Jesus says a disciple is not above the teacher, and it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher. But Jesus says where two or three are gathered in his name, he is there. The worth of a congregation rests in its people and is rooted in God, not in a coffee bar, youth program, or parking lot.

Jesus’ sword becomes a hard mercy. The sword separates the voices worth hearing from the voices best ignored. Discernment cuts away fear so that God’s beloved people can become their most authentic selves. For God, this is enough.
