Embracing Truth: The Transformative Journey with Christ
Summary
In this sermon, the focus is on the profound truths found in the Gospel of John, particularly the encounter between Jesus and Nathaniel. The sermon begins by emphasizing the foundational Christian belief that Jesus is the Word made flesh, and through Him, believers receive grace upon grace. Christianity is not merely about morality or religion; it is about a living relationship with the Son of God. This relationship is exemplified in the lives of the apostles, who were ordinary men transformed by the power of Christ.
The sermon highlights the importance of sincerity and honesty in one's spiritual journey, as demonstrated by Nathaniel, whom Jesus praised for his lack of guile. Nathaniel's story teaches us how to evaluate spiritual experiences and reports with discernment, using the Scriptures as a guide. The sermon also underscores the value of religious instruction and knowledge of the Scriptures, which provide a context and background that enrich one's understanding of Christ.
A key lesson from Nathaniel's encounter with Jesus is the importance of accepting and acknowledging the truths we do see, even if we do not understand everything. Nathaniel's confession of Jesus as the Son of God and the King of Israel, based on the limited revelation he received, is a model for believers. This openness to truth leads to greater revelations and deeper understanding.
The sermon concludes with the promise of greater things to come for those who believe. Jesus assures Nathaniel that he will see greater things, symbolized by the vision of angels ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. This promise extends to all believers, encouraging them to grow in their knowledge and experience of Christ. The Christian journey is one of continuous growth, moving from glory to glory, as believers deepen their understanding of Christ's person and work.

Day 1: Transformative Relationship with Christ
Christianity is not about adhering to a set of moral codes or religious rituals; it is about entering into a transformative relationship with Jesus Christ. This relationship is characterized by receiving grace upon grace, leading to a life filled with the fullness of Christ. Through this relationship, believers are not only changed internally but are also empowered to live out their faith in a way that reflects the love and truth of Christ to the world. This transformation is evident in the lives of the apostles, who were ordinary men transformed by the power of Christ. As believers, we are invited to experience this same transformation by embracing the grace that Jesus offers and allowing it to permeate every aspect of our lives. [01:41]
John 1:16-17 (ESV): "For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."
Reflection: In what ways can you open yourself more to the transformative grace of Christ today, allowing it to impact your thoughts, actions, and interactions with others?
Day 2: Sincerity in the Christian Journey
Sincerity and honesty are crucial in the Christian journey. Jesus commends Nathaniel for his lack of guile, highlighting that God values a heart that is open and genuine. Without sincerity, one cannot truly progress in the spiritual life. A sincere heart is one that is willing to be vulnerable before God, acknowledging its weaknesses and seeking His strength. This openness allows for a deeper relationship with God, as it removes the barriers that prevent us from fully experiencing His love and guidance. As we strive to be sincere in our walk with Christ, we are encouraged to examine our motives and intentions, ensuring that they align with the truth of the Gospel. [05:09]
Psalm 51:6 (ESV): "Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart."
Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you struggle with being sincere before God? How can you invite Him into those areas today to cultivate a more genuine relationship?
Day 3: The Foundation of Scriptural Knowledge
While not essential for salvation, a knowledge of the Scriptures provides a valuable foundation for understanding and recognizing the truth of Christ. It equips believers to discern spiritual experiences and teachings, ensuring that they align with the truth of the Gospel. The Scriptures serve as a guide, offering wisdom and insight into the character of God and His plan for humanity. As believers, we are encouraged to immerse ourselves in the Word, allowing it to shape our understanding and inform our decisions. By doing so, we are better equipped to navigate the complexities of life and remain steadfast in our faith. [08:39]
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV): "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."
Reflection: How can you incorporate more time in Scripture into your daily routine, and what specific steps can you take to deepen your understanding of God's Word?
Day 4: Embracing Partial Truths
Believers should embrace and confess the truths they do understand, even if their knowledge is incomplete. This openness to truth allows for further revelation and deeper understanding, as seen in Nathaniel's confession of Jesus. By acknowledging the truths we do see, we position ourselves to receive greater insights and revelations from God. This requires humility and a willingness to admit that we do not have all the answers, but we trust in the One who does. As we grow in our faith, we are encouraged to remain open to the leading of the Holy Spirit, who guides us into all truth. [15:23]
1 Corinthians 13:12 (ESV): "For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known."
Reflection: What partial truths have you embraced in your spiritual journey, and how can you remain open to further revelation and understanding from God?
Day 5: The Promise of Greater Things
Jesus promises believers that they will experience greater things as they grow in their faith. This includes a deeper knowledge of Christ, greater experiences of His grace, and an ever-expanding understanding of His work and person. The Christian journey is one of continuous growth, moving from glory to glory, as believers deepen their understanding of Christ's person and work. This promise of greater things is a source of hope and encouragement, reminding us that our journey with Christ is dynamic and ever-evolving. As we remain faithful and open to His leading, we can expect to see His hand at work in our lives in ways we never imagined. [17:31]
Ephesians 3:20-21 (ESV): "Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen."
Reflection: What "greater things" are you hoping to see in your walk with Christ, and how can you actively pursue a deeper relationship with Him to experience these promises?
Quotes
Christianity is not morality not merely religion not merely church membership a Christian is a man who's in a vital living relationship to the Son of God and he has received something of his fullness now John the Baptist I say bore testimony to that people thought that he John was the long expected Ed Messiah. [00:01:28]
My dear friends without sincerity without honesty you get nowhere in this life you can get a good way in the world without sincerity you can travel far without being found out even in the world you'll probably be found out eventually but it's no use bringing that into this room you can't even start here the Lord knows everything he reads us like an open book. [00:04:42]
This case surely and indeed the other cases also show us the importance of religious instruction particularly a knowledge of the scriptures you notice that these men all speak in terms of the scriptures we have found him of whom Moses in the law and the the prophets did right now that conveyed something to Nathaniel it had already meant a great deal to philli it had meant a great deal to all of them. [00:06:38]
It is the importance of accepting and acknowledging what we do see that's the thing that's taught us here you remember the story Nathaniel comes at the request of Phillip and our Lord sees him coming and he makes this remark concerning him behold an Israelite indeed in whom is no gu and immediately Nathaniel is arrested by this Nathaniel said unto him when Nest thou me how do you know me. [00:10:19]
Nathaniel answered and said unto him Rabbi Thou Art the Son of God Thou Art the king of Israel now what does this mean well it means this when our Lord revealed to Nathaniel that he had watched him there under the Fig Tree remember how the branches come down almost to the earth and the leaves conceal them in it was a secret place into which people retired for thought and meditation and prayer. [00:11:15]
The lesson therefore of Nathaniel to us is to tell us never to hold back because we haven't understood it all take hold of what you do see and understand hold on to that admit it and confess it let it be known say yes I see this I have no other explanation and up to the point that you've arrived it acknowledge it completely. [00:16:15]
Jesus answered then said unto Nathaniel because I said unto thee I saw thee under the Fig Tree believest thou now it's here in the form of a question but I tend to agree with those who say that it shouldn't be put in the form of a question that our Lord is really making a statement he says because I said unto thee I saw thee under the Fig Tree you believe all right Nathaniel this is wonderful this is excellent. [00:16:56]
Hereafter ye shall see Heaven open Thou shalt see greater things than these Hereafter you shall see Heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the son of man now then here is to me one of the most encouraging things in the whole of the scripture The Promise of Greater things yeah we are at the end of many many months of studying this great chapter. [00:17:28]
This is but the beginning you know and you and I my friends must realize that this morning we are but at the beginning of a very great journey there's no end to it that's the glory I say of this Christian Life this keeps on emerging in this Gospel According to St John particularly in the eth chapter later on we'll find that certain people one day listening to our Lord they believed on him. [00:21:01]
He is the lad Between Heaven and Earth he is God's way of Salvation and the angels of God are his servants he made them he created them they're but ministering Spirits ministering to him and to the a of Salvation whom he's come to save he is this great latter he's the way from men to God from Earth to Heaven it's all in him and he says I'm going to explain this to you and lead you out into its eternities. [00:26:10]
He is telling us that we can have yet greater and greater experiences of his grace in this life you grow in Grace and in the knowledge of the Lord and thank God for this experimental side also there is nothing again I say more fascinating about this Christian life than the stages in experience each one seems to be perfect when we receive it and it satisfies us completely and we tend to think we've got it all and that there's nothing further to happen. [00:30:29]
Christian people you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ but let me ask you a question do you know him do you know him personally this is what he's promised at that day ye shall know that I am in my father and ye in me and I in you do you know that you see to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ is only the beginning he says you start there I'll take take you on greater things I'll reveal listen. [00:31:30]
