Embracing Transformation Through Faith and Generosity
Summary
In today's gathering, we celebrated the profound transformation that comes with accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior. We witnessed the baptism of three individuals, Alvis, Devin, and McKenzie, who publicly declared their faith and commitment to a new life in Christ. This act of baptism is a testament to the chain-breaking power of Jesus, symbolizing the shedding of old ways and embracing a renewed life filled with purpose and hope. Baptism is not just a ritual; it is a powerful declaration of faith and a step towards living a life transformed by God's love and grace.
We also discussed the importance of supporting Compassion International, an organization dedicated to lifting children and families out of poverty, particularly in El Salvador. Through our Compassion Christmas offering, we aim to provide Christmas gifts and essential resources to these families, ensuring they experience the joy and love of the season. This initiative is a reflection of our call to be generous and open-handed, extending God's love beyond our immediate community to those in desperate need.
As we continue our series on "The Spirit of Christmas," we explored the true essence of Christmas, which is not merely about festivities and gifts but about the promise and power of Jesus Christ. The spirit of Christmas is a reminder of God's faithfulness and His power to fulfill promises. Jesus' birth is the ultimate fulfillment of God's promise, showcasing His power to transform lives and break the chains of sin, fear, and doubt.
We are reminded that true power does not come from human innovation or strength but from the Spirit of God working within us. Jesus came to set us free, to heal the brokenhearted, and to proclaim liberty to the captives. As believers, we are called to embrace this power, allowing it to transform our lives and the lives of those around us. We must trust in God's promises, break free from the chains that bind us, and live a life of transformation, reflecting His love and grace to the world.

Day 1: Baptism as a Gateway to Transformation
Baptism is more than a symbolic act; it is a profound declaration of faith and a commitment to a new life in Christ. It represents the shedding of old ways and the embrace of a life filled with purpose and hope through Jesus. This act is a testament to the chain-breaking power of Jesus, who sets us free from our past and empowers us to live with purpose and hope. As Alvis, Devin, and McKenzie demonstrated through their baptisms, this step is a public affirmation of their faith and a commitment to living a life transformed by God's love and grace. Baptism is a powerful reminder that through Christ, we are made new, and our lives are forever changed. [08:35]
Colossians 2:12-13 (ESV): "Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses."
Reflection: Consider your own journey of faith. How does your baptism, or the idea of baptism, inspire you to live a life that reflects the transformation and renewal found in Christ?
Day 2: Generosity as an Expression of Faith
Supporting organizations like Compassion International is a reflection of our call to be generous and open-handed. By providing resources and support to those in need, we extend God's love beyond our immediate community, impacting lives and bringing hope to those in desperate situations. The Compassion Christmas offering is an opportunity to provide Christmas gifts and essential resources to families in El Salvador, ensuring they experience the joy and love of the season. This initiative is a tangible expression of our faith, demonstrating that true generosity flows from a heart transformed by God's love. [22:06]
2 Corinthians 9:11-12 (ESV): "You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God."
Reflection: Reflect on a time when you were able to give generously. How did it impact you and those you helped? What steps can you take today to extend generosity to someone in need?
Day 3: Rediscovering the Spirit of Christmas
The true essence of Christmas is not merely about festivities and gifts but about the promise and power of Jesus Christ. The spirit of Christmas is a reminder of God's faithfulness and His power to fulfill promises. Jesus' birth is the ultimate fulfillment of God's promise, showcasing His power to transform lives and break the chains of sin, fear, and doubt. As we celebrate this season, we are called to focus on the transformative power of Christ's birth and the hope it brings to the world. [31:42]
Isaiah 9:6-7 (ESV): "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this."
Reflection: How can you shift your focus this Christmas season from material gifts to the spiritual gift of Jesus? What traditions or practices can you incorporate to keep Christ at the center of your celebrations?
Day 4: Embracing God's Transformational Power
True power comes from the Spirit of God working within us. Jesus came to set us free, heal the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captives. As believers, we are called to embrace this power, allowing it to transform our lives and the lives of those around us. This transformation is not about human strength or innovation but about the Spirit of God working within us to bring about change and renewal. By trusting in God's promises, we can break free from the chains that bind us and live a life of transformation, reflecting His love and grace to the world. [36:02]
Ephesians 3:16-19 (ESV): "That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."
Reflection: Identify an area in your life where you feel bound or limited. How can you invite God's transformational power into this area to experience freedom and renewal?
Day 5: Living a Life of Transformation
We must trust in God's promises, break free from the chains that bind us, and live a life of transformation. This means allowing God to change our thoughts, motivations, and desires, reflecting His love and grace to the world. Transformation is not just about avoiding worldly behaviors but becoming more like Christ. As we embrace change and transformation, we are called to reflect God's love and grace in our daily lives, impacting those around us and living out our faith in tangible ways. [59:57]
Romans 12:2 (ESV): "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."
Reflection: What is one specific area of your life where you need to allow God to transform your thoughts and actions? How can you take a step today to align more closely with Christ's example?
Quotes
"In El Salvador, more than one in four individuals live in poverty. And it's a reality that severely impacts health, nutrition, education, and safety of those children, of those families. For pregnant mothers and newborns, these are especially acute, right? Mortality rates are high. Babies that do survive often suffer from malnutrition and sickness. And so all the things we do helps mothers get proper medical care, helps the children get proper medical care, right? We don't just feed them, but we make sure that they're getting the proper medical attention that they need and all of those things. 91 % of global maternal deaths and 85 % of infant deaths occur in the regions that pass through El Salvador. So it's a reality that severely impacts health, nutrition, education, education, and safety of those families. And so all of those things are intentional about making sure these families are healthy. 6 ,500 babies less than one month old die every day in those regions, every day, every day. One out of every two deaths under the age of five is attributed to undernutrition, not having access to nutrition and having proper food and proper medical care, right? And there has been a 25 % increase in acute malnutrition among pregnant and nursing mothers. And so all of those things are attributed to undernutrition. And so all of those because what happens in these countries is these mothers take everything they can to feed their children, and they don't properly take care of themselves, and so it leads to all kinds of issues when it comes to them." [00:23:17] (87 seconds)
"Because when we talk about the spirit of Christmas, we're talking about Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, our Savior, coming to earth to save humankind. Right? We're talking about Jesus Christ, our Savior, coming to earth to save humankind. We talked about it last week that the spirit of Christmas was about saving us. And that in Genesis chapter 3, beginning in verse 15, all the way through Revelations chapter 20, the plan of God unfolded for the redemption of man. And that's the Christmas story. And we talked about that Jesus was the promise of Christmas. It's a reminder of God's faithfulness. It's a reminder of his power. And we want to challenge you this month. What I want to challenge you and even myself is challenge us this month to look past the celebrating only and look forward to what's coming up, to go beyond the surface level of the season, to go past what the world and society say Christmas is and experience the faith that's truly behind Christmas and why we celebrate Christmas." [00:31:42] (64 seconds)
"Here's what the Christmas story does, or it should do. It reminds us that true power doesn't come from human innovation, but it comes from the Spirit of God working in and through us. That's what the Christmas story should do. Two, last week we read the prophecy in Isaiah 61, right? And today I want to look at that same prophecy, but I want to look at it in a little bit of a different light. I want to look at it as Jesus read it in Luke chapter 4, right? Because in Luke chapter 4, beginning in verse 16, Jesus reads the same prophecy. I'm going to begin in verse 16." [00:36:02] (38 seconds)
"And when he opened the book, he found the place where it was written. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. And then he closed. He closed the book and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, today, this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. Today, God, open our hearts, opened our minds to hear and to receive what you have for us. God, I believe that the spirit of Christmas is your son, Jesus Christ." [00:36:51] (50 seconds)
"Jesus physically coming to earth shows God's power to fulfill that promise. The first part of verse 18 says that the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has what? Anointed me. He anointed me. Jesus begins his public ministry by declaring the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy. Right? This is Jesus saying, here I am. Here is the promise of God in the flesh before you right now. Here I am. Right? His anointing was not. His anointing was not random. His anointing was predestined by God from the beginning." [00:38:41] (42 seconds)
"At the end of the day, a lot of us are walking around with doubt and unbelief, and God wants to fulfill a promise in us. He's just waiting for us to show some faith. Right? The Bible consistently portrays God as a promise -keeping God, and Jesus was the embodiment of that promise. His life and death on the cross are seen as the ultimate fulfillment of the promise of God. Have you ever had someone break a promise to you?" [00:41:00] (29 seconds)
"Over and over in scripture, he delivers his people, even when his people messed up, even when his people walked away, even when his people did things they shouldn't have done. How many times did he save Israel, even in the middle of their mess? He saved them from Egypt. They griped and complained because they didn't get saved the way they thought they should have been saved. They built a God to worship and God delivers them, right? Over and over, God delivers his people. Here's the point. I want you to understand God is a chain breaker, but I'm going to ask you this question. If God is a chain breaker, why is the world still living in bondage?" [00:51:49] (44 seconds)
"At the end of the day, you and I have the key to the kingdom of heaven, and it's Jesus Christ, and it's the cross that he died on, and people will stay bound until we believe enough that he can release people from those chains and release us from those chains. The problem is enough of us won't get down on our knees before God and seek his face and ask him to remove the things in our life that hinder us to reach others." [00:52:56] (28 seconds)
"Transformation means I don't think the way I used to think. When my wife and I went through the things that we went through, I had to change the way I thought about our relationship for our relationship to look different. Did it mean it was all fixed overnight? No. Did it mean we fought? Yes. But what it did do is allow me to look at her in a different light through God's eyes so that my mind changed." [01:00:54] (25 seconds)
"God wants us to live a life of transformation and go where the people are struggling and take transformation to them. How many times in Scripture in Jesus' life did the religious come to him and say, you shouldn't be eating with them? You shouldn't be talking to them. Why? Jesus said, because the well don't need a doctor, the sick need a doctor. At the end of the day, if I don't go where help is needed, help will never show up." [01:05:12] (28 seconds)
