Empowered Preaching: The Necessity of the Holy Spirit
Devotional
Day 1: The Essential Power of the Holy Spirit in Preaching
The power of the Holy Spirit is indispensable for effective gospel preaching. Without His anointing, our efforts can be fruitless, as human strength alone cannot bring about true transformation. The life of D.L. Moody serves as a powerful example of this truth. Despite his initial success, Moody recognized that his ministry lacked the divine empowerment necessary for lasting impact. It was only after he earnestly sought the Holy Spirit's anointing that his ministry was transformed, leading to profound changes in the lives of those he reached. This teaches us that true effectiveness in ministry comes not from human effort alone but from the Spirit's power. [02:57]
1 Corinthians 2:4-5 (ESV): "And my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God."
Reflection: In what areas of your life or ministry are you relying on your own strength rather than seeking the Holy Spirit's power? How can you invite Him to empower you today?
Day 2: The Invaluable Role of Prayer in Ministry
The prayers of godly women are invaluable in ministry, often discerning spiritual needs that others might miss. Their intercession can lead to powerful moves of God, as seen in the story of D.L. Moody and the two women who prayed for him. These women recognized the need for divine power in Moody's ministry and committed themselves to pray for him. Their prayers were instrumental in bringing about a significant transformation in his ministry, highlighting the critical role of prayer in supporting and empowering ministry. This challenges us to value and seek the prayers of others, recognizing that they can discern needs that might be overlooked in the busyness of service. [08:08]
Colossians 4:12 (ESV): "Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God."
Reflection: Who are the prayer warriors in your life? How can you engage them in praying for specific areas of your ministry or personal growth?
Day 3: A Deep Hunger for the Holy Spirit's Fullness
A deep hunger for the Holy Spirit's fullness is crucial for effective ministry. Like D.L. Moody, we should not be content with mere activity but should yearn for divine power in our service. Moody's experience teaches us that true effectiveness comes from a deep reliance on the Holy Spirit, not from human effort alone. This hunger for the Spirit's fullness should drive us to seek a deeper experience of God's presence, allowing Him to work through us in powerful ways. It is a call to prayer, to seek God's face, and to ask for His Spirit to fill us anew. [09:41]
Ephesians 3:16-19 (ESV): "That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."
Reflection: What steps can you take today to cultivate a deeper hunger for the Holy Spirit's presence in your life?
Day 4: Transformative Ministry Through the Holy Spirit
Transformative ministry comes from the Holy Spirit's presence, not from new techniques or messages. When the gospel is preached with the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, it leads to profound changes in the lives of listeners, as seen in the early church and in Moody's ministry. This is not about adopting new methods but about relying on the Spirit's power to bring about transformation. The challenge is to examine whether we are truly experiencing the Holy Spirit's fullness and allowing Him to work through us in powerful ways. [12:22]
Acts 4:31 (ESV): "And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness."
Reflection: How can you ensure that your ministry is driven by the Holy Spirit's power rather than human techniques or strategies?
Day 5: Examining Our Experience of the Holy Spirit's Fullness
We must examine whether we are truly experiencing the Holy Spirit's fullness. It's not about having the Spirit but about whether He has all of us. This requires a willingness to surrender every area of our lives to His control, allowing Him to work through us in powerful ways. The challenge is to seek a deeper experience of God's fullness, allowing Him to transform us and use us for His purposes. This is a call to prayer, to seek God's face, and to ask for His Spirit to fill us anew. [13:43]
Galatians 5:25 (ESV): "If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you find yourself holding back from surrendering to the Holy Spirit? What would surrendering this area to Him actually look like in terms of daily habits?
Sermon Summary
In our gathering this evening, we delved into the profound truth found in 1 Peter 1:12, focusing on the necessity of preaching the gospel with the Holy Spirit's power. This is not merely about delivering a message but doing so with divine empowerment. Reflecting on the life of D.L. Moody, we see a vivid illustration of this principle. Moody, despite his success, realized his need for the Holy Spirit's anointing, which transformed his ministry. His experience teaches us that true effectiveness in ministry comes not from human effort alone but from the Spirit's power.
We are reminded of the critical role of prayer, particularly the prayers of godly women, in supporting and empowering ministry. These prayers can discern needs that might be overlooked in the busyness of service. The story of Moody and the two women who prayed for him highlights the importance of seeking divine power for service. It challenges us to yearn for the fullness of the Holy Spirit, to the point where we cannot continue without it.
The sermon also emphasized the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in preaching. When the gospel is preached with the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, it leads to profound changes in the lives of listeners, as seen in the early church and in Moody's ministry. This is not about new techniques or messages but about the Spirit's presence and power.
As we reflect on these truths, we are called to examine our own ministries and lives. Are we merely busy, or are we truly empowered by the Holy Spirit? The challenge is to seek a deeper experience of God's fullness, allowing Him to work through us in powerful ways. This is a call to prayer, to seek God's face, and to ask for His Spirit to fill us anew.

Sermon Clips
I want to suggest to you that what we do need is Gospel preaching but we need that preaching to be done in the power of the Holy Spirit. Now I don't know what Peter was thinking uh as he was writing this but I'm sure immediately lots of thoughts flooded his mind when he even mentioned that having preached the gospel to you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven. [00:02:57]
Peter had the privilege of preaching the gospel to his own countrymen to a great crowd that were gathered on the day of Pentecost and he preached with unusual power a holy spirit Power, so much so that the results were quite tremendous 3 000 people converted in a single day. Now I don't know about you, but I I don't know how Peter slept that night. [00:03:13]
I remember two holy women who used to come to my meetings. It was delightful to see them in the congregation when I began to preach I could tell by the expression on their faces that they were praying for me. At the close of the Sunday evening service they would say to me we've been praying for you. I said why don't you pray for the people there was pray for souls to get saved. [00:05:10]
I need power I said to myself why I thought I had power. I had a large Sunday school and the largest congregation in Chicago there were some conversions at this time I was in a sense satisfied but right along these two Godly women kept praying for me and their Earnest talk about being anointed for special service set me thinking. [00:06:14]
I asked them to come and talk with me and we got down on our knees they poured out their hearts that I might receive the anointing from the Holy Spirit and there came a great hunger into my soul. I didn't I didn't know what it was I began to pray as I never did before I really felt that I did not want to live if I could not have this power for service. [00:07:51]
I went to preaching again, the sermons were not different, I did not present any new truths and yet hundreds were converted. I would not now be placed back where I was before that blessed experience if you gave me all Glasgow, it would be as the small dust of the balance. Now that's Mr Moody's testimony. [00:09:41]
The first thing I want to stress is the value of the prayers of Godly sisters. We're we're glad that we've got this group of men praying together but Brethren we've got to get the sisters praying we really need it desperately it seems to me that that the Hannas have always been there when Revival is needed most. [00:10:43]
Often sisters can discern what we cannot discern in our busyness for the Lord, that is that we're often powerless. You see we're working, messages are being preached and yes occasionally very occasionally souls are being saved and we can be smugly satisfied, because as men were activity driven and if we're busy and if we're working we feel like we're doing what we should be doing. [00:11:36]
We need to yearn for the fullness of the holy spirit in our lives so much so that we cannot bear the thought of going on as we are. Moody called it a hunger in his soul. Lord give us that hunger in our souls for divine power Upon Our Lives in service that's what he had he had this hunger and he he couldn't just get go back to the way it was. [00:12:22]
Many a preacher has had similar encounters. Lloyd Jones very used of God in London twice in his ministry he had those encounters where he felt like the presence of God was so real he had to ask him to stay his hand and he preached with unusual power as a result of these things men like Jacques troop from Scotland Douglas Brown from London. [00:13:43]
It seems to be Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3 19 realized in an individual life remember he prayed for the Christians at Ephesus that they might be filled with all the fullness of God and it seems to me that these crisis moments these men experience a the fullness of God like they've never known before and it changes their preaching. [00:14:13]
I believe that that is the difference and so as we pray together this evening it's the eve of the Lord's Day some of us are going to have the responsibility to preach kind of preaching is it going to be is it just filling a busy schedule is it another meeting in a full calendar is it a meeting where maybe Discerning sisters will will see there's great business but there's no power.
