Empowered by the Transformative Power of the Gospel
Summary
In today's reflection, we explored the concept of gospel empowerment as outlined in 1 Thessalonians 1:5. This passage reminds us that the gospel is not just a message delivered in words but a transformative power that impacts our lives profoundly. The gospel comes to us in five distinct ways: through the word, power, the Holy Spirit's anointing, full assurance, and for our benefit. Each of these elements plays a crucial role in how the gospel empowers us.
Firstly, the gospel is delivered through the word. Faith is born from hearing the word of God, as emphasized in the book of James. The spoken word of God is powerful, as it was in the creation narrative in Genesis. However, the gospel's power extends beyond mere words. It is the power of God for salvation, as Paul writes in Romans 1. This power is transformative, offering salvation to both Jews and Gentiles alike.
Secondly, the gospel is accompanied by the Holy Spirit's anointing. The Spirit empowers the message, making it effective and life-changing. The Holy Spirit's presence in the gospel message ensures that it is not just heard but experienced in its full power, leading to transformation and salvation.
Thirdly, the gospel provides full assurance of our salvation. We can trust in God's promises, knowing that if we call upon the name of Jesus, we will be saved. This assurance is a cornerstone of our faith, giving us confidence in our salvation and the power of the gospel.
Lastly, the gospel is for our benefit. It enriches our lives by allowing us to witness its power in action, transforming lives and bringing salvation. The ultimate benefit is eternal life, but we also experience the gospel's benefits here and now as we see its impact on ourselves and others.
As we reflect on these truths, let us embrace the empowerment of the gospel in our lives, living out its principles and sharing its transformative power with others.

Day 1: The Word as a Creative Force
The gospel is delivered through the word, which is powerful and transformative. The spoken word of God is not just a collection of sounds or letters; it is a creative force that brings faith to life. Just as God spoke the universe into existence, His word continues to create and transform lives today. When we hear the word of God, it has the power to penetrate our hearts, challenge our beliefs, and inspire us to live in alignment with His will. The word is the foundation upon which our faith is built, and it is through hearing and receiving this word that we are empowered to live out the gospel. [06:00]
"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it." (Isaiah 55:10-11, ESV)
Reflection: How can you intentionally create space in your daily routine to hear and meditate on the word of God, allowing it to transform your thoughts and actions?
Day 2: The Gospel's Transformative Power
Beyond words, the gospel is the power of God for salvation. It is a transformative force that offers salvation to all who believe, both Jews and Gentiles. This power is not limited by human boundaries or distinctions; it is available to everyone who opens their heart to receive it. The gospel's transformative power is evident in the way it changes lives, turning hearts of stone into hearts of flesh, and bringing hope to the hopeless. It is a dynamic force that works within us, enabling us to live in a way that reflects God's love and grace to the world. [06:00]
"And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved." (Ephesians 2:1-5, ESV)
Reflection: Identify one area of your life where you need the transformative power of the gospel. How can you invite God to work in that area today?
Day 3: The Holy Spirit's Anointing
The Holy Spirit empowers the gospel message, ensuring it is not just heard but experienced in its full power. This anointing leads to transformation and salvation, as the Spirit works within us to reveal the truth of the gospel and apply it to our lives. The presence of the Holy Spirit in the gospel message is what makes it effective and life-changing. It is through the Spirit's anointing that we are able to understand and embrace the depth of God's love and grace, and it is through the Spirit's power that we are equipped to live out the gospel in our daily lives. [06:00]
"But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth." (1 John 2:20-21, ESV)
Reflection: In what ways can you become more aware of the Holy Spirit's presence and anointing in your life, and how can you respond to His leading today?
Day 4: Assurance of Salvation
The gospel provides full assurance of our salvation. We can trust in God's promises, knowing that if we call upon the name of Jesus, we will be saved. This assurance is a cornerstone of our faith, giving us confidence in our salvation and the power of the gospel. It is not based on our own efforts or merits, but on the finished work of Christ on the cross. This assurance allows us to live with peace and joy, knowing that our eternal destiny is secure in Him. [11:30]
"And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life." (1 John 5:11-13, ESV)
Reflection: How does the assurance of your salvation impact the way you live your daily life, and how can you share this assurance with someone who may be struggling with doubt?
Day 5: The Gospel's Benefits
The gospel enriches our lives by allowing us to witness its power in action, transforming lives and bringing salvation. The ultimate benefit is eternal life, but we also experience its benefits here and now as we see its impact on ourselves and others. The gospel brings hope, peace, and purpose to our lives, and it empowers us to live in a way that reflects God's love and grace to the world. As we embrace the gospel's benefits, we are called to share its transformative power with others, inviting them to experience the same hope and salvation that we have found in Christ. [11:30]
"For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ." (Titus 2:11-13, ESV)
Reflection: Who in your life needs to experience the benefits of the gospel? How can you be intentional about sharing the hope and transformation you have found in Christ with them today?
Quotes
So if you're not in one of those groups, you need to find one. There's a, there's a northern group, there's a central group, and there is a southern group. And so you need to plug yourself into one of those three at Lexington Park Baptist Church. We meet at 6pm. So call the church office if you don't have a group and you're in our local area and want to be a part of a fellowship group. Hey, everybody. Um, today we're going to be picking back up. We're talking about this gospel oriented church, which Lexington Park Baptist Church is. [00:05:21]
And now we're going to look at gospel empowerment. So if you want to open your Bibles, you can, and we are going to be in first Thessalonians chapter one. And we're going to be looking at, uh, verse five, verse five today is what we're looking at. It says, because our gospel did not come to you in power, but also in word in the Holy Spirit with full assurance, you know how we lived among you for your benefit. [00:05:51]
And it does it here, not in word only, right? But it does, the gospel is proclaimed the word. Uh, the gospel also comes with power. The gospel comes with the Holy Spirit's anointing. The gospel comes with full assurance and the gospel comes with a benefit. So these five concepts of empowering us, a gospel empowerment. [00:06:24]
Um, I could preach a sermon on each one of the issues. Um, and it was just one point of the sermon Sunday. So today I'm going to try to cover all five of these, um, and not go into great detail about some, but in word, listen, faith comes by hearing the word of God. James tells us that the book of James, James two, faith comes by hearing the word of God or the message of Christ. [00:06:54]
So the word of God, the gospel comes into our life, not through word only. It says right here in this text, right? But our gospel did not come to you in word only. It did come in word. He proclaimed it, right? But the power of the gospel goes beyond just its spoken word. But how powerful is the spoken word? It created Genesis chapter one, God spoke and it created. We see here in James, uh, you know, faith without works is dead. We know that faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God or the message of Christ, the gospel. Faith comes by hearing that gospel. So it did come in word, but not word alone. [00:07:27]
So the gospel is powerful. In fact, we know in Romans chapter one, that we're unashamed of the gospel because the gospel is the power, the power to save first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. [00:08:11]
So we have to tap into that power. So we have to tap into that power. The word produces faith. The power, the unashamedness. We know it's the power to save. We know the gospel, the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the good news that Jesus saves. That's power. That's true power. That's true. Transformative power. So we have power. We have the word. We have the power. We have the anointing. The anointing is, it says it's common spirit. Look right there. Look, I mean, look right there in chapter, in chapter one, verse five. [00:08:26]
Didn't come to your word. Didn't come to your word only, but in power in the Holy Spirit, right? There's a comma there. So the spirit of God anoints the message of Christ. [00:09:00]
The spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, which is in the Trinity, the third person of the Godhead. He literally, he literally anoints the gospel message. [00:09:13]
It's powerful because it comes with the anointing of the Holy Spirit. It comes with the anointing. When you preach and proclaim it in word and in power, the Holy Spirit is there anointing that message, anointing that power over your life. It empowers you. The Holy Spirit is empowering you. Do you hear the word? As you experience it in the fullness of its power. It starts to move in your life. Salvation comes upon you. You begin to change. [00:09:29]
And we begin to see the power of the Holy Spirit move in our lives in a very unique way because of the gospel. So the gospel is brought to us in word. The gospel is brought to us in anointing. [00:09:59]
And so the gospel is then also, the gospel is also oriented our lives to full assurance. Now, what's this a full assurance of? The full assurance of our salvation. Listen, we know we're saved because God's a man of his word. [00:10:19]
If Jesus says you call upon my name, you will be saved. If Jesus says the gospel is the power to save, Paul writes that in his word, right? If the word of God is telling us that the gospel brings salvation, it's the power to save both to the Jew and to the Gentile. Now, that is powerful. That is powerful. [00:10:32]
