Embracing the Sabbath: A Rhythm of Rest and Grace

Devotional

Sermon Summary

Sermon Clips

"Sabbath is more than, it's actually more than just a day off. It is actually a deliberate rhythm of stopping, of resting, of delighting and worshiping. This series is titled Beyond the Noise because it's actually an invitation for you to explore this deeper relationship with Jesus through these disciplines or these practices." [00:41:55] (25 seconds)

"As a reminder, these practices are a means to an end, with the end being to participate in the love and the life of God himself. These practices help us to be with Jesus to become like Him, and to do as he did." [00:43:13] (17 seconds)

"And so Sabbath is an opportunity to reorient from exhaustion toward fulfillment in life and is an act of resistance against the restlessness of this world. So Sabbath is a day to stop, is to rest, is to delight, and it is to worship. Sabbath is the grace of God's unmerited favor, right? Sabbath is that. But more than that, it is actually his undeserved presence." [00:45:28] (35 seconds)

"Sabbath isn't just a good idea. It's a God given rhythm. It was formalized as one of the 10 commandments, and Jesus claimed that he was Lord of the Sabbath. Wayne, Wayne Muller writes this, he writes, the Sabbath is not a burdensome requirement from some law giving deity, you ought you'd better you must, but rather, a remembrance of a law that is firmly embedded in the fabric of nature." [00:51:12] (35 seconds)

"It is a reminder of how things really are the rhythmic dance to which we unavoidably belong to stop and to rest. It is an act of resistance to the world that is actually constantly restless, and is looking for the next thing, right? We can we know this. Studies show this." [00:51:46] (26 seconds)

"And so Sabbath is the grace of God actively at work in our lives. Jesus says this. Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me. Watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace." [00:52:13] (34 seconds)

"Sabbath is a discipline of celebration, of delight, and it's actually a delivery mechanism for joy. Sabbath is where we get an opportunity to enjoy God, to just be in each other's presence." [00:58:52] (18 seconds)

"When we learn the rhythms of Sabbath, and we embrace it into the core of our being of who we are, we become people who are full of joy, like our God, where we delight in God and in His creation, where we look outward towards the ocean, towards the sunrise or the sunset, to listen to the rain that's pattering on the windows, to walk and see the mountains." [01:00:34] (33 seconds)

"God's unforced rhythm of grace is not just about setting aside sin in our lives, but it reshapes our hearts, renews our minds, and equips us to believe in Jesus. And, as I say here, it's much easier to us for god's calling god's grace and this sabbath is the power that carries us upward teaching us to soar into the life that god has designed for us through sabbath we consciously and intentionally put down our work to stop to receive rest to delight in god and his creation and to worship" [01:02:31] (43 seconds)

"Sabbath is a great time to practice silence and solitude an opportunity to listen to god's voice and to close off my story about waking up at 3 a .m because you might be asking me afterwards i'm not sure but i am so thankful to god that because after that brutal session on you know that workout um after the the restlessness you know i'm not sure i'm not sure i'm not sure i'm not sure i am so thankful to god that because what happened after that was i was uh had the opportunity to walk and pray to walk along our beautiful coastline the beautiful beaches that we have living in the eastern suburbs to soak in the warming sun and to feel the cool breeze that was blowing to have a time of quiet reflection you know that morning god restored my soul he renewed my heart and renewed my mind and sustained me in ways that i could not do for myself god's grace was his presence during that time walking along the beach dear church let me encourage you to view sabbath as god's grace and presence to take up jesus offer to receive the unforced rhythms of the gospel and to receive the grace and the presence of the grace to see all of these practices as god's invitation to spend quality time and quantity time with him the challenge for us is this we need we will need to work out what are the things in my life that i need to intentionally stop so as to make space for us to enter into this invitation of sabbath for me even though i worked all those you know those couple of weeks by god's grace he actually sustains me" [01:03:15] (128 seconds)
