Embracing the Transformative Power of the Holy Spirit

Summary

Christianity has always been about wrestling with what we believe and what we don’t, and for centuries, creeds have helped us clarify the heart of our faith. The Nicene Creed, written in 325 AD, is one of those foundational statements, and today’s focus is on the Holy Spirit: “the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.” The Holy Spirit is not a late addition to the story of God, but has been present and active since the very beginning—hovering over the waters in Genesis, empowering prophets, descending on Jesus at his baptism, and raising him from the dead. The Spirit is not an impersonal force or a vague experience, but a person—relational, present, and alive within us.

It’s easy to ignore or misunderstand the Holy Spirit because we can’t visualize him the way we might imagine the Father or the Son. Yet, Scripture insists that when we believe, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us, marking us as God’s own and breathing new life into us. The Spirit is the ongoing giver of life, not just a one-time gift. Like the wind, the Spirit is invisible but unmistakable in effect—if we pay attention, we can feel his presence and see the results in our lives.

Often, we think the Christian life is about trying harder or avoiding certain behaviors, but the real transformation comes from being led by the Spirit. The law was given at Pentecost to guide God’s people, but at Pentecost for the church, the Spirit was given to empower us from within. The greatest obstacle to living the life God wants for us is not our circumstances, but ourselves—our tendency to rely on our own strength instead of the Spirit’s guidance.

The Spirit nudges, prompts, and guides us in everyday moments—sometimes in small ways, like a reminder to show kindness or keep a promise, and sometimes in big ways that change the trajectory of our lives. When we listen and respond to these promptings, we experience the life God intends for us. The Spirit is God’s presence within us, our helper and friend, inviting us to walk in step with him and be transformed from the inside out.

Key Takeaways

- The Holy Spirit is not a distant or abstract concept, but God himself—present, personal, and relational. He has been active since the beginning of creation, and his presence is inseparable from the Father and the Son. Recognizing the Spirit as a person invites us into a living relationship, not just a set of beliefs or experiences. [08:03]

- The Spirit is the ongoing giver of life, not just a one-time gift. He continually breathes life into us, reviving us when we feel empty or weary. This means that no matter how dry or lifeless we feel, the Spirit is always ready to renew and sustain us if we are open to his work. [05:24]

- The Spirit’s presence is often invisible, like the wind, but his effects are tangible and real. We may not always “see” the Spirit, but we can feel his nudges, sense his guidance, and witness the changes he brings in our attitudes, actions, and relationships. Paying attention to these subtle promptings can lead to profound transformation. [14:36]

- The greatest barrier to living a Spirit-led life is often ourselves—our self-reliance, our desire for control, and our focus on trying harder. True change comes not from striving, but from surrendering to the Spirit’s leading, allowing him to guide our choices and shape our character. This is the difference between living by the law and living by the Spirit. [17:07]

- Responding to the Spirit’s promptings, even in small or seemingly insignificant ways, can have a ripple effect that changes lives—our own and others’. When we act on those nudges, we participate in God’s work in the world, experience his faithfulness, and grow in trust and intimacy with him. [32:24]

Devotional

Day 1: The Holy Spirit is God, Present from the Beginning
The Holy Spirit is not a late addition to the story of God, but has been present and active since the very beginning of creation. The Spirit of God hovered over the waters at creation, moved in the lives of people throughout the Old Testament, and was present at key moments in Jesus’ life and ministry. The Holy Spirit is fully God—eternal, powerful, and intimately involved in the world and in our lives. This means that the same Spirit who was present at creation is the one who now dwells within believers, offering guidance, comfort, and life. [04:06]

Genesis 1:2 (ESV)
"The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters."

Reflection: How does knowing the Holy Spirit has always been present with God change the way you view His presence in your own life today?

Day 2: The Holy Spirit Dwells Within Every Believer
When you put your faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live within you, marking you as God’s own and empowering you for a new way of life. This indwelling is not just a theological concept but a living reality—God Himself is closer than your very breath. Even though we may not always sense or understand the Spirit’s presence, He is always at work within us, guiding, convicting, and giving us life. The challenge is not whether the Spirit is present, but whether we are attentive and responsive to His leading. [09:48]

Ephesians 1:13 (ESV)
"In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit."

Reflection: In what ways can you become more aware of the Holy Spirit’s presence and activity in your daily life?

Day 3: The Holy Spirit is the Giver of Life and Our Guide
The Holy Spirit is not just a force or an experience, but a person who gives life and desires a relationship with us. He breathes new life into weary souls, guides us in truth, and prompts us toward what is good and right. Like the wind, the Spirit’s presence may be invisible, but His effects are unmistakable—transforming hearts, renewing hope, and empowering us to live differently. When we are open to the Spirit’s leading, we find ourselves changed from the inside out, able to do what we could never do on our own. [14:36]

Romans 8:11 (ESV)
"If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you."

Reflection: Where in your life do you need the Holy Spirit to breathe new life or offer guidance today?

Day 4: Life Change Comes from Walking by the Spirit
The Christian life is not about trying harder or simply avoiding wrong things, but about learning to walk by the Spirit—allowing God to lead, nudge, and empower us. When we walk by the Spirit, we are set free from the patterns of our old life and enabled to live in a way that honors God and brings true fulfillment. This means paying attention to the Spirit’s promptings, making wise choices, and letting God’s will shape every part of our lives. The Spirit is the key to real transformation, not our own effort. [17:07]

Galatians 5:16 (ESV)
"But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."

Reflection: What is one area where you have been relying on your own strength instead of the Spirit’s guidance, and how can you surrender it to Him today?

Day 5: Responding to the Spirit’s Nudges Changes Everything
God’s Spirit is always at work, prompting us with gentle nudges, elbows, and whispers to do what is right, kind, and generous. These promptings may seem small or even inconvenient, but responding to them is where real life change happens. When we listen and act on the Spirit’s guidance—whether it’s being honest, showing kindness, or keeping a promise—we experience God’s presence and see the impact in our lives and the lives of others. The more we respond, the more we are shaped into the people God created us to be. [34:38]

John 14:26 (ESV)
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you."

Reflection: What is one nudge or prompting from the Holy Spirit you sense today, and how will you choose to respond?

Quotes

The Spirit is not a thing that you have or don't have, nor is the Spirit an experience. The Spirit is a person, which means the Holy Spirit, he's incredibly relational. You interact with the Holy Spirit. You talk with him. You lean on him. It will guide you. It will direct you because it's relational. It's a he. [00:07:57] (00:00:25 seconds) Edit Clip

If the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you once again it dwells in you when you become a Christian. He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit who dwells in you. [00:10:36] (00:00:15 seconds) Edit Clip

Isn't it interesting God the Father Jesus the Son the Holy Spirit the one that is actually closest to us the one that it actually dwells within us we actually ignore it often at least we often don't think about it it's often like this non -factor in our lives and I'm guilty of that as well I can't see it I can't get it so I can ignore it and I'll actually not even I'll pretend like it's not even there I'm guilty of that as well. [00:11:01] (00:00:41 seconds) Edit Clip

Old Testament word for the Holy Spirit is this. It's ruach. New Testament word in the Greek is pneuma. Those are both the words for the Holy Spirit. Those words mean breath and wind. Essentially, it's telling us the Holy Spirit is the wind, like the wind. You cannot see it, but you can feel it, and you can see the effects from it. And if we are aware of it, if we will look for it and respond to it, it will change our lives. It will change our lives. [00:16:32] (00:00:49 seconds) Edit Clip

Over time, if you keep coming, and you keep coming, and you keep coming, God will grab your heart, you'll start to enjoy it. something will start to happen and the reason why you are here will start to change and you'll start to have these thoughts where I want to learn how to love God more and then you'll start to think to yourself I want to live a different way and then you'll start to think to yourself I want to find what life is all about that's what happens. [00:18:05] (00:00:34 seconds) Edit Clip

The biggest obstacle to live in life this way and doing this thing for me is me the biggest obstacle for you living this way is you because we think this Christian life is about if we can just try harder if we can just work and try harder then we can find life and we can live the way God wants us to live what we are going to learn is that is not the way if we can allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit by God that dwells inside of us that is where life change happens that is how we live and experience the kind of life that we're looking for. [00:18:47] (00:00:53 seconds) Edit Clip

When there's that nudging, when there's that prompting, what that is, it's the Holy Spirit speak to me and say, no, no, no, no, no. You got to do it. And I listened. And I did it. And I'm so grateful. It was the best hundred dollars I ever spent. [00:33:21] (00:00:18 seconds) Edit Clip

If you want to change your life, you will get those nudges. You will get those elbows. You will get those promptings. God lives inside of you. God lives inside of you. And he wants to guide and direct and lead you. And he will tap you on the shoulder. He will. He will prompt you. It will happen today. It will happen this week. God will give you a nudging. And you'll have this sense of, I should be kind to this person at work. I should help my neighbor out. But I should be honest with my sin. I should be caring to that person. I should be generous to a perfect stranger. You will say no to something you know you shouldn't do. And you will say yes to something you've never said yes to before. And that is the Holy Spirit working in your life. And if we only listen to it, it will change our lives. And after all, that's what we're looking for, isn't it?
