Emotional Healing: Finding Freedom Through Forgiveness

Summary

### Summary

Today, we focused on the importance of emotional healing, a topic that has become very near and dear to my heart. We began by acknowledging the significant role fathers play in our lives and prayed for their strength and guidance. We then delved into the subject of emotional wounds and how they can hold us in bondage if left untreated. Drawing from personal experiences and biblical passages, we explored how Jesus came to heal our broken hearts and liberate us from emotional bruises.

We examined Luke 4:16-21, where Jesus outlines His mission, which includes healing the brokenhearted and setting the oppressed free. This passage reveals five foundational ministries of Jesus: salvation, spirit baptism, physical healing, deliverance, and emotional healing. We focused on the last two, emphasizing that untreated emotional wounds can manifest in various ways, such as anger, insecurity, pride, independence, touchiness, shyness, and a need to control or manipulate.

We discussed how these manifestations are often rooted in a spirit of rejection and how they can become strongholds in our lives. Jesus, however, offers a path to healing and freedom. We also touched on the importance of forgiveness, as holding onto grudges can give the enemy a foothold in our lives. Matthew 18:21-35 served as a reminder that we must forgive others as Jesus has forgiven us, lest we be handed over to tormentors.

In the final part of our service, we invited the Holy Spirit to bring to mind any memories that need healing. We prayed collectively for emotional healing, breaking the chains of insecurity, fear, anger, bitterness, and other negative emotions. We concluded by inviting those who need further prayer or have never called upon Jesus as their Savior to come forward for personal ministry.

### Key Takeaways

1. The Role of Fathers: Fathers play a crucial role not only in their immediate families but also in the house of the Lord. Their sacrifices, love, and commitment to Christ are invaluable. We must continually pray for their strength, guidance, and peace, especially in areas where they feel lacking or insecure. [01:15]

2. Emotional Wounds and Bondage: Emotional wounds, if left untreated, can hold us in bondage. These wounds often manifest in various ways, such as anger, insecurity, and a need to control. Ignoring these wounds is like stuffing emotions into a pressure cooker, which eventually explodes, causing more harm. Jesus offers a path to healing these deep-seated emotional scars. [05:44]

3. Five Ministries of Jesus: Jesus' mission includes five foundational ministries: salvation, spirit baptism, physical healing, deliverance, and emotional healing. Each of these aspects is crucial for a holistic Christian life. Emotional healing, in particular, is essential for overcoming the deep bruises and brokenness that life often brings. [08:39]

4. The Importance of Forgiveness: Unforgiveness can become a stronghold that allows the enemy to torment us. Jesus teaches us to forgive not just seven times but seventy times seven, emphasizing the importance of continual forgiveness. Holding onto grudges can lead to spiritual and emotional torment, but forgiveness brings freedom and healing. [29:52]

5. Holy Spirit's Role in Healing: Inviting the Holy Spirit to bring to mind memories that need healing is a powerful step towards emotional freedom. As we submit these memories to the Lord, He heals the associated pain and breaks the chains of negative emotions. This process involves forgiving others and sometimes even ourselves, allowing Jesus to heal our broken hearts and set us free. [43:14]

### Bible Reading
1. Luke 4:16-21: "He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 'The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.' Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, 'Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.'"

2. Matthew 18:21-35: "Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, 'Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?' Jesus answered, 'I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. At this the servant fell on his knees before him. "Be patient with me," he begged, "and I will pay back everything." The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. "Pay back what you owe me!" he demanded. His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, "Be patient with me, and I will pay it back." But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened. Then the master called the servant in. "You wicked servant," he said, "I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?" In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.'"

Devotional

Day 1: The Role of Fathers
Fathers play a crucial role not only in their immediate families but also in the house of the Lord. Their sacrifices, love, and commitment to Christ are invaluable. We must continually pray for their strength, guidance, and peace, especially in areas where they feel lacking or insecure. Fathers often carry the weight of providing and protecting their families, and this responsibility can sometimes lead to feelings of inadequacy or stress. By lifting them up in prayer, we support them in their God-given roles and encourage them to lean on God's strength rather than their own.

In the church, fathers also serve as spiritual leaders and role models. Their faith and dedication can inspire others to grow in their relationship with Christ. As a community, we should honor and support the fathers among us, recognizing the unique challenges they face and the significant impact they have on the spiritual health of their families and the church body. [01:15]

Ephesians 6:4 (ESV): "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."

Reflection: How can you support and pray for the fathers in your life and community today?

Day 2: Emotional Wounds and Bondage
Emotional wounds, if left untreated, can hold us in bondage. These wounds often manifest in various ways, such as anger, insecurity, and a need to control. Ignoring these wounds is like stuffing emotions into a pressure cooker, which eventually explodes, causing more harm. Jesus offers a path to healing these deep-seated emotional scars. When we allow Jesus to address our emotional wounds, we open ourselves to His healing power and the freedom that comes with it.

These emotional wounds can stem from various sources, including past traumas, rejection, or unmet expectations. They can create strongholds in our lives, leading to behaviors and attitudes that are not aligned with God's will. By acknowledging these wounds and seeking Jesus' healing, we can break free from the chains that bind us and experience true emotional and spiritual freedom. [05:44]

Psalm 147:3 (ESV): "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

Reflection: What emotional wounds are you carrying that need Jesus' healing touch today?

Day 3: Five Ministries of Jesus
Jesus' mission includes five foundational ministries: salvation, spirit baptism, physical healing, deliverance, and emotional healing. Each of these aspects is crucial for a holistic Christian life. Emotional healing, in particular, is essential for overcoming the deep bruises and brokenness that life often brings. Jesus' ministry to heal the brokenhearted and set the oppressed free is a testament to His compassion and desire for our wholeness.

Understanding these five ministries helps us appreciate the comprehensive nature of Jesus' work in our lives. He not only saves us from sin but also empowers us with His Spirit, heals our physical bodies, delivers us from spiritual oppression, and mends our emotional wounds. Embracing all aspects of Jesus' ministry allows us to live a more abundant and victorious Christian life. [08:39]

Isaiah 61:1 (ESV): "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound."

Reflection: Which of the five ministries of Jesus do you need to experience more fully in your life right now?

Day 4: The Importance of Forgiveness
Unforgiveness can become a stronghold that allows the enemy to torment us. Jesus teaches us to forgive not just seven times but seventy times seven, emphasizing the importance of continual forgiveness. Holding onto grudges can lead to spiritual and emotional torment, but forgiveness brings freedom and healing. When we forgive others, we release the hold that bitterness and resentment have on our hearts, allowing God's peace to fill us.

Forgiveness is not always easy, especially when the wounds are deep. However, it is a command from Jesus and a necessary step for our own healing. By choosing to forgive, we align ourselves with God's will and open the door for His healing and restoration in our lives. Forgiveness is a powerful act of obedience that breaks the chains of the enemy and sets us free. [29:52]

Colossians 3:13 (ESV): "Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive."

Reflection: Think of someone in your life you need to forgive. Can you ask God to help you begin to extend His love and forgiveness to them today?

Day 5: Holy Spirit's Role in Healing
Inviting the Holy Spirit to bring to mind memories that need healing is a powerful step towards emotional freedom. As we submit these memories to the Lord, He heals the associated pain and breaks the chains of negative emotions. This process involves forgiving others and sometimes even ourselves, allowing Jesus to heal our broken hearts and set us free. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter and Guide, leading us into all truth and helping us experience the fullness of God's healing.

By allowing the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts, we can uncover hidden wounds and receive the healing that only God can provide. This requires a willingness to be vulnerable and open to the Holy Spirit's leading. As we trust Him with our pain, He brings restoration and wholeness, enabling us to live in the freedom and joy that Jesus offers. [43:14]

John 14:26 (ESV): "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you."

Reflection: What memories or emotions do you need to submit to the Holy Spirit for healing today?

### Quotes for Outreach

1. "Jesus wants to heal your broken and your shattered heart. And so, I want to ask you a question. Has anybody in here ever been broken? Has anybody in here ever been shattered? I mean, I bet all of us have. I don't think there's anybody in here like, nope, not me. I mean, if you've been in this earth, something has broken or shattered you. And guys, that's okay. I understand. Here's the good news. Jesus can heal that brokenness. He can put every single piece back together and you do not have to live a broken and shattered life. And that is some good news." 2. "Life is difficult. Our hearts can become broken for a lot of different reasons. You know, all of you raised your hand and if we had the time, all of you could probably give me a different reason on why your heart was broken. Maybe a parent disappointed you. Maybe you were ditched by a boyfriend or a girlfriend or maybe you didn't get the job that you wanted. You know, maybe someone close to you dies and passed. No matter what the specific reason for our broken heart, usually the root cause is broken. The root cause is a great loss or disappointment. Usually it's a great loss or a disappointment. We feel hurt. We feel scorned. We feel forgotten. We feel crushed or we feel rejected." (44 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

3. "Jesus never promises us a pain-free life, right? We see that in James 16, 33. So if you're seeking that, you're not going to find it because we're told that sufferings are going to come. Sorrows and tribulations. Tribulations will come to us. And let me tell you this. When they do, it's not wrong to grieve. It's not wrong to lament or feel lost. We see that Jesus responded with weeping in John 11, 35. That is a natural and healthy way to respond to things. But the Bible does tell us a healthy way to grieve by showing us what not to do, right?" (32 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

4. "Jesus works to what? Heal the brokenhearted. And to set at liberty those that are bruised. And so that takes me into point number two. Jesus came to liberate the bruised. And so let's talk about bruises for a moment. Now, a physical bruise. A physical bruise is actually caused by inward bleeding, right? A person's skin gets hit by something, and you don't immediately see a bruise, right? But on the inside, I may get this wrong, but what all the capillaries or something in there kind of bust. And so within a day or two, it comes to the surface and you see the bruise, right? So a person, it happens on the inside, and then you see it on the outside." (44 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

5. "Jesus wants to set us free from that. This means that a bruise can hold us in bondage. If Jesus said, I came to set people free that have been oppressed and bruised and crushed, that means that a bruise can hold you in bondage. And so the word crushed right there, actually, this word actually means crushed. It's another bruise. We can actually look at it as crushed. You know, a while ago, I asked if any of you had ever had your heart broken. Now, let me ask you this. Has anybody ever been crushed? Because I think it's a little bit different. To me, sometimes it's a little bit more tragic in a different way." (32 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

### Quotes for Members

1. "We can't grieve as if there's no hope because Jesus is our hope. And then when you go on to verse 18, it says, We are to sorrow as those who do have hope and also to comfort each other in our pain. And so, guys, it's okay to grieve. But we as believers also need to bring comfort in those situations. And so, guys, great problems can arise if we do not grieve in a biblical manner. Anybody ever experience that? You know, I said, There's also the extreme of that, of going off the handle, right? And usually some good doesn't come from that either. It's just a moment of explosion, and there's not a balance. There's not healing. It's not really doing it biblically." (41 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

2. "If we let our hearts go untreated by Jesus, if we hold on to grudges or feelings of being rejected, if we see our hearts as untreatable, then these all become footholds for the enemy to influence our lives. And so, guys, treated hurt and feelings of rejection can easily enslave a person and keep him or her in bondage. Amen? Amen. And so we are actually going to talk about seven strongholds from rejection, or another way of looking at it is seven ways that an untreated wound can manifest itself. So are you ready? And, guys, I believe as we go through some of these, some of you are going to say, Ouch. But that's the Holy Spirit bringing conviction. All right? I think all of us have responded in some way with some of these." (50 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

3. "Guys, when a person is being harassed by the spirit of rejection, he or she can exhibit that influence by either being a petty dictator or a champion manipulator. And so when you have a spirit of rejection, you're very susceptible to being a manipulator because you have to control the people around you and control their responses so that they don't reject you because you want to be accepted by them. You know, it really boils down to you're so hurt. You're so hurt because you have been rejected and you have been rejected in the past that you want to control them so that they don't reject you in the future." 4. "If you're not going to forgive someone, it is very possible that he's going to allow you to be tormented until you do. Because otherwise you're going to live a miserable life. Has anybody ever held on to unforgiveness? Does it ever go well with you? No, you're always thinking they did me wrong. They did me wrong. They did me wrong. How dare they do this? And like, you get so consumed with this misjustice that you're not looking to the father. You're getting consumed in this. And he's like, let it go. Go and let me assist you. Let me help you. He wants you to say, I don't want to live this way. He wants you to come back to him." (37 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

5. "The reason why I'm saying this is that you have to understand is that you can't be delivered until you repent. Right here in James 4, 7, it says, Therefore submit to God, resist the devil, and he will, what? Flee from you. Okay, the order is important here. What do we have to do first? Submit to God. You can't resist the devil if you haven't submitted to God. So you have to submit to him first so that then you're able to resist the devil. In 2 Corinthians, Paul says, he's talking, he says, Forgive him now, forgive him, receive him back into the family. And here's what he says in verse 10. He says, Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ."
