One of the enemy’s oldest and most effective strategies is to twist and relabel what is good as evil and what is evil as good. This deception is not just a cultural phenomenon but a spiritual one, showing up throughout history and in every society. It manifests in the way life is devalued, sexuality is distorted, and material gain is idolized, leading to pain, confusion, and brokenness. Recognizing this pattern is the first step to resisting it, so that you do not become numb to the lies that surround you every day. [33:47]
Isaiah 5:20 (ESV):
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,
who put darkness for light and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Reflection: Where in your daily life do you see the world relabeling good as evil or evil as good, and how might you intentionally resist accepting those labels as truth today?
God calls us not to simply accept the patterns and customs of the world, but to allow Him to transform us by changing the way we think. This means honestly evaluating ourselves—not by comparing to others, but by measuring ourselves against God’s truth. As you encounter ideas, philosophies, and worldviews, test them carefully, seeking godly wisdom and discernment so that you are not swept up in deception but instead grow in understanding and freedom. [47:12]
Romans 12:2-3 (ESV):
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Reflection: What is one belief or habit you’ve accepted from culture that you need to honestly evaluate against God’s truth today?
For those who do not yet follow Jesus, the Bible describes a spiritual blindness—a darkness that makes it impossible to see the truth and leaves us vulnerable to deception. In that darkness, we often accept anything that promises love, acceptance, or fulfillment, only to be wounded further. But God’s desire is to open the eyes of your heart, to bring real light and hope, so you can see the truth and walk in freedom. [56:42]
2 Corinthians 4:4 (ESV):
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Reflection: If you sense spiritual blindness or confusion in your life, will you ask God today to open your eyes to His truth and show you where you’ve been deceived?
When you trust in Jesus, you are no longer defined by your past, your shame, or the lies you once believed. You are cleansed, made holy, and made right with God—a new creation with a new identity. Yet, even as followers of Jesus, the enemy tries to deceive us into holding onto guilt and shame, making us doubt God’s love and resist His freedom. Remember, your hope is in Christ, who has already made you new and invites you to walk in that reality every day. [01:05:27]
1 Corinthians 6:11 (ESV):
And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Reflection: What is one lie about your identity or worth that you need to surrender to Jesus today so you can walk in the freedom He has given you?
The enemy’s lies seek to keep you trapped in shame, fear, and self-rejection, but God’s love is relentless and true. He pursues you, dispels the darkness, and calls you to be defined not by your wounds or failures, but by His love and truth. As you walk in the light, let God’s voice be louder than the enemy’s, and trust that there is no shadow He won’t light up or wall He won’t break down to reach you. [01:12:37]
Ephesians 1:18 (ESV):
Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you need to let God’s love and truth define you instead of the lies or labels you’ve carried?
This weekend, we gathered to reflect on the reality of spiritual deception and the schemes of the evil one, who is described in Scripture as a liar, a deceiver, and the murderer of souls. The enemy’s primary tactic is to twist, distort, and relabel what is good as evil and what is evil as good. This deception is not just a cultural phenomenon but a timeless, universal spiritual battle that has played out in every society throughout history. We see it in the way life is devalued, in the distortion of sex and sexuality, and in the relentless pursuit of money as a source of satisfaction. These patterns are not new; they are the enemy’s playbook, designed to wound, divide, and destroy.
Living in a world saturated with these lies, it’s easy to become numb and accept them as truth. The pain and brokenness many of us experience—abandonment, abuse, betrayal—are often the result of someone else believing these deceptions. The enemy’s schemes are not just “out there” in the culture; they take root in our own hearts and lives, shaping our beliefs and actions unless the truth of Christ intervenes.
Scripture calls us to resist these patterns by renewing our minds and honestly evaluating ourselves—not by comparing to others, but by measuring against God’s truth. We are urged to test every idea, philosophy, and worldview, discerning what is from God and what is a lie. This requires godly wisdom, a deep knowledge of God’s Word, and spiritual discernment. Only then can we see through the noise and recognize the enemy’s tactics for what they are.
But there is hope. For those who do not yet follow Jesus, the Bible describes a spiritual blindness that only Christ can heal. When Jesus brings light into our darkness, we are able to see the truth, recognize deception, and find a path to freedom and forgiveness. For those who already follow Christ, the hope is that we are no longer defined by our past or by the enemy’s accusations. We are cleansed, made holy, and given a new identity in Christ. Yet, even as believers, we can allow old lies to define us, holding onto shame and guilt instead of embracing the fullness of God’s love and grace.
The call is clear: do not be deceived by the one who hates you. Instead, be defined by the One who loves you, who gave everything to bring you into the light, freedom, and hope that only He can provide.
One of the great deceptions of the evil one that would show up in our lives and show up in the world around us is this whole idea that he's going to look and convince people, systems, nations, individual that what is what is evil is actually the good thing and what is good or godly or Christlike is actually the evil thing. What is dark is actually the enlightened thing and what is light is the backwards old-fashioned dark thing. [00:34:00]
So, these lies and deceptions of the devil, like I said, they're timeless and they're universal. You'll see it all throughout history. Uh you'll see it all throughout uh our culture. You'll see it all throughout cultures all over the world. There's nothing new about it because it's a spiritual issue. It's not simply a cultural issue. [00:37:09]
Every culture that is far from God, every one of them, you can mark it, you can research it, you can you can look at it and prove it to yourself. Every culture that is far from God, for instance, will always despise children. Always. They will always find them inconvenient. They will always find them mealsome. They will use them as commodities. [00:37:30]
All throughout history and every culture throughout time that is godless. That is far from God that there is a distortion of God's design for sex and sexuality. You will always find that all around you all throughout history that sex is no longer a loving act between a male and a female, husband and wife, but now it's a perverted act of worship. [00:38:44]
And you just go throughout history and you'll see that pursuit again and again. And you will see that collapse again and again. And it's universal and it's timeless. Well, why? Because it's spiritual. And these are just three examples. I'm just trying to help us get our head around it. But there's a deception. Why would people time and time and time again believe that? [00:39:51]
When you live in the middle of all of these lies, you can easily become numb to those lies and you can accept those lies as truth. You can be deceived into believing that what is good is evil and what is evil is good. And as people receive that, it goes from like what's wrong with the culture and what's wrong with the government and it starts winding up showing up in our everyday lives and it wounds us and if we believe the lies it causes us to wound others. [00:41:05]
If you have been abused or abandoned or neglected, the reason that you were abused, abandoned or neglected is because somebody in your life was deceived. And they were deceived into believing that your life is cheap. It's not worth the sacrifice of their life. It's not worth being tied down. It's not worth being a responsible father or mother. You're just a kid. You'll get over it. You'll outgrow it. [00:41:33]
If you've ever been used sexually, it's because somebody had a distorted view of sex and sexuality and they used you. They used you for your body. They used you for their sexual gratification. Then they never talked to you again. They used you and abused you. Someone distorted or believed the distortion of God's design of sex and sexuality. [00:42:41]
So, these big schemes, and by the way, there's nothing new about the story. Read the Old Testament, read history. It plays itself out again and again and again. But it's what's happening around us and it's the culture that we live in. And it is a scheme of the evil one because the three things I mentioned are some of the most painful things that can happen in our lives. [00:44:14]
And one of the things that it does is it causes us then to recognize places in our lives where we believe these things and where we have been deceived ourselves. So on a big level, that's what's happening. And it will start to define us unless Jesus intervenes and the truth of his word and the truth of who he is intervenes into our life. [00:46:28]
Don't copy the behavior and the customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way that you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. So the Apostle Paul is coming in. And he's saying, "Listen, you got to recognize this stuff. [00:47:05]
God is teaching us that we have to evaluate ourselves and we have to test every idea, every philosophy, every worldview that comes our way. So in other words, he's saying, listen, knowing that there are patterns that are used by the devil to deceive you, like now we know that, and knowing that the devil schemes to trick and hurt you, it's not an accident. [00:49:00]
We need to be people who know and understand the truth of God so that we can see through the deceptions of the devil. And the Bible describes this. And the Bible describes what it's like or how you gain that knowledge and that understanding. So for instance, the Bible would say we need to get for ourselves godly wisdom. [00:49:59]
Gaining the whole world makes all the sense in the world if I'm only defined by the world. But I'd have to know that Jesus says if you gain the whole world, you're going to lose your soul. We'll never pick that up on YouTube. That never shows up on TikTok. I only get that truth from God. So I have a knowledge of God and then I have discernment from God. [00:51:30]
If I don't do that, the deception will take root in me and it will define me and it will affect me and I will start to live my life off the common lies that I've been taught to live my life off of. So I'll look and say, "Well, the deception makes sense. The devil always distorts sex and sexuality." [00:53:20]
If you're not a Jesus follower yet, that's what God wants for you. She's an extreme example, but that's how it works. And you'll go from blind in a dark room. And if you'll let Jesus flip that switch, life will light up. And you'll see it for what it is. You'll see the schemes. You'll see the lies. You'll see the lies that have locked on to you. [01:03:51]
