Emulating Christ: Love, Endurance, and Victory in Faith
Summary
### Summary
Good morning, everyone. It's a joy to be back at HCC and see both familiar and new faces. Today, I want to share a bit about our ministry with Word of Life, which has been a significant part of our lives for the past 30 years. We've been blessed to serve in various capacities, from youth ministry to international missions, and it's incredible to witness God's work across the globe. Our family has been deeply involved, and it's a rare treat to have them all here today.
Our ministry focuses on reaching youth with the gospel, and we've seen tremendous growth and impact. From camps in New York and Florida to Bible institutes in 16 countries, God is moving powerfully. We've had the privilege of teaching and mentoring young people, helping them take their next steps with Jesus. This summer alone, we've seen over 300 campers come to faith in Christ, and many more are being discipled to share their faith with others.
As we reflect on our journey, I want to encourage you with a message from 1 Peter 2. Peter wrote to believers who were facing severe persecution, reminding them that they were on the victory side because of Jesus. Despite the challenges and opposition, they were called to follow in Jesus' footsteps, demonstrating unselfish love, heroic endurance, and gracious generosity.
Jesus' life was marked by selfless love, even to the point of dying on the cross for our sins. He endured immense suffering and persecution, yet He remained faithful and gracious. As His followers, we are called to emulate His example, loving others unconditionally, standing firm in our faith, and responding to adversity with grace.
In our increasingly challenging culture, it's easy to feel like we're on the losing side. But Peter's words remind us that we are victorious in Christ. We may face trials and opposition, but we are called to persevere, knowing that our ultimate reward is in heaven. Let's commit to following Jesus' example, one step at a time, trusting that He will lead us to victory.
### Key Takeaways
1. Unselfish Love: Jesus' life was a testament to selfless love, reaching out to the marginalized and despised. He identified with sinners without condoning their sin, showing us that true love involves embracing people where they are. As followers of Christ, we are called to love others unconditionally, even when it's challenging. This kind of love can transform lives and draw people closer to God. [01:10:12]
2. Heroic Endurance: Peter's audience faced severe persecution, yet he encouraged them to endure faithfully. Jesus set the ultimate example of endurance, remaining steadfast in His mission despite immense suffering. We, too, must stay committed to the truth and our calling, even when it's difficult. Our perseverance in faith and service will bear fruit, often in ways we cannot see immediately. [01:14:36]
3. Gracious Generosity: Jesus responded to rejection and suffering with grace and forgiveness. From the cross, He prayed for His persecutors, demonstrating an extraordinary level of graciousness. As His followers, we are called to respond to adversity with the same spirit of generosity and forgiveness, trusting God to handle justice. This attitude can break down barriers and open hearts to the gospel. [01:19:32]
4. Victory in Christ: Despite the appearance of defeat, believers are on the victory side because of Jesus' resurrection. Peter reminded his readers that their suffering was temporary and that their ultimate inheritance was secure in heaven. This perspective helps us endure present trials with hope and confidence, knowing that our faithfulness will be rewarded. [01:01:44]
5. Following Jesus' Example: Jesus left us an example to follow, likened to a copybook heading that we trace out in our lives. This involves daily decisions to walk in His footsteps, demonstrating love, endurance, and grace. By focusing on the next step rather than the entire journey, we can faithfully follow Jesus and make a significant impact in our world. [01:07:25]

### Bible Study Discussion Guide
#### Bible Reading
1 Peter 2:20-23 (ESV)
> "For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly."

1 John 4:10-11 (ESV): "In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another."
Reflection: Think of someone in your life who is difficult to love. How can you show them unconditional love today, just as Jesus loves you?

### Quotes for Outreach
1. "We are so grateful for God's goodness in our lives. And I should just say, I'm going to have Laurie stand up for those who have never met Laurie, my dear wife, my better three-quarters. There she is. But Jeremy and Jonathan and Jessica, I can't see our three children because they're not here. I can't see them. I can't see them. They're not kids anymore, but there are three offspring. I don't know if you can say that. The four grandkids are all here. So why don't you just all stand up? Like, there they all are. And Sophie is here, and Brian is here. Anyway, get to know them. It would be, yeah, there you go." [46:52] (33 seconds)
2. "We just love sharing the gospel. We've had just over 2,000 come so far. And about 306 of them have told us that they trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior because of their time at camp. So we're really excited about that. And a lot of them went outside and put names on this board to say, I'm going to be praying for this friend of mine and this friend of mine and this friend of mine that they will come to know Jesus as their Savior." [50:42] (20 seconds)
3. "One of our favorite statements in our ministry at Word of Life is that we want to help young people take their next step with Jesus. That is really what we're all about. And a couple of times a year, I guess this year we're only doing it once, but we actually connect all these campuses together by, you ever heard of Zoom? Anybody hear that? We connect them all together. And we have this like global chapel. It's an amazing time where from eight o'clock in the morning, all of a sudden, all the way to 10 p.m. at night, you have people in different time zones coming together to pray together, to hear a great encouraging message from God's word." [53:13] (35 seconds)
4. "If we follow Jesus, we're on the victory side even when it seems like we're not. And I just want to remind you dear brothers and sisters in Christ and friends today of that truth. This is what Peter wants to remind them of. If we follow Jesus, we're on the victory side even when it seems like we're not." [01:06:06] (3 seconds)
5. "When you keep following the Lord Jesus, it leads you to a cross, my friends, but it doesn't end at the cross, hallelujah. It leads you to an empty tomb. Why is that? Because if we follow Jesus, we're on the victory side, even when it seems like we're not." [01:22:48] (-974 seconds)
### Quotes for Members
1. "It sure can feel that we are on the losing side of everything, right? But I'm just here to remind us, and it's not going to be me that reminds us this morning, actually it's going to be our brother Peter. And if you have a Bible and want to follow along, I'm going to read something from 1 Peter chapter 2. But when we look at God's accurate, unchanging, eternal, written word, it becomes very, very clear that if we are doing our best to follow Jesus, whatever that means, and we'll talk about that for a couple minutes, we're not on the losing side, we are on the victory side. It may not appear that way at the moment, but it is that way, and it will be very evidently that way someday." [01:01:44] (46 seconds)
2. "Jesus left us an example. The Greek word there was used to refer to what we would call a copybook heading. Now here's an old picture who uses blackboards anymore in classrooms right? But back in my day you know we had blackboards or whatever and above it you had the alphabet and it was it was it was a heading that that was a model to follow so you're learning how to write so the idea is okay that's how I make a capital letter a and a small letter a and my my job as a student was to learn to trace that out carefully the way that I saw it there that's the Greek word that Peter uses here Jesus left us a an example a a heading like that to trace it out to follow in his steps." [01:07:25] (43 seconds)
3. "One was an amazing example of unselfish love this is a really challenging thing to think about you see when Jesus died on the cross it was the climax of a life that was identified with human sin and suffering it started at his birth the fancy theological word is incarnation which means that God actually became a man this is the teaching of the bible it blows your mind when you think about that that God became a man there's mysteries to that that I can't fully comprehend but the first lesson in theology is that God is God and I am not and I'm not going to understand everything about God and so he became he became one of us." [01:09:05] (43 seconds)
4. "Christ did not return evil for evil instead he was an amazing example of graciousness of generosity what blows me away among many things is how from the cross he says father help me out here father what forgive them because why they don't know what they're doing what an amazing example of graciousness of generosity how do we react when people reject us let me put it straight up how do we how do we react when people reject us insult us mock us make fun of us dismiss us disregard our thoughts and opinions consider us absurd I know how my flesh wants to react like I want to self-protect I gotta uphold the honor of my good name but then I can't come back to this and we come back to this Christ left us an example he suffered for you leaving an example that you should walk in his steps." [01:19:32] (69 seconds)
5. "When you keep following the Lord Jesus, it leads you to a cross, my friends, but it doesn't end at the cross, hallelujah. It leads you to an empty tomb. Why is that? Because if we follow Jesus, we're on the victory side, even when it seems like we're not. And so I would like to just hope today that the words of Peter, spoken so many years ago to a massive group of people spread across a continent almost, could resonate here in this room in 2024. if the going is tough and sooner or later it does get tough as a follower of Jesus Christ, that you would be encouraged by Peter's words to follow in the footsteps of Jesus."
