Empowered by the Holy Spirit: A Transformative Journey

Summary

In today's gathering, we explored the profound and transformative power of the Holy Spirit, focusing on the four types of baptisms mentioned in the Bible. We began by acknowledging God's provision and care, emphasizing that our trust and faith are firmly rooted in His kingdom. As we bring our tithes and offerings, we participate in the divine cycle of sowing and reaping, furthering God's kingdom on earth.

Our main focus was on the baptism of the Holy Spirit, a topic we've been delving into for several weeks. We examined Acts 1:8, where Jesus promises that His followers will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them, enabling them to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. This promise is not new; it was prophesied in the Old Testament, as seen in Isaiah and Joel, foretelling the outpouring of the Spirit.

We discussed the transformation of Peter, who, after being filled with the Holy Spirit, boldly preached to the masses, resulting in the conversion of 3,000 souls. This illustrates the power of the Holy Spirit to change lives and empower believers to be effective witnesses for Christ. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not just a historical event but a present reality for all believers, offering a deeper connection with God and the ability to communicate with Him through a spiritual language.

We also addressed the skepticism surrounding speaking in tongues, emphasizing that it is a gift from God meant to enhance our spiritual lives. The Holy Spirit's role is to empower us to live out our faith boldly and effectively, just as it did for the early church. As we continue to explore this topic, we are reminded that the promise of the Holy Spirit is for all who believe, offering us the power to be witnesses for Christ in our daily lives.

Key Takeaways:

- God's Provision and Care: We are reminded of God's unwavering provision and care for us, as He clothes the grass of the field and feeds the birds of the air. Devotional

Day 1: Trusting in God's Provision
God's provision and care are evident in the natural world, as He clothes the grass of the field and feeds the birds of the air. This serves as a reminder that our trust and faith should be firmly rooted in His kingdom. As we bring our tithes and offerings, we participate in the divine cycle of sowing and reaping, furthering God's kingdom on earth. This act of giving is not just a financial transaction but a spiritual practice that aligns our hearts with God's purposes. By trusting in His provision, we acknowledge that everything we have comes from Him and that He is faithful to meet our needs. [00:00]

Matthew 6:26-30 (ESV): "Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these."

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you struggle to trust in God's provision? How can you actively choose to trust Him more in this area today?

Day 2: The Promise of the Holy Spirit
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a promise that was prophesied in the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New Testament. It is a gift for all believers, offering a deeper connection with God and the power to be effective witnesses for Christ. This promise is not just a historical event but a present reality for all who believe. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live out our faith boldly and effectively, just as it did for the early church. By embracing this promise, we open ourselves to a transformative relationship with God that equips us for His work. [43:56]

Joel 2:28-29 (ESV): "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit."

Reflection: How can you invite the Holy Spirit to work more powerfully in your life today? What steps can you take to be more open to His guidance and empowerment?

Day 3: Transformation Through the Holy Spirit
The transformation of Peter, who boldly preached to the masses after being filled with the Holy Spirit, illustrates the power of the Holy Spirit to change lives. This same power is available to us today, enabling us to live out our faith boldly and effectively. The Holy Spirit equips us with the courage and strength needed to overcome our fears and doubts, allowing us to be effective witnesses for Christ. By relying on the Holy Spirit, we can experience a profound transformation that impacts not only our lives but also the lives of those around us. [48:37]

Acts 4:13 (ESV): "Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus."

Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need the Holy Spirit's transformative power? How can you invite Him to bring about change in these areas today?

Day 4: Embracing the Gift of Speaking in Tongues
Speaking in tongues is a gift from God meant to enhance our spiritual lives. It is a way to communicate with God through a spiritual language, offering a deeper connection with Him. This gift is not something to be feared or dismissed but embraced as a part of our spiritual journey. By being open to this gift, we allow the Holy Spirit to work in us in new and powerful ways, enriching our prayer life and deepening our relationship with God. [55:05]

1 Corinthians 14:2 (ESV): "For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit."

Reflection: How do you feel about the gift of speaking in tongues? Are there any fears or misconceptions you need to address to be more open to this gift?

Day 5: Empowerment for Witnessing
The Holy Spirit empowers us to be witnesses for Christ in our daily lives. Just as the early church was empowered to spread the gospel throughout the world, we too are called to share the love and message of Christ with those around us. The Holy Spirit equips us with the boldness and power needed to fulfill this calling. By relying on the Holy Spirit, we can overcome our fears and insecurities, allowing us to be effective witnesses for Christ in our communities and beyond. [01:20:52]

Acts 1:8 (ESV): "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

Quotes

"Father, we thank you, Lord. You are so good to us. Lord, your mercy is brand new every morning. We're so thankful, Father, that not only did you save us, Father, Lord, so that we would have eternal life, Lord, but you also said in your Word you made provision for us while we're here, Lord. You said that if the grass of the field, you clothe them with such beauty, and they're here today and gone tomorrow, and the birds of the air, they don't ever have to worry about what they're going to eat or anything like that or how they're clothed. I thank you, Father. You said, how much more would you take care of us? So I thank you, Lord. We put our hope and our trust and our faith in the kingdom of God." [00:36:16] (37 seconds)

"And to discover the truth and the things that God wants to get to us. And so, but, you know, it's always kind of funny. Some of the messages that I think, well, I don't know how it was received. If it was, if it wasn't, I've had more people come to me and tell me how much this has helped them. So, um, I still got, uh, maybe a couple of more, uh, this week, maybe one more week about it, but, um, you know, I want to start, uh, this morning, uh, in Acts, the first chapter, we're going to read verse eight and we're going to kind of go from there. We're going to be talking about, uh, the four different types of baptisms that are listed, uh, in the Bible and Acts, the first chapter, verse eight, Jesus said, you shall receive power when the Holy spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem and all of Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." [00:41:05] (51 seconds)

"It was a promise that had been prophesied even throughout the Old Testament. You don't hear a lot about the baptism of the Holy Spirit coming from the Old Testament, but there was a lot of prophecy leading up to that. But Isaiah 28, you can write these down if I'm going a little bit too fast, but we've had a lot to get through. Isaiah 28, 11 through 12, or 11 and 12 say this, For with stammering lips and another tongue, He will speak to this people, to whom He said, This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest, and this is the refreshing. And I love that because when I first saw that, I thought, You know, it's right. When you're praying in the Holy Spirit or when you're speaking to God in the Holy Spirit, it is rest and it is refreshing." [00:45:40] (43 seconds)

"So the true evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit was visible immediately in the life of the Apostle Peter. I want you to think about this. And we'll read here in just a minute. But I want you to think about who Peter was before this day. So Peter, you know, Jesus loved Peter, had to love Peter. He was probably one of those guys that you just, you don't know why you love him, but you just love him. But he's always messing up and always saying the wrong thing. Anybody got people in your life like that always saying the wrong thing? Always say, but you just love him, you know. Always jumping out in front of you, and that's what Peter was. But more than that, if we go back to the day that Jesus was crucified, Peter denied Christ three times before the chickens even got up. Right? He says, before the rooster crows, you're going to deny me three times. And Peter couldn't even believe that Jesus would say that because he thought he knew himself." [00:47:45] (56 seconds)

"And so, when they got filled with the Holy Spirit, they said there was cloven tongues as a fire. And everybody I know, some of you guys are probably like, man, I am never coming back to this church. I'm looking for the door right now. Listen, I'm just, I'm talking about stuff that's in the Bible. Right? I mean, are we supposed to cherry pick stuff? It was a major event. I mean, if you knew you were dying this afternoon, and you were leaving, would you tell your kids and the people closest to you some stupid joke or something? Or would you tell them something that was of utmost importance to you?" [00:50:54] (36 seconds)

"It wasn't a parlor trick. It wasn't just to have a hot service and to say, we're rowdy and rambunctious down there at the church. No, it was power to be a witness in your life. There's many different benefits that are personal benefits. But this was for the Holy Spirit, the same Holy Spirit that was working in and through Jesus to do miracles and signs and wonders and to win people to him. The same Holy Spirit that was doing that through him. He prayed that the Father would send the promise of the Holy Spirit, that same Holy Spirit, on the inside of every person that would believe on his name." [00:52:07] (37 seconds)

"And Peter himself says, but this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel. So you don't have to wonder what this was, what was going on, because Peter says it. You say, what if Peter was wrong? Well, if you're saying Peter is wrong, then you're saying the Bible is not perfect. And that's a whole together different problem for you that I'm not willing to say. Peter said this, these are not drunk as you suppose, but this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel." [00:55:05] (39 seconds)

"And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I'll pour out my spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions. And your old men shall dream dreams, and all my menservants and all my maidservants. I will pour out my spirit in those days, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and in the signs and the earth beneath. Blood and fire and vapor of smoke, the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood before the coming of the great and the awesome day of the Lord. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." [00:55:50] (32 seconds)

"Peter comes out, and I'm just going to tell you right now, naturally you come out, and everybody's acting crazy, and they're mocking you. The last thing I want to do is stand up and hope. Let me explain some things, guys. But not only does he explain some things, he goes into preaching. What is that? That's the proof that the Holy Spirit came upon him, and he began to have power to be a witness to the name of Jesus. Amen?" [00:56:38] (25 seconds)

"Peter spoke of the events that took place in the home of Cornelius. This is what he said, Acts 11 .16. It says, Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit. I love the story of Cornelius' house because Cornelius was where the Holy Spirit was poured out on Gentiles. And that's important because without Cornelius, well, I'm sure God would have found somebody, but the Bible says that God was reviewing, and Cornelius was found as a man that gave and he prayed." [01:06:21] (43 seconds)

"Acts 2, 38 and 39 say this, repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sin, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit for the promise is unto you, unto your children, all that are far off, even as many as the Lord shall call. The Amplified Version of that says, and Peter answered them, repent, change your views and purpose to accept the will of God and your inner selves indeed, instead of rejecting it, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and release from your sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit for the promise of the Holy Spirit is to you and to your children and to all that are far away, even to and for as many as the Lord God invites and bids to come to himself."
