Isaiah 42:8-9 begins with God establishing who He is before declaring what He will do. God says, “I am the Lord, that is my name,” and His name means He has not changed, moved, or forgotten His people. God does not give His glory to another, and He does not share the credit for what only His hand can do.
The former things have come to pass, and God calls His people to stop carrying what He has already finished. Former people, former disappointments, closed seasons, broken relationships, failed businesses, and hard diagnoses may have left a mark, but they do not get to rule the future. Isaiah’s words are not harsh when they say, “Remember ye not the former things.” God is merciful because hands gripping yesterday’s pain cannot freely receive tomorrow’s assignment.
Israel’s wilderness mentality shows how people can look back at old bondage and call it the good old days. Egypt was slavery, yet the people kept looking back because the wilderness was uncomfortable. God’s promised land required more than remembering Red Sea miracles. God’s promised land required releasing the old mindset that could not believe Him for something new. Yesterday’s baggage cannot go into today’s miracle.
New things do God declare before they spring forth. God speaks before the manifestation catches up with the declaration. Abraham received a word about Isaac long before Isaac came, and he had to carry that word while his body grew old and Sarah’s womb stayed closed. God may speak through a dream, a midnight prayer, worship, or a scripture that keeps jumping off the page. Noise can make God’s voice hard to hear, but delay does not mean God has stopped speaking.
God’s declaration also requires right positioning. Faith believes that God is who He says He is before evidence appears. Obedience responds to the small instruction, whether that means praying more, forgiving somebody, giving, or showing up. Expectation watches for what God has promised, because God can make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
God’s new thing does not have to wait until life becomes easy. God can bring it forth right in the middle of a dry season, a waiting season, or a wilderness season. God calls His people to release the former thing, receive the word before it springs forth, and turn fully from idols, false securities, and self-sufficiency. God is still declaring, “Behold, I do a new thing.”

Key Takeaways
- 1. Release what God has finished The former thing may still hurt, but God has already declared that it has come to pass. God’s mercy calls believers to stop rehearsing what He has closed. Release is not denial of the pain; release is refusing to give old pain authority over present obedience and future hope. [40:48]
- 2. Hold the word before manifestation God often gives the seed before He gives the harvest. The word may look small, especially when circumstances have not changed, but God’s declaration comes before the thing springs forth. Faith does not despise what God said simply because natural eyes cannot yet see it. [43:44]
- 3. Turn from false securities to God God will not give His glory to another, including self-sufficiency, relationships, or modern-day idols. The desire for God’s blessing must be joined to a heart fully turned toward God Himself. Right positioning means giving God the place that belongs only to Him. [45:24]
- 4. Obedience positions hearts for miracles God’s small instructions may seem disconnected from the answer being prayed for. Prayer, forgiveness, generosity, and faithful presence can become acts of alignment with the God who holds the promise. Obedience does not earn God’s power, but it places the heart where faith can receive His work. [47:43]
- 5. Expect God in the wilderness God does not need a perfect setting to do a new thing. The wilderness, dry season, and waiting season can become the very places where God makes a way and sends rivers. Expectation keeps the heart awake to recognize God’s provision when it comes.
