Empowering Leaders for Church Growth and Vitality

Summary

In this gathering of ministers and leaders, we are reminded of the profound responsibility and privilege of leadership within the church. Leadership is not merely about holding a position but about continuous personal development and spiritual growth. The theme of this forum, "Building Leaders that Build the Church," underscores the necessity of developing both leadership aptitude and attitude. Aptitude refers to the skills and expertise required for leadership, while attitude encompasses the character and spiritual depth that give value to those skills.

The growth of any ministry is intrinsically linked to the growth of its leaders. As leaders, we must be vigilant about our personal development, as it sets the limit for the growth of the church. Our associations, the company we keep, and the leaders we choose to follow can significantly influence our growth. The health of a church is not measured by its size but by its spiritual vitality, which is a reflection of its leadership. As Hosea 4:9 states, "As the priest, so are the people." Therefore, the spiritual health of the pastor is crucial to the spiritual health of the congregation.

Leadership is a dynamic process that requires continuous capacity development. It is not static, and real leaders emerge through preparation and self-development rather than through prayer alone. God assigns us according to our abilities, and it is our responsibility to prepare ourselves for the tasks He has for us. This preparation involves developing clarity of vision, acquiring knowledge, being ambitious, and having the courage to face challenges.

Moreover, leadership is about influence and inspiration. A true leader motivates and mobilizes others towards a common goal. This requires a balance of aptitude and attitude, where character supports and enhances skills. People may admire a leader for their knowledge, but they will follow them for their character. Therefore, developing a strong spiritual life, humility, servanthood, and a sense of appreciation are essential attitudes for sustainable leadership.

Key Takeaways:

1. Leadership and Personal Development: The growth of a church is directly linked to the personal development of its leaders. A leader's spiritual and personal growth sets the limit for the church's growth. Therefore, leaders must continuously develop themselves to ensure the church's vitality and health. [09:45]

2. The Importance of Associations: The company a leader keeps can significantly influence their growth and effectiveness. Associations can either propel a leader forward or limit their potential. Therefore, leaders must choose their associations wisely to ensure they are conducive to growth and development. [10:47]

3. Balance of Aptitude and Attitude: While skills and expertise (aptitude) are important, it is the character (attitude) that gives value to those skills. A leader's character is what ultimately inspires and influences others to follow. Therefore, developing both aptitude and attitude is crucial for effective leadership. [24:14]

4. Vision and Conviction: A leader must have a clear vision and strong conviction. Vision provides direction and purpose, while conviction gives strength and determination to pursue that vision. A leader with a clear vision and strong conviction can inspire others to follow and achieve common goals. [36:02]

5. Courage and Resilience: Leadership requires courage to face challenges and resilience to overcome obstacles. A leader must be bold and steadfast, willing to take risks and face difficulties head-on. Courage and resilience are essential qualities for a leader to navigate the challenges of ministry effectively. [51:54]

Day 1: Leadership and Personal Growth: The Foundation of Church Vitality
The growth of a church is intricately tied to the personal development of its leaders. A leader's spiritual and personal growth sets the limit for the church's growth. This means that leaders must be committed to their own continuous development to ensure the church's vitality and health. Personal development is not just about acquiring new skills but also about deepening one's spiritual life and character. As leaders grow, they set a higher standard for the congregation, encouraging others to pursue their own spiritual journeys. The health of a church is not measured by its size but by its spiritual vitality, which is a reflection of its leadership. [09:45]

"Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving." (Colossians 2:6-7, ESV)

Reflection: In what specific ways can you commit to personal and spiritual growth this week to positively impact those around you?

Day 2: The Influence of Associations: Choosing Your Circle Wisely
The company a leader keeps can significantly influence their growth and effectiveness. Associations can either propel a leader forward or limit their potential. Therefore, leaders must choose their associations wisely to ensure they are conducive to growth and development. The people you surround yourself with can either inspire you to reach new heights or hold you back from achieving your potential. It's important to seek out relationships that challenge you to grow and support your spiritual journey. [10:47]

"Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm." (Proverbs 13:20, ESV)

Reflection: Who are the people in your life that inspire and challenge you to grow? How can you spend more intentional time with them this week?

Day 3: Balancing Aptitude and Attitude: The Heart of Effective Leadership
While skills and expertise (aptitude) are important, it is the character (attitude) that gives value to those skills. A leader's character is what ultimately inspires and influences others to follow. Therefore, developing both aptitude and attitude is crucial for effective leadership. People may admire a leader for their knowledge, but they will follow them for their character. This balance ensures that leaders not only have the skills to lead but also the integrity and humility to inspire others. [24:14]

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves." (Philippians 2:3, ESV)

Reflection: Reflect on your own balance of skills and character. What is one area of your character that you can work on to enhance your leadership?

Day 4: Vision and Conviction: Guiding Principles for Leadership
A leader must have a clear vision and strong conviction. Vision provides direction and purpose, while conviction gives strength and determination to pursue that vision. A leader with a clear vision and strong conviction can inspire others to follow and achieve common goals. This clarity and determination are essential for guiding a congregation or team towards a shared future. Vision without conviction is merely a dream, but when combined, they become a powerful force for change. [36:02]

"Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law." (Proverbs 29:18, ESV)

Reflection: What is your personal vision for your life and ministry? How can you strengthen your conviction to pursue this vision?

Day 5: Courage and Resilience: Navigating the Challenges of Leadership
Leadership requires courage to face challenges and resilience to overcome obstacles. A leader must be bold and steadfast, willing to take risks and face difficulties head-on. Courage and resilience are essential qualities for a leader to navigate the challenges of ministry effectively. These qualities enable leaders to stand firm in their convictions and lead others through times of uncertainty and change. [51:54]

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9, ESV)

Reflection: Identify a challenge you are currently facing. How can you draw on courage and resilience to address it this week?

Quotes

The personal growth of any leader practically sets limit to the growth of the church. Until a man is developed, the church he pastors or the ministry he leads cannot advance. The minister or the pastor is called the leader. Now, in a way, the word leader is taken from elite. [00:09:13]

I always encourage ministers to beware who you associate with. Because the association you keep will limit your growth and your spread. No one ever grows beyond the association he keeps. The company you keep. Determines the accomplishment you will make. [00:10:16]

The peak of church growth is healthiness not size many of us pray that church will grow numerically but we are doing nothing for the church to grow healthily now in the physical you see quite some people with big body but inside big diseases growing healthily is the ultimate growth of any church. [00:11:38]

Take heed to yourself and then he said to him then secondly take heed to your ministry Colossians chapter 4 verse 17 and then Acts 20 28 take heed to the flock now there are people who love ministry more than their personal spiritual life I've met a lot of people like that who will prefer to be in ministry and go to hell than to preserve their personal life. [00:14:14]

The leader must keep building, or if you allow me to use the word, developing himself on a continuous basis in order. To see the effect on the ministry, or the church, or the people that he is leading. Let me quickly also note here that there is no prayer you can pray for God to use you more than your preparation. [00:16:46]

Leadership is not static. Leadership is a process. It's not static. A leader is one who keeps developing capacity. Now, don't miss that word. Capacity development is a major task of a leader. Before I continue with the definition, even Jesus had to develop capacity. [00:19:05]

A leader is one who keeps developing capacity to influence, to inspire, then to direct, to motivate, to mobilize, to activate others to pursue a common goal and purpose. So, this is a compound definition which simply means a leader is an influence. A leader inspires. A leader inspires. A leader directs people. [00:20:42]

People may admire you for your aptitude, but they will follow you for your attitude. People may give you ovation for your IQ, but they will follow you for your character. There is intelligent content and there is character content that every leader must possess. There is character content that every leader must possess. [00:25:57]

Vision is the trade and stock of any leader. As a matter of fact, what the eye is to the body is what the leader is to a people. Let me repeat that again. What the eye is to the body is what a leader is to a people. Now, your eye, guides your choice. Your eyes, guides your feet. [00:31:42]

You cannot impress God with the knowledge you have because he gave you the knowledge. But you can let him know how ready you are with your zeal. Jesus was very zealous to a point that people recognized this and said the zeal of the house of the Lord has consumed them. Say it loud, amen. [00:46:57]

Moses told Joshua, Joshua, when he was living, Joshua chapter one, verse six, verse seven, and verse nine. Joshua, be strong and be thou courageous. Be strong. There are people and situations that want to intimidate you. Your pastoring rent is about expiring. Be strong and courageous. Be strong and courageous. [00:47:40]

Be courageous. Do you know that the grace of God does not work for weaklings? 2 Timothy 2, verse 1. He said, thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace of God. So grace works for strong -hearted people. Be strong in the grace of God. Say it loud, amen. Amen. [00:55:50]
