1) "I still remember where I was when I first got hit by that revelation of grace. I was at Bible college at the time doing my theology degree. I was sitting on my desk at home writing this essay on the metanarrative of scripture. That's reading the word as one story and I just got hit by the love of God and that He would extend His grace to me through His Son Jesus and it changed me. I bawled my eyes out all night. But you know the thing I find about grace is that we can re-immerse ourselves over and over and over again. You don't just get there, you just re-immerse yourself in that revelation and grow deeper in that revelation of grace time and time again." 2) "Romans 5 says that just as sin entered the world through one man death spread to all mankind. And so this beautiful story begins of God redeeming and restoring mankind back to himself. This is the scripture. This is what we're reading. This is the meta-narrative. The one story. And it culminates in Jesus coming and redeeming us together. And it's a long story but you know let me sum up real quick. There's a scene in Exodus where the people of God that is the nation of Israel. They say hey look God we would way rather live by rules than by relationship. Give us the law rather than grace. 3) "Romans 5 verse 1. Therefore we have been justified by faith. Now we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through the shedding of Jesus's blood I'm justified. You're justified. Meaning I'm okay with God and God is okay with me. I had a moment this morning. I woke up. I was having a shower and there's my windows eye level and I looked out and I saw the sunrise and I thought you know what this is a great day. God doesn't hold anything against me. 4) "Jesus doesn't see you in spite of your sin. Jesus doesn't see you and hold your past against you. Jesus doesn't see you and say man I love Samuel but I can't believe he would do that. I just oh man I need to turn my face from him when he's doing that. Jesus sees me just as if I had never sinned in the first place. That's the good news. That's the word justification and I think so many Christians carry a chip on their shoulders. A burden on their backs. We talk like God. Talk about God as if he loves us in spite of our junk." 5) "And Randy Alcorn says, God's grace didn't get us going, then leave us by our own works. Grace didn't just justify us in our past. It sustains us in the present and will deliver us in the future. And this is where I want to pivot on my sermon this morning. Because you could hear this and you could say, well, you're just giving me license to sin. And you know what? You probably could keep sinning because you are completely loved, completely righteous, completely forgiven, eternally secure your salvation in Christ. 6) "Man, who wouldn't want to put time aside to hear their father's voice? Who wouldn't want to honor God with their whole life, including with their finances? Who wouldn't want to pursue a life of purity and live a life above reproach? You don't have to, but you get to. The grace is the empowerment to live this life of the Spirit. Dave Harvey says there is a glorious sequel to the saving, justifying grace. The grace that justifies us becomes the grace that sanctifies us. It is a prevailing, unstoppable grace that doesn't close up shop the day after the sinner's prayer. It's the power of God to help us overcome sin and a potent weapon in the fear of sin." 7) "And in verse 13, if I could read a little bit more. Paul says, My brothers and sisters, you are called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh. And so I, Paul, say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law."
