The journey through Acts begins with a simple but profound truth: if you follow Jesus, you are the church, and your address is where the church gathers and is sent from. The story of the early disciples is not just a historical account, but an invitation to see ourselves as people sent by God, right where we are. Just as the disciples had no idea where their journey with Jesus would take them, we too often stand at the threshold of the unknown, unsure of what it will cost or where it will lead. Yet, Jesus doesn’t ask us to have it all figured out. Instead, he calls us to trust, to wait on his Spirit, and to stand firm in his promises before we ever take a step.
The mission of God always starts with trust, not action. Jesus told his disciples to wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit, reminding them that the power to live on mission doesn’t come from our own strength, training, or readiness, but from the Spirit’s presence. This same Spirit that empowered the first believers is given to every follower of Jesus today. We are not called to be spectators, standing still and waiting for someone else to do the work. Instead, we are empowered to be witnesses—right where we are, in our homes, workplaces, and communities, and then outward to the world.
It’s easy to make excuses: “I’m not ready,” “I don’t know enough,” “I’m not called to ministry.” But Jesus’ promise is for all who trust him. The Spirit’s power is not reserved for the elite or the especially spiritual; it’s for every believer. The call is to stand in the promise, stand in the power, and stand in our place—seeing our current context as our mission field. The mission doesn’t require a passport or a platform, just a willingness to trust God and move forward in faith.
The challenge is clear: don’t stand still. The church is not meant to be a gathering of people waiting for someone else to act, but a movement of Spirit-empowered witnesses who see every place and every relationship as an opportunity to live sent. The mission starts where you stand—right now, right here.

Acts 1:1-11 (ESV) —
> In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
>
> So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
