Embracing Unity: The Power of Togetherness in Christ

Summary

In today's gathering, we explored the profound theme of unity, drawing inspiration from Psalm 133, which beautifully illustrates the blessings that flow when God's people live together in harmony. Unity is not just a concept but a powerful force that can transform our lives, marriages, workplaces, and communities. As we step into a new season, it's crucial to recognize the significance of dwelling together in unity, as it is the foundation for thriving in every area of our lives.

The word "dwell" signifies being planted in a specific place, and it is essential to understand that God has called each of us to be where we are for a purpose. Whether it's in our church, our city, our workplace, or our family, there is a divine reason for our presence. Like the Great Basin Bristlecone Pine, which thrives in harsh conditions by staying rooted, we too must remain steadfast in our commitments, allowing God to strengthen and grow us through every season.

Unity is not just about being in the same place but being together in purpose and vision. It requires us to forgive, to let go of past hurts, and to focus on what God wants to achieve through us collectively. When we come together, lifting up the name of Jesus, we create an environment where blessings flow, and lives are transformed. The story of Paul and Silas in prison reminds us of the power of worship and unity, as their collective praise led to miraculous freedom not just for themselves but for all around them.

Moreover, unity brings joy and festivity, much like the anointing oil that symbolizes celebration and life. In a family, church, or workplace that dwells together in unity, there is a sense of joy and purpose that is contagious. It is in this environment that new life is birthed, and people are drawn to the love and hope that emanates from such a community.

As we move forward, let us commit to dwelling together in unity, seeking God's vision for our lives and our communities. By doing so, we will not only experience personal growth and fulfillment but also become a beacon of hope and transformation for those around us.

Devotional

Day 1: The Strength of Being Rooted
In life, being firmly planted in our commitments and callings is akin to a tree that thrives when its roots are deep and secure. This steadfastness is crucial, especially during challenging seasons, as it allows us to grow stronger and bear fruit. Just as the Great Basin Bristlecone Pine thrives in harsh conditions by staying rooted, we too must remain steadfast in our commitments, allowing God to strengthen and grow us through every season. Recognizing that God has placed us where we are for a purpose can transform our perspective, helping us to embrace our current circumstances with faith and resilience. [01:19:17]

Jeremiah 17:7-8 (ESV): "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit."

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you feel God has planted you for a purpose? How can you remain steadfast and trust in His plan for you today?

Day 2: Aligning Hearts for a Shared Vision
Unity in purpose goes beyond mere physical proximity; it involves aligning our hearts and purposes with one another. When we come together with a shared vision, we create an environment where God's blessings can flow abundantly. This unity requires us to forgive, let go of past hurts, and focus on what God wants to achieve through us collectively. By aligning our hearts and purposes, we can work together towards a common goal, maximizing the impact and effectiveness of our efforts. [01:23:35]

Ephesians 4:3-4 (ESV): "Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call."

Reflection: Is there a relationship or situation in your life where you need to align your heart with others for a shared purpose? How can you take a step towards unity today?

Day 3: The Joyful Celebration of Unity
Unity brings joy and festivity, much like the anointing oil in Psalm 133 that symbolizes celebration and life. In a community that dwells together in unity, there is a sense of celebration and life that is both refreshing and contagious. This joy is not just for the individual but spreads throughout the community, drawing others to the love and hope that emanates from such a harmonious environment. When we dwell together in unity, we create a space where new life is birthed, and people are drawn to the love and hope that emanates from such a community. [01:33:52]

Psalm 133:1-2 (ESV): "Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes!"

Reflection: How can you contribute to creating an environment of joy and celebration in your community or family today? What specific action can you take to spread this joy?

Day 4: The Healing Power of Forgiveness
To achieve unity, we must be willing to forgive and let go of past hurts. This healing process allows us to gather together without barriers, fostering an environment where love and growth can flourish. Forgiveness is a powerful tool that breaks down walls and opens the door to reconciliation and unity. By choosing to forgive, we not only free ourselves from the burden of resentment but also pave the way for healing and restoration in our relationships. [01:38:56]

Colossians 3:13 (ESV): "Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive."

Reflection: Think of someone in your life you need to forgive. Can you ask God to help you begin to extend His love and forgiveness to them today?

Day 5: Pursuing a Unified Vision
Whether in a family, church, or workplace, having a unified vision is crucial. It prevents division and ensures that everyone is working towards the same goal, maximizing the impact and effectiveness of our efforts. A unified vision aligns our actions and decisions, allowing us to move forward with purpose and clarity. By seeking God's vision for our lives and our communities, we can become a beacon of hope and transformation for those around us. [01:38:56]

1 Corinthians 1:10 (ESV): "I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment."

Reflection: What is one area in your life where you need to pursue a unified vision with others? How can you contribute to aligning your goals and actions with those around you today?

Quotes

And not just that, it's powerful in our marriages, it's powerful in our workplaces. We need this thing in our life if we're going to thrive because God's will for our life is that we would thrive in every area of our life and there's power in this and so I'm going to share it with you today. [01:15:00]

The meaning of dwell is to live in or at a specified place. See, I believe that God has called us all to be in a certain place. I want to ask you today, do you have a sense that you are called to this church? Do you have a sense in your heart that you are called to Rockhampton for a purpose? [01:16:05]

See, when we dwell in one place, we start to bear fruit. When we choose to dwell in one place, doesn't matter what comes against us, we can thrive through it. There's this tree and it's the oldest tree. It can live. It can live the longest out of any tree and it lives to the year of 5,000 years old. [01:17:04]

It's called the Great Basin Bristlecone Pine. Now, it's old. 5,000, that's old. And it's old because it actually stays in one place through every season. This tree actually grows in harsh conditions. And they say that in seasons when it's especially harsh, they don't even grow. [01:17:29]

And I think that's a great image for us that we need to, regardless of the conditions we're in and the season that we're in, we need to grow. We need to stay planted. We need to choose to dwell in one place. And what that causes us to do is we actually become stronger and we create, and our capacity enlarges and we grow because we choose. [01:18:11]

In our marriages, when things get hard and they get a little bit too tough on us, do we choose to go, you know what, this is too hard, I'm out. Now, I'm not talking about abuse, that's a different story. But you know, just the ups and downs of life and we go through these hardships and we go, you know what, maybe this isn't meant to be. [01:19:47]

And so, you know what, it's not all about me, it's about other people, it's about my wife, it's about my husband, it's not what can I get out of it. All of a sudden, what can be created there is something that will impact generations to come. In my life, I've missed out on everything I've gone for the first time. [01:20:48]

Because sometimes things come and you're not quite ready, but it's God's timing. So, I took it. And I just want to encourage you today. Don't jump places and go places because something looks better. Stay planted and allow God to grow you. Stay in a marriage. Stay in a workplace. [01:24:23]

See, that's the important thing that if we come together and lift up the name of Jesus, if we stay together, if we stay in proximity to each other, there's power in that. I love the story of Paul and Silas in prison. It's one of my favorite stories. And Paul and Silas are in prison for telling people about Jesus. [01:25:11]

And the Bible says that at midday, together, they started to worship God. And all of a sudden, this earthquake came and it shook the place. And the prison doors came open and the chains broke off. But not just on them, all of that took place for all the other prisoners that were in the jail with them. [01:26:15]

In order to gather together we've got to be willing to deal with some stuff in our life we've got to forgive and allow God to help us deal with some of the things where someone might have hurt us in the past and that can stop us from going and going to a life group or connecting in and out of our lives. [01:28:24]

When we become offended and we start to get in on that goat track and come in behind, it causes so much problems for unity in our world. It actually takes the blessing. And so, as we come to a close, I've got 10 minutes to just share the rest of this part. [01:30:15]
