Embracing Vision: A Journey of Faith and Service
Summary
### Summary
Today, we gathered to celebrate not only Shiloh's 59th anniversary but also Pastor Melinda's 50th birthday. This season is significant as we reflect on our journey and look forward to the future with fresh vision. Vision is crucial for direction, and without it, we risk going off course. Our mission at Shiloh has always been to build a church that draws all nations to Jesus, emphasizing the importance of both discipleship and evangelism. We are guided by eight core values: God's presence, Jesus as our message, people as our heart, generosity, excellence, servant leadership, honor, and passion.
Vision season is a time to clarify where we are heading. Vision brings direction and sets boundaries, helping us to stay focused on our mission. We need to climb higher, like Habakkuk, to get God's perspective. This involves prayer and wrestling with God to understand His vision for our lives and our church. Vision transforms frustration into passion, and it is essential for every aspect of our lives, including our marriages, businesses, and families.
We are committed to being a church that serves both locally and globally. Our mission extends beyond Oakland to nations like Ethiopia, China, and Mexico. We believe in being good stewards, and our financial transparency reflects our commitment to ministry. Formation is another key aspect, as we aim to equip the saints and help people grow in their walk with the Lord through community and discipleship.
Foundationally, we want everyone to be connected and take the next steps in their faith journey. This includes being saved, baptized, and becoming part of a community. We encourage everyone to join Team Shiloh and serve as servant leaders. Our goal is 100% participation in our mission, and we believe that through obedience and generosity, we can accelerate the vision God has for us.
Vision requires patience and waiting on God. Even when we don't see immediate results, we must trust that God's timing is perfect. As we wait, we gain strength and clarity, enabling us to run and soar in His purpose. This season is about more than just buildings; it's about people finding their place and belonging in God's plan.

Devotional
Day 1: Vision Brings Direction
Vision is essential for setting boundaries and providing direction in our lives. Without it, we risk going off course and ending up in places we never intended to be. Vision helps us stay focused on our mission and purpose, guiding us through life's challenges and uncertainties. It acts as a compass, ensuring that we remain aligned with God's will and purpose for our lives. When we have a clear vision, we can navigate through difficulties with a sense of purpose and determination.
In our personal lives, vision can help us set goals and make decisions that align with our values and beliefs. It can guide us in our relationships, careers, and spiritual growth. As a church, having a clear vision helps us stay united and focused on our mission to draw all nations to Jesus. It ensures that our efforts and resources are directed towards fulfilling God's purpose for our community. [01:04:35]
Habakkuk 2:2-3 (ESV): "And the Lord answered me: 'Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.'"
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you feel directionless or uncertain? How can you seek God's vision to bring clarity and purpose to that area today?
Day 2: Climbing Higher for God's Perspective
Like Habakkuk, we need to climb higher to get God's perspective. This involves prayer and wrestling with God to understand His vision for our lives. When we seek God's vision, we gain a higher perspective, seeing things as He sees them, which transforms our frustration into passion. Climbing higher means taking the time to connect with God, to listen to His voice, and to seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives.
This process requires intentionality and dedication. It may involve setting aside time for prayer, fasting, and studying the Word of God. As we draw closer to God, He reveals His plans and purposes for us, giving us a renewed sense of passion and direction. By gaining God's perspective, we can navigate through life's challenges with a sense of peace and confidence, knowing that He is in control. [01:11:54]
Isaiah 55:8-9 (ESV): "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."
Reflection: What steps can you take this week to climb higher and seek God's perspective in your life? How can you make time for intentional prayer and reflection?
Day 3: Serving Locally and Globally
Our mission at Shiloh extends beyond our local community to the nations. We are committed to serving both locally and globally, believing that as we love and serve our city and the world, God will bring about transformation. This global mindset is a key part of our identity and mission. Serving others is a tangible expression of God's love and compassion, and it allows us to be His hands and feet in the world.
Locally, we can make a difference by reaching out to our neighbors, volunteering in community projects, and supporting local ministries. Globally, we can participate in mission trips, support international ministries, and pray for the needs of other nations. By serving both locally and globally, we fulfill the Great Commission and demonstrate the love of Christ to a hurting world. [01:32:29]
Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV): "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
Reflection: How can you actively participate in serving both locally and globally? What specific actions can you take to demonstrate God's love to those around you and to the nations?
Day 4: Formation and Equipping the Saints
We aim to equip the saints and help people grow in their walk with the Lord through community and discipleship. This involves transforming our minds through the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. We believe in creating spaces where the Holy Spirit can move and operate, leading to transformed lives. Formation is a continuous process of becoming more like Christ, and it requires intentional effort and commitment.
Through community and discipleship, we can support and encourage one another in our spiritual journeys. Small groups, Bible studies, and mentorship programs are valuable tools for growth and accountability. As we invest in our spiritual formation, we become better equipped to fulfill God's purposes and to serve others effectively. [01:37:03]
Ephesians 4:11-13 (ESV): "And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ."
Reflection: What steps can you take to invest in your spiritual formation and growth? How can you engage in community and discipleship to support your journey?
Day 5: Patience and Waiting on God
Vision requires patience and waiting on God. Even when we don't see immediate results, we must trust that God's timing is perfect. As we wait, we gain strength and clarity, enabling us to run and soar in His purpose. This season is about trusting God's process and timing in our lives. Waiting on God can be challenging, but it is an essential part of our spiritual growth and development.
During times of waiting, we can draw closer to God through prayer, worship, and studying His Word. We can also seek encouragement and support from our faith community. By trusting in God's timing, we learn to rely on His wisdom and sovereignty, knowing that He has a perfect plan for our lives. Patience in waiting allows us to develop a deeper relationship with God and to grow in faith and character. [01:45:03]
Isaiah 40:31 (ESV): "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
Reflection: In what areas of your life are you struggling to wait on God's timing? How can you cultivate patience and trust in His perfect plan for you?
Quotes
1. "Shiloh is a church that's unashamed about going after the loss. And I know right now in the church, if you read books and watch podcasts, there's a big push on discipleship. And I believe that's good. I agree, we need discipleship. As long as we do not use that as an excuse to never go after new people. To never go after the loss. Where we become so discipleship focused and not the loss focused that we create a culture where people that are far from the Lord or brand new to faith feel excluded from Jesus." [01:02:08] (41 seconds)
2. "We are not a self-help church. We are a savior help church. People are our heart. You can belong here. You can be a part of here well before you belong. Even before you believe, you are welcome here. We will share the gospel unashamedly. All people, all people need to hear the good news of Jesus Christ. Generosity is our privilege. Excellence is our spirit. Servant leadership is our identity. And honor is our calling." [01:03:15] (34 seconds)
3. "Vision creates direction. Without direction, without vision, we are off course. Several years ago when we were working with the kids, we were going to do a camp in Mission Springs when we used to do our family camp. And we were all packed up. And Pastor Melinda and I had a few people on the team with us. But we had all the gear. We had a huge SOE. We had UV in those days. We had a trailer. And we had all the gear for the summer camp. And we get into our vehicle. And we're having a great time. We're laughing. We're having a great time. And next thing you know, we ended up in Monterey." [01:04:35] (40 seconds)
4. "Vision helps you go further, faster. And as we give, even the rest of this year, I encourage you, start to pray, God, what would you have me give? Lord, give me the opportunity to be a part of what you're doing. Remember what Habakkuk said. We need to climb the tower and write it down. How many of you say, I commit to moving forward? I commit to moving forward in Jesus. How many of you say, I'm not staying where I'm at? I might look cute now, but I know God's got cuter for me in the days to come." [01:43:59] (40 seconds)
5. "See, vision rarely requires immediate action, but it always requires patience. See, most of you don't have a vision problem. You have a patience problem. You don't lack vision. You lack patience. But when we see clarity from God, what we learn is to be patient. This woman right here, she's helped me learn to be patient. I appreciate her. She's learned me how to go to God and wait on the Lord. Our prayer needs to be, Lord Jesus, give me clarity. Help me to be more patient. Help me to produce more confidence and security in me, in who you are." [01:45:03] (48 seconds)
6. "And I want to encourage you. You know, it's been an interesting season, just some of the questions men have been asking me specifically. And I had somebody recently ask me, how do I not grow weary in well-doing? You know, and I hear about burnout and people walking away from Jesus. You want to know why I don't walk away from Jesus? It's because every day, say it, every day, every day I spend time in God's Word. Every day I need a Word from God. Every day before I take my multivitamin, I need the multivitamin of God's Word." [01:18:44] (36 seconds)
7. "And I believe if we firmly want to get God's perspective, you're gonna have to go higher. Tell your neighbor, you ready to go higher? You're gonna have to climb the tower. You're gonna have to spend time in prayer. You know Habakkuk, that word means to wrestle. If you're gonna get God's vision, let me tell you, you better know how to fight. Ask your neighbor, you know how to fight? Tell him to show you their fist. You got some bruises on there? You got some cuts on there? You better know how to fight. Everything in this world is trying to steal the vision God has placed in your life." [01:11:54] (40 seconds)
8. "And I want to tell you what I see today is beautiful. Because it's not just a glimpse of what God has shown us on paper, but it's a glimpse of what God has shown us in the secret place, in that place of prayer. It's in His presence that we catch a glimpse of where He is leading us. And I want to encourage you. You know, it's been an interesting season, just some of the questions men have been asking me specifically." [01:17:59] (37 seconds)
9. "And I believe during this vision season, during this time, God's preparing us. He's changing us. And even as I've been preparing for what God wants to say right now, I want you to know that my life with Jesus is number one. It's my life. The body of Christ is number one. There's my relationship with God and my being a part of the body of Christ. The Bible says it's when we're grafted in, it's when we're connected that life flows. He says, abide. Abide. Abide in the vine more than 15 times in John 14. He says, abide. Tell your neighbor, abide." [01:26:11] (44 seconds)
10. "And I want to encourage you to take it to God. Go to Him. Recognize that God can transform that frustration. He can create passion for vision. You know a lot of what you see at Shiloh today. It stemmed out of frustration. Of us wanting to go deeper. Of us desiring to have a place where everyone can encounter God's presence. I've been to that church where they yell at you on the way in. Or they ignore you. I've been to that place where you wonder, are Christians nice? We want a place where people will encounter God." [01:15:18] (42 seconds)
