There Is Enough Grace for Everyone

Jesus meets the old cry of “that’s not fair” in the vineyard, where workers hired early and workers hired at the end of the day receive the same daily wage. The landowner pays the early workers exactly what was promised, yet their joy turns into grumbling when they see generosity poured out on somebody else. Their problem is not that they received too little. Their problem is that somebody else received grace.

Grace gets hard to celebrate when it is given to people who have not worked as long, suffered as visibly, or arrived as early. The landowner refuses the scarcity story that says another person’s blessing must mean less for somebody else. God’s generosity does not take dignity, welcome, freedom, or provision away from those who already have them. God keeps saying there is still enough for you and for them.

The vineyard gives a picture of a God who keeps going back. God keeps looking for the people nobody chose, the people nobody invited in, and the people still standing outside near the end of the day. God keeps calling, “You too have a place. You too matter. You too belong.” The kingdom is not a place where people fight to get ahead, but a place where the owner keeps making room.

Biblical peace is more than everybody being quiet and getting along. Peace is wholeness, right relationships, dignity, and the chance for people to flourish. Justice and peace belong together because peace cannot ignore people who are hurting, overlooked, passed over, or told they do not belong. A just peace asks who is still standing outside and how God’s people will respond when God welcomes them in.

The landowner’s justice does not merely measure what people have earned. The landowner asks what a person needs to make it through the day, feed a family, and live with dignity. Human worth is not determined by productivity, usefulness, seniority, or the amount a person can give back. Jesus keeps turning the world’s questions around: the world asks what a person has done, while Christ speaks love; the world asks what a person has earned, while Christ gives grace.

The church cannot cling to its ledger books, score sheets, and fear that there is not enough. God’s love sends the church back into the vineyard again and again, not simply to fill pews, but to find the lonely, the hurt, the forgotten, and those convinced they are too far gone. Grace gives both the longtime believer and the late arrival a place at the table. God’s extravagant love calls the church to rejoice when grace finds somebody else.
