Engaging the Mind: The Path to Knowing God

Summary

In the first chapter of Peter's epistle, we are reminded of the profound need to "gird up the loins of our mind" and engage with the Christian faith with all our faculties. Christianity is not a mere emotional experience but a call to deep understanding and reflection. We are urged to consider the gospel message, which delivers us from a life of ignorance and vain pursuits, and to recognize the precariousness of our existence in this world. Life is transient, and we are but pilgrims and strangers here, with a great event awaiting us at the end of history—the return of Jesus Christ, who will judge the world in righteousness.

The gospel confronts us with our greatest need: the knowledge of God. This need surpasses all others, as all our troubles and conflicts stem from our estrangement from God. Wars, sorrows, and personal struggles are rooted in our failure to acknowledge and submit to God. Despite humanity's attempts to solve its problems through philosophy, politics, and personal endeavors, true peace and fulfillment remain elusive without God. The Bible asserts that we are in God's hands, and only by reconciling with Him can we find true happiness and peace.

God has revealed Himself through Jesus Christ, who is the express image of God and the only way to truly know Him. Jesus' life, death, and resurrection provide the means for our reconciliation with God. Through Christ, we are offered forgiveness and the opportunity to become children of God, with God as our Father. This relationship transforms our lives, providing comfort, guidance, and strength in times of need. It is through the blood of Jesus that we gain access to God's presence, where we can find mercy and grace to help us in our time of need.

Day 1: Engage Your Mind in Faith
The Christian faith calls for the active engagement of our minds, urging us to reflect deeply on the gospel message. This is not merely an emotional journey but a profound intellectual pursuit that delivers us from ignorance and prepares us for the judgment to come. By girding up the loins of our minds, we are equipped to navigate the transient nature of life as pilgrims and strangers in this world. The return of Jesus Christ, who will judge the world in righteousness, is the great event that awaits us at the end of history. [01:24]

1 Peter 1:13-14 (ESV): "Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance."

Reflection: What specific steps can you take this week to engage your mind more deeply with the truths of the gospel, beyond just emotional experiences?

Day 2: The Knowledge of God as Our Greatest Need
Our greatest need is the knowledge of God, as all our troubles and conflicts stem from our estrangement from Him. Despite humanity's attempts to solve its problems through various means, true peace and fulfillment remain elusive without reconciliation with God. The Bible asserts that we are in God's hands, and only by acknowledging and submitting to Him can we find true happiness and peace. [11:59]

Jeremiah 9:23-24 (ESV): "Thus says the Lord: 'Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.'"

Reflection: In what areas of your life are you seeking fulfillment apart from God, and how can you begin to seek His knowledge and presence instead?

Day 3: Jesus Christ as the Revelation of God
God has revealed Himself through Jesus Christ, who is the express image of God and the only way to truly know Him. Jesus' life, death, and resurrection provide the means for our reconciliation with God, offering us forgiveness and the opportunity to become children of God. This relationship transforms our lives, providing comfort, guidance, and strength in times of need. [27:42]

Colossians 1:15-20 (ESV): "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

Reflection: How does understanding Jesus as the express image of God change the way you view your relationship with Him and your daily walk of faith?

Day 4: Access to God's Presence Through Christ
Through Christ, we gain access to God's presence, where we can find mercy and grace to help us in our time of need. This relationship with God transforms our lives, providing comfort, guidance, and strength. In times of need, we can call upon God as our Father, who knows us, loves us, and cares for us. [45:00]

Hebrews 4:16 (ESV): "Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need."

Reflection: What is one specific area of your life where you need to draw near to God's throne of grace today, and how can you practically do that?

Day 5: Assurance in Life and Death
In times of need, we can call upon God as our Father, who knows us, loves us, and cares for us. This relationship offers us peace and assurance, both in life and in death, as we are received into His eternal glory. The assurance of being God's children provides us with a profound sense of peace and security, knowing that we are held in His loving hands. [49:09]

Romans 8:16-17 (ESV): "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him."

Reflection: How does the assurance of being a child of God impact your perspective on life's challenges and the uncertainties of the future?

Quotes

Christianity isn't sub stuff it isn't a mere Riot of emotionalism it is something that calls for the exercise of all our faculties at their best and at their highest guard up the loins of your mind one needs understanding to be a Christian well then he goes on to give us various reasons why he thus calls upon us to guard up the lines of our mind. [00:01:11]

He has described that as a life which is a life of ignorance a life in which we fashion our conduct according to lusts that's the kind of life he says that men and women live by Nature it's a vain conversation an empty life a bubble kind of life looks very marvelous and wonderful and attractive as a bubble does but there's nothing in it it's full of air and it explodes and we're left with nothing. [00:02:01]

We are all but pilgrims and strangers in this world here today gone tomorrow we've been looking back we've been remembering loved ones and dear ones they're no longer here we soon be gun pass the time of you're are sing here in fear why well because you see the teaching of this book is that there is to be a great event at the end of history history is not an endless process it's coming to an end God started it God will end it. [00:03:10]

The gospel holds us face to face with what is in the last analysis of our greatest need of all now nobody would be foolish enough to dispute that we're all in need that the whole world is in need if we don't realize that on a night like this we'll never realize it Remembrance Day remembering what well especially two world wars but why does the world have wars why is there sorrow why is there trouble why is there threat of yet more war what's the matter. [00:05:25]

What is the world's real need what is our individual real urgent need this evening that's the question now then the answer of the Gospel is that it alone can tell us that and that's another reason for ging up the lines of our mind and considering what it has to say the gospel brings us face to face with our greatest our most desperate need. [00:06:30]

The Supreme need for instance for this reason that all our other needs and problems and troubles stem from this one take this question of War why are there Wars why do men fight one another and there's only one answer to the question it is because they're all out of the right relationship to God God made a perfect world and when he put men into it everything was perfect there was no Strife there was no conflict there never would have been a war war was never intended in God's creation. [00:10:37]

The Ingenuity and the ability of men has been implied throughout the centuries in trying to solve this problem of men in this world men living in this life men trying to get rid of the things that get him down and defeat him the whole story of civilization has in a sense been the search for happiness the search for peace the search for a life which is life indeed and every Power that men possesses has gone into the task. [00:12:18]

The fact is that we are all in God's hands and we can't shake him off and indeed the Bible has much evidence to teach us this that it is because we are at one at the same time in God's hands and yet antagonistic to him that we are experiencing so much of what we are experiencing God has made us for himself he meant us to live in a in a given way and he has decreed that we shall not be happy until we are in the right relationship. [00:13:38]

God has been pleased to reveal and to manifest himself he's done it in many ways he did it you see through speaking to the fathers he made the nation of the Jews be clear about that the great message of the Jews as a nation is that there is God he made them for himself the whole story is a revelation of God he gave the Ten Commandments he gave the moral law it's God revealing himself that's what it all is about the prophets the psalmist reveal healing God. [00:24:30]

The Revelation that God has given to us about himself is this that he is a God who hates sin he hates evil he hates drunkenness he hates immorality he hates selfishness he hates Injustice he hates Vice he hates the thing in which people gloat and of which they boast he hates the things that are put on the front pages of the newspaper as if they were wonderful and as if that were God hates it he's told us that everything that is impure and unclean he abominates it God is light and in him is no Darkness at all. [00:29:36]

There is only one way I say to the father I need to be reconciled to him I need to be forgiven by him I need my old enmity against him to be removed I need his abh harence of what I am by nature to be taken away how can it be done there's only one way it's all in this section for as much as you know that you were not redeemed with corruptible things such as silver and gold from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers well how then well with the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. [00:31:36]

If you call on the Father Peter this is prayer you know not addressing whatever Gods May be not frantically rushing not knowing what you're saying but uttering words without thought no no realizing that you're going to one who is your father who knows all about you who's watching over you caring for you as a human parent looks after that little helpless child watching it lest it fall getting there before it making provision anticipating god father if only men and women came to this knowledge oh how world would be transformed.
