The Supreme Blessings of the Christian Life from Ephesians 1

God the Father receives praise in Ephesians 1 because He has blessed His people with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. Ephesians 1 does not hold out those blessings as something merely future, but names them as present possessions for every blood-bought believer. The word “blessings” is not a throwaway greeting, but a doorway into the supreme blessings of the Christian life.

God has chosen His people to salvation before the foundation of the world. The text places that choice in the timeless purpose of God, where sin did not catch Him by surprise and the cross was already in His plan. The choosing of God remains beyond full human understanding, but Ephesians gives the reason clearly: that His people should be holy and without blame before Him in love.

God has adopted His people into His family. The new birth gives a new nature, nothing less than a spiritual likeness to Jesus Christ. Adoption gives the legal standing of sons and daughters, with the privileges of the family, freedom from slavish fear, the right to call God Father, and even the loving correction of His hand.

God has accepted His people in His beloved Son. The believer who looks inward will find plenty of weakness, sin, and self-doubt. Christ, however, is worthy, completely righteous, and totally accepted, so every worthiness the Christian has is found in Him. The grace of God turns forgiven sinners into object lessons, so that even the trials of the church say, “Satan must be defeated, and God must be glorified.”

God has redeemed His people through the blood of Christ. Redemption means purchase, and Christ bought sinners out of slavery at the cost of His own life. The blood of the Lamb has purchased forgiveness, not only for sins before conversion, but for present sins confessed before a faithful and just Savior.

God has made known the mystery of His will and gathered His people into His eternal plan. The fullness of time will bring all things together in Christ, from heaven and earth, from every race, tribe, and place. God has also given the best inheritance: eternal life, entrance into heaven, the new heavens and new earth, and the joy of serving Him.

God has sealed His purchased possession with the Holy Spirit of promise. The seal declares that the believer belongs to God, and the guarantee rests not on strong character or determination, but on the blood of Jesus and the Spirit’s own stamp until redemption is complete.
