Embracing Trials: Strengthening Faith Through Adversity

Sermon Summary

Sermon Clips

James encourages us to rejoice in trials, not because of the pain they bring, but because of the growth they can produce. This joy is a choice, rooted in the understanding that God can use our difficulties for good. We are also urged to ask God for wisdom, seeking His guidance to navigate through our challenges. [00:48:13]

Trials test our faith, much like refining metals, where impurities are burned away to reveal something pure. They develop endurance, teaching us to remain steadfast and unmovable in our faith. This endurance is crucial, as it helps us mature in our character, growing us into the people God intends us to be. [00:42:40]

The clearer our perspective is, the more stable and strong we are going to be during the trial. So if you're taking notes, write this down: perspective feeds your faith, and faith gives you confidence to endure. [00:29:12]

James says here in verses two is this: trials are inevitable. Verse two says, "Count it all joy when you fall into various trials." Notice he doesn't say if you go through a trial but when you go through it. He says, "Count on it you will have the trials." [00:30:54]

Trials are not elective courses. You don't sit down and say, you know, I think I want to go through a trial Tuesday at 8 o'clock every day. We don't do that, right? Trials are inevitable. They're a required course. You can't opt out. [00:32:18]

Trials are unpredictable. They usually catch us by surprise. Trials don't warn you in advance, right? They just show up when you least expect it. Again, that word various in verse two means unpredictable. [00:34:39]

James is encouraging us at the beginning, if you call it encouragement, to know this: they're inevitable, they're variable, and they're unpredictable. But in all of that, then he jumps right into that trials are purposeful. There's always a God purpose behind the trial. [00:35:34]

Trials test our faith. You want to know where you are with God? You want to know how strong a believer you are, how mature you are? The trial will show you. It'll show you exactly where you are with God. [00:36:28]

Trials develop endurance. I like the old English word here for that. It's called steadfastness. Good King James word, right? So what is steadfastness? Steadfastness is staying power. That's what it is, literally the ability to handle pressure, the ability to keep hanging on and keep hanging in there when things go bad. [00:43:13]

Rejoice knowing God can use it. Verse two says, "My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials." Now don't misunderstand, okay? He's not saying pretend there's no problem. He's not saying fake it till you make it. He's not saying put a plastic smile on and wear a mask. [00:46:34]

Ask God for wisdom. We need to know what to do during the trial. They're all different, so one size doesn't fit all. The only way to know how to truly honor God is to ask Him for the wisdom. Verse five: if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God who gives to all liberally and without reproach. [00:48:13]

Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love him. Then we are to get the blessing. [00:51:59]
