Jesus promised that His followers would receive power through the Holy Spirit, not merely to admire His life but to experience His presence and power in their own lives. This power is not for personal gain or self-improvement, but for the mission of Jesus—to be His witnesses in the world. The same Spirit that empowered Jesus in His ministry, from His conception to His resurrection, is given to every believer, enabling them to live out their faith with boldness, perseverance, and supernatural strength. The Christian life cannot be lived apart from this Spirit-empowered relationship, and we are called to continually seek and yield to the Spirit’s leading in every aspect of our lives. [01:24:13]
Acts 1:4-5, 8 (ESV)
4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
Reflection: In what area of your life do you most need to rely on the Holy Spirit’s power rather than your own strength, and how can you invite Him to lead you today?
The life of Jesus is marked by both His miraculous works and His authoritative words, which together reveal His identity as God among us. His sinless life, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection are the foundation of our faith, and His words offer forgiveness, hope, and eternal life to all who believe. As we trust in His words, we experience the reality of His works in our lives—transformation, healing, and new life. The invitation is not just to observe what Jesus did, but to listen to what He says and respond in faith, allowing His truth to shape our hearts and actions. [01:16:50]
Luke 24:44-48 (ESV)
44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.
Reflection: What is one specific teaching or promise of Jesus that you need to trust and act on this week?
Jesus commissions His followers to be His witnesses, starting where they are and extending to the ends of the earth. This mission is not reserved for a select few, but is the calling of every believer, empowered by the Holy Spirit to share the good news of Jesus’ victory over sin and death. The expansion of God’s kingdom happens through the church, as ordinary people step out in faith to reach their neighbors, their city, and the nations. Mission begins across the street as much as across the world, and each of us is sent by God to the places and people He has put in our lives. [01:36:16]
Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Reflection: Who is one person in your daily life that you sense God is calling you to reach out to with the love and message of Jesus this week?
The story of Theophilus reminds us that generosity and faithful stewardship are vital to the advancement of God’s kingdom. Investing our resources—time, finances, and abilities—into God’s mission is always worthwhile, as it enables the gospel to go further and impact more lives. True giving is not motivated by personal gain, but by love and obedience to Christ, trusting that God will use our offerings for His glory. Like Theophilus, we may never see the full impact of our generosity, but God multiplies what we give for the sake of His mission in the world. [01:43:07]
2 Corinthians 9:6-8 (ESV)
6 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
Reflection: What is one tangible way you can invest your time, resources, or abilities into God’s mission this week?
A Spirit-filled life is marked by forgiveness and surrender, following the example of Jesus who prayed, “not my will, but your will be done.” True witness for Christ means letting go of past hurts, forgiving those who have wronged us, and yielding our lives fully to God’s purposes. This kind of surrender is not a one-time act, but a daily choice to persevere in faith, to love sacrificially, and to trust God with the outcome. As we forgive and surrender, we become living testimonies of God’s grace, shining His light in a world that desperately needs hope and reconciliation. [01:46:15]
Ephesians 4:31-32 (ESV)
31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Reflection: Who is someone you need to forgive or release to God today, and what step can you take to begin that process of forgiveness and surrender?
Today marks the beginning of a journey through the book of Acts, a story that picks up where the Gospel of Luke leaves off, showing how Jesus, having completed His work on the cross, launches His kingdom on earth through the power of the Holy Spirit. This power is not reserved for a select few, but is given to all believers, equipping us for the mission Jesus has entrusted to us. The early church was not a grand institution at its inception—just a small group of ordinary people, empowered by an extraordinary God, called to bear witness to the resurrection and lordship of Jesus Christ.
The Christian life is not about admiring Jesus from a distance, but about experiencing His life and power through the Holy Spirit. Jesus, though fully God, lived out His humanity by relying on the Spirit, showing us what it means to be Spirit-filled and Spirit-led. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now lives in us, inviting us to participate in God’s ongoing mission. This is not about self-improvement or personal achievement, but about being witnesses—those who testify, even at great cost, to the reality of Jesus’ victory over sin and death.
Mission is at the heart of God’s purpose for His people. It starts where we are—across the street, in our neighborhoods, and extends to the ends of the earth. The expansion of God’s kingdom happens through the church, the one organism Jesus established to carry His message to all nations. This mission requires not only our words, but our generosity, our perseverance, and our willingness to surrender our own will to God’s. Like Theophilus, whose investment made possible the writing of Luke and Acts, we are called to invest our lives, resources, and time in what truly matters: the advancement of the gospel.
Forgiveness is a crucial part of this witness. As we go out, we are challenged to forgive those who have wronged us, embodying the grace we have received. Wherever we go, we are sent by God, indwelt by Christ, and led by the Spirit. Our lives are meant to be living testimonies to the glory and grace of Jesus, carrying His love and power into every place He sends us.
Acts 1:1-11 (ESV) — 1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach,
2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.
3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes,
11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
Luke 4:18-19 (ESV) — 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Romans 8:11 (ESV) — 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
But we have this great news to tell everyone, Jesus Christ conquered sin. He conquered death and he's alive and well on planet earth. And you and I are commissioned. We are on a mission into this world to tell others about the victory of Jesus. [01:15:31] (20 seconds) #VictoryInJesus
Christianity is about history. It's not about philosophy. There are certain religious systems like Buddhism. It's not based on a founder, but based on ideas. There are other religions that are based on a place, a holy location that you have to travel to. But the center of Christianity is not philosophy. It's not a place. The center of Christianity is a person, and his name is Jesus. And he invites us to have a personal relationship with him. [01:22:10] (32 seconds) #JesusCenterOfFaith
``If you take Jesus out, Christianity ceases to exist. If Jesus is dead, Christianity is dead. But because Jesus is alive, that explains why Christianity is alive and growing around the world today. Ultimately, it's all about him, all about Jesus, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. [01:22:47] (24 seconds) #AliveBecauseJesusLives
Jesus's life and power is not just to be admired, but it is to be experienced. How many of you thought as you've read through the Gospels, Jesus really lived an amazing life? But he doesn't want you just to admire his life. He wants you to experience his life through the person and the presence and the power of the third member of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. [01:24:05] (29 seconds) #ExperienceJesusLife
No, God wants us to live in the power of the Spirit every single day. You see, all of this, friends, is for mission. It's not so that you can be a better person or have a modified self -help program. It's not so that you can achieve your potential or so that you can meet your goals. It's not so that you would be all you can be and do all you want to do. It's exclusively about the mission of Jesus. [01:34:59] (33 seconds) #WitnessesToTheEnds
The most loving thing we can tell people is about Jesus and tell them that everything that they've heard and by the way they live is contrary. And so, you and I have a national mission. It's like throwing a rock into a pond when everything starts, rings out. Mission not only starts across the world. Mission starts across the street. [01:39:33] (28 seconds) #InvestInGodsKingdom
Not just giving, but giving for the rest of your life. Not only finances, but giving everything that you have by saying, Lord, not my will, but your will be done. And he says, you will be my witnesses. He says, This is my will. 39 times in the book of Acts he goes on to say and there were witnesses you know the word witness means martyr it's the same word for martyr and this is what it means it's one who trades his life who says I'm going to talk about Jesus even if I die because I know that I'm going to meet I know who I'm going to meet on the other side I no longer fear death so let us burn brighter for Christ.
