What can wash away our sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. This truth is the foundation for understanding that, no matter our past mistakes or present struggles, God’s grace is sufficient to lift us up and empower us for His purpose. Today, we looked at the story of Ebed-Melek in Jeremiah 38—a man whose name is rarely mentioned, yet whose courage and obedience changed the course of a prophet’s life. When the king was powerless and the prophet was stuck in the mud, God raised up someone unexpected, someone overlooked, to be the answer in a moment of crisis. Ebed-Melek, a Cushite and an outsider, was positioned by God to act when others would not.
This is a reminder that God often uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Too often, we wait for someone else to step up, thinking we are unqualified or unseen. But God has placed something unique inside each of us. The frustrations, anxieties, and burdens we carry may actually be invitations from God to rise up and be the change we long to see. Our purpose is not diminished by our circumstances, our background, or our lack of recognition. In fact, God delights in using those who feel disqualified, those who have been through the mud themselves, to bring deliverance and hope to others.
Ebed-Melek’s story teaches us that we are not only qualified by God, but also quantified—meaning, when we step out in faith, we do not go alone. God surrounds us with unseen support, with angels, with grace, with favor. And He gives us creativity to use what we have, even if it’s just rags from under the treasury, to accomplish His will. The call is clear: stop waiting for someone else to do what God has placed in your hands. You are the next one up. You are here on purpose, with purpose, and God is ready to use you right where you are. Let us not be content to remain spectators, but let us step forward, knowing that God has already equipped and anointed us for the work ahead.
Jeremiah 38:5-13 (ESV) — 5 King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your hands, for the king can do nothing against you.”
6 So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, which was in the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down by ropes. And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.
7 When Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern—the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate—
8 Ebed-melech went from the king’s house and said to the king,
9 “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern, and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city.”
10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech, the Ethiopian, “Take thirty men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”
11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the house of the king, to a wardrobe in the storehouse, and took from there old rags and worn-out clothes, which he let down to Jeremiah in the cistern by ropes.
12 Then Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put the rags and clothes between your armpits and the ropes.” Jeremiah did so.
13 Then they drew Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.
