Day 5: From Tribal Chiefs to Soccer Moms

Martyrdom fantasies in the Amazon felt heroic—until God whispered, “Your neighbor is just as unreached.” Tribal chiefs and suburban parents both need Christ. Excuses dissolve when we see every person as eternally significant. The same authority backing jungle missionaries backs your school carpool conversations. Where have you diminished your daily mission field? [38:24]

But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. Yet do it with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15, ESV)

God’s work is bigger than personal sight lines. God was stirring gospel life in Brazil, through leaders gathering, churches being planted, baptisms happening, and little communities meeting in places that seem almost forgotten. God brought church to a woman in a village of fifty people after she prayed for a way to gather with biblical community. God showed that he is shaping all of history while loving one person like she is the only person on the planet.

The Amazon became a picture of what it means to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth. A pastor faithfully shepherded four families in a tribe of thirteen, trusting that four could become five and five could become more. A study Bible became an overwhelming gift because access to Scripture and gospel tools is not normal everywhere. God’s people with extraordinary access to Bibles, resources, translations, and training carry a real privilege and a real responsibility.

The gospel became very simple at the doors of unreached families: “You have three minutes. Share the gospel.” The gospel did not require a perfect strategy, cultural mastery, or a polished moment. Christ came, died, and rose again so that he could give people his life and take their death. The gospel is like a lion: it does not need to be defended into effectiveness; it needs to be released.

Jesus grounds that freedom in his authority. Jesus does not fight darkness hoping things turn out okay. Jesus holds all authority in heaven and on earth, sends his people as they go, and remains with them always through the end of the age. The Spirit turns witness into something more than a human endeavor, because God himself does supernatural work through the truth that is shared.

Paul names the gospel “the power of God for salvation” because it offers what every other religious system cannot. Human righteousness cannot make anyone acceptable to God. God gives his own righteousness by faith and takes human unrighteousness upon himself in Christ. The gospel therefore announces grace, not a ladder of loyalty climbed in hopes of getting something from God.

The Amazon also exposes a hard truth: an unreached tribe and an unreached neighbor both need Jesus. God’s call to the ends of the earth includes the backyard, workplace, soccer field, dinner table, and everyday conversations. The noise of life often dulls the quiet nudge to encourage someone or share Christ. The call is not to wait for the flawless opening, but to be ready when God says, “You have three minutes. Share the gospel.”
