Embracing Unity Through Christ's Example of Humility
Devotional
Day 1: Embracing Christ's Humility
In Romans 15, Paul emphasizes the importance of following Christ's example of humility and selflessness. Jesus, though divine, chose to humble Himself by taking on human form to serve and save humanity. This act of humility is a profound model for how we should interact with others, especially in matters of personal conviction that do not pertain to salvation. By prioritizing others' needs above our own, we reflect Christ's love and humility, fostering a community that values unity and mutual edification. This call to humility challenges us to set aside our own desires and freedoms for the sake of others, embodying the selfless love of Christ. [13:10]
Philippians 2:3-4 (ESV): "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."
Reflection: Think of a situation where you can prioritize someone else's needs over your own today. How can you demonstrate Christ-like humility in that situation?
Day 2: Unity Through Diversity
The early church faced divisions over cultural practices, yet Paul urged believers to focus on what unites them—faith in Christ. Differences in cultural norms and personal convictions should not divide us but rather enrich our community as we learn to love and accept one another as Christ accepted us. This unity in diversity is a testament to the transformative power of the Gospel, as it calls us to embrace our differences and glorify God with one voice. By focusing on our shared faith, we can build a harmonious community that reflects the love and unity of Christ. [18:35]
1 Corinthians 12:12-13 (ESV): "For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit."
Reflection: Identify a difference you have with someone in your church community. How can you focus on your shared faith to strengthen your relationship with them today?
Day 3: Supporting the Weaker Brother
Paul's message in Romans 15 calls those strong in faith to support those who struggle with certain issues. This means sometimes setting aside personal freedoms for the sake of another's spiritual well-being, embodying the love and patience of Christ. By prioritizing the spiritual growth of others, we create an environment where everyone can thrive in their faith journey. This selfless act of love and support reflects the heart of Christ, who always sought to uplift and encourage those around Him. [09:20]
Galatians 6:1-2 (ESV): "Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."
Reflection: Consider someone in your life who may be struggling with their faith. What is one practical way you can support and encourage them this week?
Day 4: The Encouragement of Scripture
The Bible provides examples and encouragement for living a life that honors God. By studying Scripture, we gain the endurance and hope needed to maintain unity and love within the church, despite our differences. Scripture serves as a guide and source of strength, helping us navigate the challenges of life and fostering a community that reflects the love and unity of Christ. As we immerse ourselves in God's Word, we are equipped to build each other up and glorify God with one voice. [19:41]
Romans 15:4 (ESV): "For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope."
Reflection: Choose a passage of Scripture to meditate on today. How can this passage encourage you to promote unity and love within your church community?
Day 5: The Power of a Unified Church
A church united under Christ's lordship is a powerful witness to the world. By embracing our differences and focusing on our shared faith, we can glorify God with one voice, offering a compelling testimony of the Gospel's transformative power. This unity is not about uniformity but about coming together to reflect the love and grace of Christ. As we strive for harmony and mutual edification, we demonstrate to the world the beauty and strength of a community rooted in Christ's love. [26:22]
Ephesians 4:3-6 (ESV): "Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."
Reflection: Reflect on how your actions contribute to the unity of your church. What is one step you can take today to strengthen the bond of peace within your community?
Sermon Summary
In today's message, we explored the profound example set by Jesus Christ and how it guides us in navigating disputes and divisions within the church. The focus was on Romans 15, where Paul addresses a conflict in the early church regarding dietary laws and days of worship. This division was not about sin but cultural norms and personal convictions. Paul identifies himself as one of the "strong" and urges those who are strong in faith to support those who are weaker, emphasizing the importance of unity and mutual edification.
The core of the message is the call to follow Christ's example of selflessness and humility. Jesus, who was in the form of God, did not cling to His divine privileges but emptied Himself, taking on human form to serve and save humanity. This ultimate act of humility and sacrifice is the model for how we should treat one another, especially in matters of personal conviction that do not pertain to salvation.
Paul's ethical system, as discussed, is revolutionary: prioritize others above yourself. This means that if a fellow believer struggles with certain practices, those who are stronger in faith should refrain from exercising their freedom in a way that might cause the weaker brother or sister to stumble. The goal is to build each other up, fostering a community that reflects the love and unity of Christ.
The message also highlighted the importance of relying on God's strength and the encouragement of Scripture to maintain unity. The church is called to be a place of harmony, where differences are embraced, and believers are united under the lordship of Christ. This unity is not about uniformity but about glorifying God with one voice, demonstrating to the world the transformative power of the Gospel.

For we who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good to build him up. Now I heard one writer talk about Paul's ethical system and once you get Paul's ethical system it'll rock your world. [00:07:41]
Christ is the ultimate example for us. For Christ did not please himself but as it is written it says in verse three the reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me. Philippians talks about this whole concept of Christ being the example because he was in the form of God and he did not count equality with God something to be grasped. [00:12:37]
The church needs to be the place where it says that we are unified under Christ. He said you're going to need the God of encouragement and endurance and he's going to grant you, give you the ability to live and this word for live is change your mind mindset, change the natural mindset. [00:22:33]
We are in this together as a church. We're all here to help one another and we're all looking out for the other person. We're all saying we're going to do this and what's our example? Christ is the ultimate example for us. For Christ did not please himself but as it is written it says in verse three the reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me. [00:12:37]
The world is looking for something better. They're looking for one voice. They're looking for are you united? You know I look down the road here I look at the Covenant and the Baptist I kind of talk about our line right here that we're connected we are connected in Christ. Do we agree with everything that they do and they agree with everything we do? No. [00:26:22]
The hope of God is written throughout the scriptures. It's there to give you endurance and encouragement for hope so that you can say yeah we can do this, it's possible. Then the next thing he says you know what we're going to need to really rely on God to unify us under Christ. That's the only way it's going to happen. [00:22:33]
We as Believers can unify under the fact that we are followers of Christ. We unify under the fact that we don't agree on everything but we agree on the fact that we are followers of him. We need to look out for the other person when we are struggling uh when somebody is struggling with something make sure that you don't do it in front of them. [00:34:25]
The reason that we need to be united with one another is that we with one voice glorify God. You know what this city does not need us to start fighting with every other church. Well, you know those Baptists I went to a Baptist Seminary I can talk that way you know but I mean I they would I would we would talk you know back and forth. [00:26:22]
We need to welcome one another. The big point is welcome one another as Christ welcomed us. We as Believers can unify under the fact that we are followers of Christ. We unify under the fact that we don't agree on everything but we agree on the fact that we are followers of him. [00:34:25]
