Embracing the Shepherd's Love: The True Power of Easter

Summary

On this radiant Easter morning, we gather to celebrate the profound truth of Christ's resurrection, a truth that transcends the mere rolling away of a stone or the empty tomb. The heart of Easter is not just in the triumph over death but in the sacrificial love of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, who willingly laid down His life for His sheep. In John 10, Jesus declares Himself as the gate for the sheep, the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep by name and lays down His life for them. This is not a story of a victim caught in a trap but of a shepherd choosing the cross, choosing love, and choosing us.

Easter is a testament to a love stronger than death, a love that saw each of us in our brokenness and declared us worth the ultimate sacrifice. Jesus did not stumble into the grave; He walked towards it with eyes wide open, fully aware of the consequences, yet resolute in His mission. This love is the heartbeat of Easter, a love that whispers hope into our lives amidst a world scrambling for power and control.

The power of Easter is not just in the empty tomb but in the blood of the Lamb, the cross where the shepherd laid down His life. This act of love exposed the lies of Satan and brought peace to earth and heaven. Revelation 12 paints a cosmic picture of this victory, where the child, Jesus, is snatched up to God's throne, defeating the dragon, Satan. The real triumph of Easter is not just in the resurrection but in the truth revealed by Jesus' death, a truth that has always been: the shepherd's love is stronger than death.

As we reflect on this Easter morning, let us not rush past the cross but linger on the sacrifice made. The shepherd's love is fierce, free, and forever, inviting us into a dance of eternal love. This is the true power of Easter, a power rooted in love, sacrifice, and the choice to love us freely. Let us join heaven's song, praising the Lamb who was slain, and carry this Easter truth into every corner of our world.

Quotes

``I want you to picture a shepherd with his staff and he's standing at the gate of the sheepfold. In Jesus' day, it would have looked a little bit like the picture there. He guards the gate so that no one goes in. And the sheep understand and they know his voice. But during that time, the flock, vulnerable and prone to wander and get lost, they trust his voice. He's not going to lead them astray. [00:09:08] (37 seconds)

When the wolf prowls and howls, he's going to stand firm and protect the flock. He says, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep in verse 11. Unlike that hired help who will scatter, disappear at the first sign of danger. Jesus knows his sheep by name. You are redeemed by the blood of the lamb because he knows your name. [00:10:27] (36 seconds)

This is the shepherd choosing the cross. Choosing the sacrifice. Choosing the love. Easter is the proof of all of that. His love is stronger than death itself. His love is stronger than death itself. But can you feel the weight of that choice? You go back to the Garden of Gethsemane, and we can see the weight that it had on Jesus. Can you see the weight of voluntarily sacrificing? [00:11:50] (43 seconds)

He walked straight at it. Eyes wide open, knowing the full consequences of the choices that he was going to make. His eyes were open. His heart was resolved. He was committed to do this thing. He'd already been through that portion where he asked God, If it's not, if there's another way, any way at all, then let me do that. But if this is your will, then I'm all in. [00:12:38] (30 seconds)

And in that process, that decision, with his eyes wide open, you know who he saw? He saw you. Yes, you, right where you are. In all of your mess and brokenness and wanderings and the problems that come to you, he saw you in that decision. And he said this, You're worth it. If you were the only one on the planet, he still would have gone through that because you, all by yourself, are worth it. [00:13:09] (40 seconds)

This is the day that we shout, Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Oh, I like that. He is risen indeed. It's the day that whispers hope into our dreams, into our lives, eternal and unshakable hope in a world that is scrambling for power, for control, for influence, strength. Easter sings a different song, doesn't it? [00:14:25] (33 seconds)

Easter sings a song about God's love, where God holds all the power that we'll ever need in our lives. But I'd like to linger for just a moment. Is the power of Easter just that stone that was rolled away that Mary found, the ladies found, as they got to the tomb? Is that all the power of Easter? This tomb that's been emptied by divine muscle. [00:14:58] (36 seconds)

Desperate, she pleads, Sir, if you've carried him away, just tell me where he is and I will go to him. And then, in a voice as soft as the dawn, Jesus looks at her and he says, Mary. He doesn't shout it. He whispers her name. He knows your name. Can you imagine that? He speaks her name with such tenderness and wisdom, knowing. [00:17:13] (40 seconds)

Easter's triumph I think the problem is that many times Sharon and I were talking about this yesterday we skip from Palm Sunday's cheering and the celebration to the empty tomb and we skip over the dark parts the hard to swallow parts but beloved I think we do ourselves a disservice we have to go through the week with Jesus and for a time for a moment we have to linger on that Friday and the sacrifice that was made we miss the heart of the story Easter's triumph without pausing at the cross is a mistake why did the shepherd die how did he face that death what does that mean for God his father what does it mean for Satan what does it mean for you and I that Friday that was so dark we need to spend some time there because those questions unlock the truth that won that cosmic war and here is that truth Easter doesn't show life overpowering death with a burst of glory it reveals what's always been true that the shepherd's love is stronger than death he rose because of his love he rose because he is love and love never fades [00:25:50] (99 seconds)
