Embracing Transformation Through the Spirit of God
Summary
### Summary
Good morning, Unionville Alliance Church. Today, we continue our series on "Living in the Spirit" by delving into Romans 8:9-14. We began with a quick recap of the past two weeks, where Pastor Daniel highlighted our inherent sinfulness and the good news that there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. He also discussed the two mindsets: one of the Spirit and one of the flesh. Today, we explored the unseen reality of the Spirit of God living within us, much like gravity, which is unseen but affects every part of our lives.
We discussed the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, likening it to a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly. This transformation is not just a change in behavior but a profound shift in our very nature. We live in a physical reality limited by time and space, but the Spirit connects us to a higher, spiritual reality. This connection allows us to experience God's love, grace, and mercy, even in a world marred by sin and suffering.
Paul's message in Romans 8:9-14 is clear: if we have the Spirit of Christ, we belong to Him. This Spirit gives us life and righteousness, even though our physical bodies are subject to death. Jesus promised us peace and an abundant life, despite the troubles we face in this world. The Spirit's presence in us is like rivers of living water, overflowing with love, joy, and peace.
We also discussed the importance of embracing this transformation by investing in our relationship with God. This could mean establishing spiritual disciplines, serving in the church, or joining a life group. The Spirit's transformative power is not just for our benefit but also for the world around us. As we grow in our relationship with God, we become conduits of His love and grace to others.
In conclusion, we are called to live in the Spirit, embracing the transformation it brings. This involves a conscious effort to feed our spiritual relationship and live out our identity as children of God. As we do so, we will experience the fullness of life that Jesus promised, even in the midst of life's challenges.

Devotional
Day 1: The Unseen Reality of the Spirit
The Spirit of God is an unseen force that profoundly transforms us from within, much like gravity affects every aspect of our lives. This transformation is not merely a change in behavior but a fundamental shift in our very nature, aligning us with God's will. The Spirit's presence within us is a powerful, unseen reality that shapes our thoughts, actions, and entire being. It connects us to a higher spiritual reality, allowing us to experience God's love, grace, and mercy in a world marred by sin and suffering. This unseen reality is a constant, guiding force that leads us toward a life of righteousness and peace.
Just as gravity is an unseen force that affects every aspect of our lives, the Spirit of God is an unseen reality that transforms us from within. This transformation is profound, changing our very nature and aligning us with God's will. [45:20]
Romans 8:11 (ESV): "If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you."
Reflection: Think of a recent situation where you felt overwhelmed or lost. How can you invite the Holy Spirit to guide and transform your perspective in that situation today?
Day 2: Living in Two Realities
We exist in a physical world limited by time and space, but through the Spirit, we are connected to a higher, spiritual reality. This dual existence allows us to experience God's love, grace, and mercy, even amidst the brokenness of our world. The Spirit bridges the gap between our physical and spiritual realities, enabling us to live with a sense of purpose and hope. By embracing this connection, we can navigate the challenges of life with the assurance that we are part of a greater, divine plan.

2 Corinthians 4:18 (ESV): "As we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal."
Reflection: Identify one area of your life where you feel disconnected from God. How can you intentionally seek to connect with the spiritual reality of God's presence in that area today?
Day 3: The Spirit as a Source of Life
The Spirit of Christ within us is the defining mark of a true follower of Jesus. This Spirit gives us life and righteousness, even though our physical bodies are subject to death. It is a source of peace and abundant life, despite the troubles we face. The presence of the Spirit within us is like rivers of living water, overflowing with love, joy, and peace. This life-giving Spirit empowers us to overcome the challenges of the world and live in the fullness of life that Jesus promised.

John 7:38-39 (ESV): "Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified."
Reflection: Reflect on a recent challenge you faced. How did you experience the Spirit's peace and life in that situation? How can you rely more on the Spirit in future challenges?
Day 4: Embracing Transformation
To fully embrace the transformation the Spirit offers, we must invest in our relationship with God. This could involve establishing spiritual disciplines, serving in the church, or joining a life group. The Spirit's transformative power is not just for our benefit but also for the world around us. As we grow in our relationship with God, we become conduits of His love and grace to others. Reflection: What is one spiritual discipline you can commit to this week to deepen your relationship with God? How can this discipline help you embrace the transformation the Spirit offers?
Day 5: Living Out Our Identity
Our true identity is as children of God. When we live out of this identity, we experience a sense of confidence and belonging. This identity shapes how we interact with the world and allows us to be conduits of God's love and grace to others. Living out our identity as God's children involves a conscious effort to align our actions and attitudes with our divine heritage. As we do so, we will experience the fullness of life that Jesus promised, even in the midst of life's challenges.

1 John 3:1 (ESV): "See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him."
Reflection: How does knowing your identity as a child of God change the way you view yourself and others? What is one practical way you can live out this identity today?
Quotes
### Quotes for Outreach
1. "If you think COVID turned our world upside down, what would happen to us if tomorrow there was no gravity? If you stop to just think about it for a few seconds, you would realize that gravity exists. Everything as we know it is dependent upon that gravitational pull. It's an unseen reality that affects every part of our lives. Okay. And today, we are going to be talking about another unseen reality, and that's the spiritual reality, the spirit of God living in us." [45:20] (37 seconds)
2. "The miracle of transformation. That little caterpillar is going to tell you that it's going to become a butterfly. And when we see these great transformations, we're awed. We're absolutely awed. Whether it is a caterpillar, whether it is the ugly duckling that becomes a swan, whether it's a dilapidated building that somehow becomes a premier hotel, we're awed to see the transformation. And today, the good news is that the Holy Spirit wants to transform us. Transform us from one reality into another." [45:20] (33 seconds)
3. "God has great plans for us. But sometimes a lot of us go through life existing. Yes, we're alive. We wake up every day. We're breathing. But what happens? We get up. We go through our regular routines every day, whether it's going to work, whether it's going to school, whatever it is. We eat our meals. We watch our television shows. We scroll through. We go to social media. Whatever it is we do. And then we go to bed. The next day we start the whole thing over again. And we just go through the motions. There's no abundant life in us. But God is saying, I came. I came so that you could have abundant life." [57:46] (38 seconds)
4. "Imagine you being that wherever you go, that well of living water is just automatically flowing out of you. Even if you don't say a word, to bless the people around you. I'm not finished yet. One more. 2 Corinthians 4.8. This is now Paul speaking at another time, another letter that he wrote to another church. We are hard-pressed on every side, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but we are not in despair. We're persecuted, but we're not abandoned. We're stuck down, but not destroyed." [01:00:32] (36 seconds)
5. "If you choose to do that, life may not be rosy. You will experience challenges. You will experience great challenges, but God will be there with you, filling you with life, with peace, with joy, despite your circumstances. So we're going to end with that song. And when we sing that song, sing it as a prayer. And we're going to just end now with one example. I've got a book here. It's called Vanya. It's a relatively old book published in the 70s. And this is a beautiful example. Of how God comes down and supports someone who is in a difficult situation." [01:16:37] (37 seconds)
### Quotes for Members
1. "So this is good news. He says, you're over here. You should be condemned. But the good news is, you're over here. You're over here. You're over here. You're over here. That you, if you have taken on Jesus, and you have that connection, you are not living in this realm anymore. Because you see, we are body, we are mind, and we are a spirit. And now our spirits have open connection to Christ. So we have that connection to the Spirit, even though we're living in this world." [51:32] (28 seconds)
2. "But the life of God is in us because of righteousness. We have that connection. We are not going to be here alone. The Spirit of God, all love, all grace, all mercy is supporting us as we live in this world. That's good news. And let me tell you a little bit more about this in depth. We're going to look at other verses that give us this sense of what it means, what Paul is talking about here." [54:39] (30 seconds)
3. "We are hard-pressed on every side, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but we are not in despair. We're persecuted, but we're not abandoned. We're stuck down, but not destroyed. See? Paul is here. He's here in this world. And he's living and experiencing the effects of sin. But what is he saying? He's not crushed down. He's not in despair. He is not abandoned. When we are living in this world, connected to Jesus, allowing him to transform us and fill us, we will experience victory over our sinful desires. We will experience supernatural peace. And we will sense, we will experience deep, belonging, being loved, and we will soar over the storms." [01:00:32] (51 seconds)
4. "So Paul is giving us such good news about the ability of being transformed and what it means. And now he's giving us one more detail. So that if we're living here, not only will the Spirit transform us, but that Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead will also raise our mortal bodies. Think about it. Jesus was dead. Dead is dead is dead is dead. It's final. It's the end. There's no more. For those of you who've experienced the loss of loved ones, you will know that that anguish of not being able to see your loved ones ever again. It's so final. But Paul is telling them that Spirit is so strong. Spirit is so powerful that it raised a dead body and give you hope that your body will also be raised." [01:04:57] (47 seconds)
5. "We need to embrace the transformation, the power of the spirit that's working in us to continue living in this world. Okay, we can talk about that. But practical steps. What does it mean to embrace the transformation and the power of the spirit? Well, first of all, you may be here and completely closed off and you've never made so that would be your starting point. Turn to Jesus and make that connection and start living as a follower of Jesus. But maybe you've done that, but then you need to invest in that relationship. Maybe you're realizing that, you know what, I really haven't been feeding this relationship. I need to do more." [01:11:00] (44 seconds)
