The early church was not built by perfect or extraordinary people, but by ordinary men and women who were empowered by the Holy Spirit to become witnesses of Jesus to the ends of the earth. This empowerment was not just for the apostles, but for all believers, and it is the same Spirit who calls and equips us today to participate in God’s advancing kingdom. The Holy Spirit transforms our weaknesses into strength and gives us the boldness to step into God’s mission, no matter our background or past. [51:06]
Acts 1:8 (ESV)
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
Reflection: Where in your life do you sense God inviting you to step out in faith, trusting the Holy Spirit to empower you beyond your own abilities?
The first believers devoted themselves to learning, fellowship, breaking bread, prayer, and radical generosity, creating a community where needs were met and God’s presence was tangible. Their daily lives were marked by joy, unity, and a willingness to share, resulting in favor with people and continual growth as more were drawn to Jesus. This picture challenges us to examine our own faith and community, asking where we might return to these foundational practices to experience God’s movement afresh. [52:44]
Acts 2:42-47 (ESV)
"And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved."
Reflection: What is one practical way you can devote yourself to deeper community or generosity this week?
God delights in using regular, imperfect people—those who may feel unqualified or broken—to accomplish His purposes and reach others with the gospel. Like Philip, who was not an apostle or a person of status, we are called to respond to needs around us, trusting that God can use our simple acts of obedience to change lives. The kingdom of God advances not through the most famous or gifted, but through humble, Spirit-filled people willing to say yes to God’s prompting. [01:01:24]
1 Timothy 1:15 (ESV)
"The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost."
Reflection: In what area of your life have you disqualified yourself from being used by God, and how might you offer that to Him today?
People around us are searching for meaning, hope, and answers, even if they don’t always show it; the gospel is the answer they need, and God calls us to share it boldly, not shrink back in fear or insecurity. Like Philip with the Ethiopian eunuch, we are often placed in moments where someone is ready to hear about Jesus, and our willingness to speak can be the turning point in their story. The world’s brokenness is not a reason to retreat, but an opportunity for revival as we offer the hope of Christ. [01:07:45]
Isaiah 53:5-7 (ESV)
"But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth."
Reflection: Who is one person in your life who needs hope, and how can you intentionally share Jesus with them this week?
No act of obedience to God is insignificant; even seemingly small or unnoticed moments—like Philip’s encounter with the Ethiopian or Pearl Good’s prayers—can have generational and global impact in God’s kingdom. We may never see the full results of our faithfulness, but God uses every seed planted, every prayer prayed, and every person reached to build His church in ways beyond our imagination. Our call is to be faithful to the one person God puts in front of us, trusting Him with the outcome. [01:13:53]
Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV)
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God."
Reflection: Who is the “one person” God is putting on your heart to reach this year, and what is your next step toward them?
The story of the church’s birth in Acts is a story of ordinary people, empowered by the Holy Spirit, stepping into God’s advancing kingdom. Jesus’ followers, once broken and uncertain, are transformed at Pentecost when the Spirit descends, and suddenly, the same Peter who denied Jesus becomes a bold witness, leading thousands to faith. The early church is marked by devotion, generosity, unity, and daily miracles—evidence that God’s kingdom is not static but always moving forward through people willing to say yes to Him.
Discipleship, as Jesus defines it, is not a religious formality or an academic pursuit. It’s a radical invitation to follow, to deny ourselves, and to join Jesus in His mission. Unlike the world’s systems, where you must apply or qualify, Jesus calls each of us by name, regardless of our background or brokenness. The story of Philip in Acts 8 illustrates this beautifully: a man with no formal credentials, chosen to serve, is led by the Spirit into a divine encounter with an Ethiopian official. Through simple obedience, Philip becomes the unlikely catalyst for the gospel’s spread into Africa—a reminder that God delights in using the humble and available.
Three lies often keep us from stepping into this adventure: “I don’t have what it takes,” “They aren’t interested,” and “What difference will it make?” Philip’s story dismantles each one. He wasn’t an apostle or a scholar, but he was willing. The Ethiopian was hungry for truth, and a single act of obedience sparked a movement that would shape church history. In God’s kingdom, no act of faithfulness is insignificant. The story of Pearl Good, the unknown intercessor behind Billy Graham’s ministry, reminds us that heaven celebrates the unseen and the overlooked.
The call is simple but profound: Who is the one person God is asking you to reach this year? If every believer embraced this, the impact would be exponential. Discipleship is not about grand gestures but about daily, Spirit-led obedience—seeing the hurting, responding to needs, and trusting that God can use even our smallest yes to change eternity.
Acts 8:26-39 (ESV) — 26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. 27 And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this:
“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter
and like a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he opens not his mouth.
33 In his humiliation justice was denied him.
Who can describe his generation?
For his life is taken away from the earth.”
34 And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.
Acts 2:42-47 (ESV) — 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Can I tell you today that as I've had this topic assigned to me and I've thought more about it, I've just come to the point where I've realized that the endeavor of my life is to follow after Jesus. I used to think this was more complicated. I used to think this was my thing to figure out in my calling. But the longer I go in this thing, I have just come to realize that the kingdom of God is advancing on this earth. His spirit is building his church. And the goal and the endeavor of my life is not to make my own plan. It's to say, what is Jesus doing? What is Jesus building? What does Jesus care about? How is Jesus speaking? And how can I get as close to him as possible? [00:55:13] (43 seconds) #FollowJesusFirst
But in order for us to be used by God, Father's house, you are going to have to come to the conclusion that you have what it takes to be used by God. You are going to have to come to the conclusion that God just might want to use you. You and all of your regular, jacked up, normal self. [01:01:41] (24 seconds) #YouAreChosen
Do you know today I can say unquestionably, unequivocally, without even asking your story, that you sat with and you probably walked by someone this week that you could have been an answer to their deepest prayer? And I point that mirror back at myself too, just so you know. You don't need to look very far to find brokenness in our world, but you do need to look. [01:05:00] (23 seconds) #BeTheAnswer
Can I tell you today, the second lie you will have to overcome to be used as a disciple of God and to see a move of God is they aren't interested in what I have to say. I love this story. What is he interested in? He's interested in the same thing our world is in. [01:07:01] (19 seconds) #TheyCareWhatYouSay
And we somehow have created this thought process in this environment. Like we don't know what is going out in the world right now. Are you aware? And if not, I'm about to tell you that every secular sociologist and scientist said that we are living in the most hopeless, anxious, depressed world that has ever existed in the United States of America. The CDC released that one in five Americans is struggling with mental illness. Former Surgeon General in 2021 said that mental health crisis in America will be the defining act of this generation. [01:08:02] (36 seconds) #MentalHealthRevival
If you have an encounter with Jesus at our church, get baptized in two weeks. There's no class. There's no secret handshake. There's no, are you comfortable? There's, I'm in a chariot. You told me about Jesus. Get in the water. [01:10:03] (18 seconds) #NothingIsInsignificant
So, John, are you telling me that Philip the evangelist, the not trained, the one who never been with Jesus, the guy that gets teleported because of one moment of obedience and then an explanation of the gospel, that he sparked the flame that began the African church? Yep. John, are you telling me that me that went through the divorce five years ago, that by sharing the gospel with a co -worker, it could change a generation? Are you telling me that me who has a problem talking in front of people full of mental illness, that I'm, yep, because that's kingdom math. [01:13:32] (42 seconds) #OrdinaryBuildsKingdom
If every one of us in this room said 365 days from now one person will know Jesus that does not know Jesus in my life we would be done we'd have to buy new buildings Pastor Mark would be mad at me specifically because we'd be starting another campaign that's what being a disciple means Jesus who's hurting around me and all I have to do is be obedient.
