Paul sets Ephesians 2 inside the big issue of identity. Self-created identity is unstable, because the world keeps saying, find yourself, love yourself, promote yourself, express yourself. Identity in Christ is different. God gives worth, God establishes value, and God proves that value by the eternal Son leaving heaven to purchase redemption.

Ephesians 2:8-10 says salvation comes by grace through faith, not through performance, not through accomplishments, not through anything that gives the flesh room to boast. That leaves no space for superiority, racism, partiality, or hatred of groups. The saved sinner looks at the lost sinner with compassion, not disgust.

Jesus also gives direct access to the Father by the Spirit. The believer does not need penance, a priest, or animal sacrifices, because Christ opens the way to pray, “Father,” and to come boldly to a throne of grace. Paul then piles up images: citizens, household, building, holy temple. The church is built on the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone.

The whole building is being fitted together. Stones that naturally do not fit together now fit together. The Holy Spirit creates unity, not uniformity, and Jesus keeps building his church until the day he gathers his bride.

And it is amazing when we embrace this call of God. Embracing our identity in Jesus gives us abundant life, gives us purpose, gives us meaning, and gives us great joy.”
