, and be loved.

A healthy church, at its simplest level, is marked by love and obedience. Love comes first, but not vague love for a made-up version of God. Love must be for the God of Scripture, the holy sovereign Lord who has revealed Himself in His Word and through His Son. The little g god of imagination never confronts sin, never demands repentance, and never exercises authority that crosses human desires. That god is not the God of the Bible. The God of Scripture is not customizable.

Love for God marks those who are known by God. First Corinthians 8 says that if anyone loves God, he is known by God, and that means more than God having information. It means God recognizes that person as His own. The local visible church is healthiest when its membership resembles the invisible church, when those gathered are truly born again, regenerated by the Spirit, and able to give a credible profession of faith in Christ.

Obedience is the second mark of health, but true obedience cannot be separated from love. First Corinthians 13 warns that religious activity without love is just noise, nothing, and gainless. Commands may be kept out of pride, fear of punishment, fear of man, or some attempt to give to get, but that is not worship from the heart. Jesus names the first and greatest commandment as loving the Lord with all the heart, soul, and mind because every other act of obedience must flow from that love.

The gospel says Christ became the wrath-absorbing substitute for sinners, and faith rests wholly and solely in His person and work.
