Empowered Living: The Role of the Holy Spirit

Summary

In today's gathering, we delved into the profound role of the Holy Spirit in our lives, emphasizing the necessity of His presence for living a true Christian life. We began by acknowledging the importance of doctrine as a foundation for our faith, likening it to a faith anchor that secures us amidst the cultural and religious challenges we face. Doctrine, as we discussed, is not just a set of beliefs but a tapestry that reveals the identity and character of God, providing us with a solid ground to stand on.

We then shifted our focus to the Holy Spirit, the often misunderstood and overlooked third person of the Trinity. Despite the mystery surrounding Him, the Holy Spirit is essential for empowering us to live the Christian life. We explored His personhood, affirming that He is not an impersonal force but a personal being with whom we can have a relationship. The Holy Spirit is integral to our understanding of God, as He speaks, testifies, and guides us into all truth.

The work of the Holy Spirit is vast, beginning with His indwelling presence at the moment of salvation. This indwelling marks us as belonging to God, securing our identity as His children. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, convinces us of our need for God, and converts us through regeneration, making us new creations in Christ. Furthermore, He completes us, ensuring our eternal inheritance and sonship.

However, the Christian life is not just about being indwelt by the Spirit but also about being filled with the Spirit. This filling is dynamic and requires our daily submission to His leading. It is through the filling of the Holy Spirit that we can bear fruit, grow in the knowledge of God, and live empowered lives. We discussed the importance of abiding in Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us and guide us in every aspect of our lives.

In conclusion, we are called to live not by our flesh but by the Spirit, continually seeking His guidance and strength. This requires a conscious decision to surrender to His will, allowing Him to lead us in every moment. As we navigate the challenges of life, the Holy Spirit is our constant helper, equipping us to live out God's will and bear witness to His love and grace.

Day 1: Doctrine as the Foundation of Faith
Doctrine serves as the anchor for our faith, providing a solid foundation amidst the cultural and religious challenges we face. It is not merely a set of beliefs but a comprehensive tapestry that reveals the identity and character of God. Understanding doctrine helps us to stand firm in our faith, offering us truth to build our lives upon. In a world where beliefs are constantly challenged, having a strong doctrinal foundation ensures that we remain grounded and secure in our relationship with God. [33:31]

"For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." (1 Corinthians 1:18, ESV)

Reflection: What specific doctrine or belief has been a source of strength for you during challenging times, and how can you deepen your understanding of it this week?

Day 2: The Holy Spirit as a Personal Guide
The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force but a personal being who plays a crucial role in our relationship with God. He speaks, testifies, and guides us into all truth, making His personhood essential for experiencing His power in our lives. Understanding the Holy Spirit as a personal guide allows us to develop a deeper relationship with Him, enabling us to be more receptive to His leading and guidance. By acknowledging His presence, we open ourselves to the transformative work He desires to accomplish in us. [36:49]

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you." (John 14:26, ESV)

Reflection: How can you cultivate a more personal relationship with the Holy Spirit this week, and what steps will you take to listen to His guidance more attentively?

Day 3: The Assurance of the Holy Spirit's Indwelling
At the moment of salvation, the Holy Spirit indwells us, marking us as God's children and securing our eternal inheritance. This indwelling is a permanent and unconditional assurance of our identity in Christ. It is through the Holy Spirit's presence within us that we are reminded of our belonging to God and the security of our salvation. This assurance empowers us to live confidently, knowing that we are never alone and that our identity is firmly rooted in Christ. [40:51]

"In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory." (Ephesians 1:13-14, ESV)

Reflection: In what ways does the assurance of the Holy Spirit's indwelling impact your daily life, and how can you remind yourself of this truth when you face doubts or fears?

Day 4: The Dynamic Filling of the Holy Spirit
The filling of the Holy Spirit is a dynamic process that requires our daily submission to His leading. It empowers us to bear fruit, grow in knowledge, and live transformed lives. Abiding in Christ is key to experiencing the fullness of the Spirit's work, as it allows us to be continually filled and guided by Him. This dynamic filling is not a one-time event but a daily choice to surrender to the Spirit's influence, enabling us to live empowered and fruitful lives. [47:51]

"And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart." (Ephesians 5:18-19, ESV)

Reflection: What specific area of your life do you need to submit to the Holy Spirit's leading today, and how will you actively seek His filling in that area?

Day 5: Living by the Spirit's Guidance
The Christian life is about living by the Spirit rather than by the flesh. This requires a conscious decision to surrender to His leading, allowing Him to guide us in every moment. Through the Spirit, we are equipped to live out God's will and bear witness to His love and grace. By choosing to live by the Spirit, we align ourselves with God's purposes and experience the fullness of life that He intends for us. [50:43]

"But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do." (Galatians 5:16-17, ESV)

Reflection: What is one practical step you can take today to ensure you are living by the Spirit's guidance rather than by your own desires?

Quotes

Doctrine is essential to the Christian life. It is the established set of beliefs handed down through Scripture, through church tradition, through church authority that provides truth for every one of us to walk on. And so whether it's the doctrine of God, whether it's the doctrine of Scripture, whether it's the doctrine of future things, whether it's the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, these are truths upon which we build our faith. [00:32:05] (31 seconds) Edit Clip

Now personally, I think of doctrine as a faith anchor. It secures our lives so that when we come into the winds of religious lies and we come through the currents of cultural affections, that we won't be swept away. That it's the truth of God, it's the truth of God's Word that we build our lives on. See, the beauty of doctrine is that it paints a picture and it weaves a tapestry of who God is, and it offers us a glimpse of His identity, His character, His attributes, His glory. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, equal and inseparable from the Father and the Son. You have Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is holy. He is sovereign. He is omnipresent. He is omniscient. He is omnipotent. He is just. He is eternal. He's immutable. He's righteous. He's loving, just like the Father and the Son, because they are one, not separate. [00:35:10] (28 seconds) Edit Clip

We find that Jesus Himself, speaking of the Holy Spirit, in John 14, 6, says He is personal. He actually uses a masculine pronoun in the Greek, and when He says, but the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, who the Father will send Him in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I've told you. Meaning, the Holy Spirit is not an it. It's a he. It's a he. And He's personal. And it's with whom we can have a relationship with God. [00:35:54] (33 seconds) Edit Clip

The indwelling on the Holy Spirit occurs with everybody who's in the found category. The moment that you receive Christ as your Savior, God deposits the Holy Spirit inside of you and you are sealed, you are marked, you are branded by the Spirit. That guarantees your redemption. It guarantees the security of your faith. Now, what happens when the Holy Spirit indwells us? He does some amazing things. [00:41:09] (32 seconds) Edit Clip

What we see is that He does things that we can't do ourselves. For example, can you convict anyone of their sin? No. That's the work of the Holy Spirit. Can you convince someone that they're lost? No. That's the work of the Holy Spirit. Can you convert someone to salvation? No. That's the work of the Holy Spirit. The only thing you and I have in the process of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is that we can convey the message that God so loved the world. [00:41:51] (37 seconds) Edit Clip

And so, He convicts us. Listen to John 16, 8 through 11. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I go, I will send Him to you. When He comes, He will prove to the world to be in the wrong about sin, righteousness and judgment. About sin, because people do not believe in me. About righteousness, because I am going to the Father. Where you can see me no longer about judgment. Because the prince of this world, which is Satan, now stands condemned. [00:42:31] (36 seconds)

And so, the convicting the work of the Holy Spirit is simply this. He confronts people about their sin. That's His job. It's His job alone to confront people about their sin. To say what you've done is not the heart of God. It's not the will of God. He also convinces. But when the Holy Spirit, but when He, the Spirit truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. The Holy Spirit comes to convince us of our need for God, and He does it by compelling us to the love of God. [00:43:06] (34 seconds) Edit Clip

And so, the Holy Spirit's job is to convince us of the love of God that compels us to want to know God. And then He converts. Titus 3, verses 4 through 7, when the kindness and love of our Savior appeared, He saved us. We don't save ourselves. He saved us. Not because of the righteous things we have done, but because of His what? Mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the what? Holy Spirit. [00:44:29] (35 seconds) Edit Clip

And so, in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, salvation was made available to anyone who by faith would believe and receive the grace of God. And to those who believed, the Bible says He transforms our life through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. And so, the Holy Spirit makes us a new creation. The old is gone. Behold, all things become new. That is the work of the Spirit of God. [00:44:55] (29 seconds) Edit Clip

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the filling of the Holy Spirit will never leave you. The filling of the Holy Spirit can be taken off and put back on and taken off and put back on. And it's all conditioned upon your response to the leading of the Holy Spirit. So let me kind of go into this. Although the Spirit indwells in us immediately at salvation, His work in us and on us and through us takes a lifetime. [00:47:54] (37 seconds) Edit Clip

A lot of people call this the sanctification process. That is, I'm being set apart from sin to God, and God is renewing me. So every day I become a little bit more like Jesus. The filling of the Holy Spirit is dynamic and temporary, and it's controlled by the Spirit as we submit to Him. One commentator said it this way, although we're sealed and indwelt.
