Embracing the Necessity of True Joy

Summary

Welcome, everyone. It's a joy to be here with you tonight. I want to talk about something that I believe is essential in our lives right now—joy. Joy is not just a nice-to-have; it's a necessity. It's not merely the absence of sadness or the result of avoiding temptation. Instead, joy is a tangible, visible characteristic of God that should be evident in our lives. It is a reflection of God's character within us, and it is meant to be complete and full.

In John 15, Jesus speaks about joy, saying, "I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete." This passage highlights the importance of remaining in God's love and keeping His commandments as a pathway to experiencing complete joy. Many people today are confused about why they don't find joy, often mistaking it for happiness derived from external circumstances or good behavior. However, true joy is not a result of avoiding temptation or doing the right things; it is a manifestation of God's presence in our lives.

David's story in Psalm 51 illustrates the importance of joy in our spiritual journey. After his transgressions with Bathsheba, David did not question his salvation but rather pleaded with God to restore the joy of his salvation. This shows that joy is not just a byproduct of good behavior but a vital component of our spiritual well-being. When we have joy, we are more inclined to share God's love with others and draw them closer to Him.

To experience the fullness of joy that Jesus offers, we must spend time with God through reading the Bible, worship, and meditation. This joy is not a fleeting emotion but a supernatural gift that sustains us through life's challenges. It is the joy of the Lord that gives us strength, not as a repellent to problems, but as a source of strength to endure them.

In conclusion, we must seek to know the true character of Jesus, who is not a disappointed or angry figure, but one who is full of love and joy. By understanding and embracing this true nature of Jesus, we can experience the fullness of joy that He offers, which is essential for bearing life's burdens and living a fulfilled life.

Key Takeaways:

1. Joy is a necessity, not a luxury. It is a visible characteristic of God's presence in our lives, not merely a result of avoiding sin or doing the right things. True joy is a reflection of God's character within us, and it is essential for living a fulfilled life. [05:18]

2. Joy is not the absence of problems but the strength to endure them. The Bible teaches that the joy of the Lord is our strength, not a repellent for life's challenges. It is the inner strength that helps us navigate through life's burdens, providing us with the resilience to face difficulties with a positive spirit. [15:35]

3. Joy is found in knowing God. It is not something that can be obtained through material possessions or external circumstances. Instead, it is a result of spending time with God, reading the Bible, and engaging in worship and meditation. [15:35]

4. A Christian without joy is a contradiction. Just as a heavenly devil is an oxymoron, a Christian without joy is an anomaly. Joy should be a natural outflow of a life lived in close relationship with God, and it should be evident to others. [12:04]

5. Joy is a supernatural gift that transcends human understanding. It is not merely an emotion but a fruit of the Spirit that provides strength and sustenance through life's challenges. This joy is described in the Bible as "unspeakable and full of glory," and it is available to all who seek a deeper relationship with Jesus. [15:35]

Devotional

Day 1: Joy as a Reflection of God's Character
Joy is not just a fleeting emotion or a result of favorable circumstances; it is a profound reflection of God's character within us. True joy is a necessity, not a luxury, and it is essential for living a fulfilled life. It is a visible characteristic of God's presence in our lives, and it should be evident to others. This joy is not about avoiding sin or doing the right things; it is about embodying the essence of God's love and grace. When we understand that joy is a reflection of God's character, we can begin to see it as an integral part of our spiritual journey. [05:18]

"Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls." (1 Peter 1:8-9, ESV)

Reflection: How can you actively reflect God's character of joy in your daily interactions with others today?

Day 2: Joy as Strength in Adversity
Joy is not the absence of problems but the strength to endure them. The Bible teaches that the joy of the Lord is our strength, providing us with the resilience to face life's challenges with a positive spirit. This joy is not a repellent for life's difficulties but an inner strength that sustains us through them. When we embrace this understanding, we can navigate through life's burdens with a sense of peace and assurance, knowing that God's joy is our source of strength. [15:35]

"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness." (James 1:2-3, ESV)

Reflection: What is one challenge you are currently facing, and how can you rely on God's joy to strengthen you through it today?

Day 3: Joy Found in Knowing God
True joy is found in knowing God, not in material possessions or external circumstances. It is a result of spending time with God, reading the Bible, and engaging in worship and meditation. This joy is a supernatural gift that transcends human understanding, providing strength and sustenance through life's challenges. By cultivating a deeper relationship with God, we can experience the fullness of joy that He offers, which is essential for bearing life's burdens and living a fulfilled life. [15:35]

"You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore." (Psalm 16:11, ESV)

Reflection: How can you intentionally spend time with God today to deepen your relationship and experience His joy more fully?

Day 4: Joy as a Natural Outflow of a Christian Life
A Christian without joy is a contradiction, just as a heavenly devil is an oxymoron. Joy should be a natural outflow of a life lived in close relationship with God, and it should be evident to others. When we live in alignment with God's will and embrace His love, joy becomes a natural expression of our faith. This joy is not just for our benefit but also serves as a testimony to others, drawing them closer to God. [12:04]

"For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." (Romans 14:17, ESV)

Reflection: In what ways can you let your joy in Christ be a testimony to those around you today?

Day 5: Joy as a Supernatural Gift
Joy is a supernatural gift that transcends human understanding. It is not merely an emotion but a fruit of the Spirit that provides strength and sustenance through life's challenges. This joy is described in the Bible as "unspeakable and full of glory," and it is available to all who seek a deeper relationship with Jesus. By understanding and embracing the true nature of Jesus, who is full of love and joy, we can experience the fullness of joy that He offers. [15:35]

"And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit." (Acts 13:52, ESV)

Reflection: How can you open your heart to receive the supernatural gift of joy from the Holy Spirit today?

Quotes

And then the next one, my command is this, love each other as I have loved you. I think that there's something that we're missing as like a church family or just individual Christians. That is, we are missing joy in its completeness. We are missing the fullness of joy as it will later describe it in the Bible. And I would say if I, if there's any question I could ever ask in here of like who needs and who wants joy, I think everyone's hand will go up. I think it's, it could be the most automatic answer other than, are you a Christian who people want to say yes. He could be one of the most automatic answers of anything, of anything that you want, but so many people don't find joy because they're confused at why they don't find joy. And I want to let you know, a lot of people, joy would be this, joy is a display of the character of God on your life. [00:06:35] (60 seconds)

It is not the product of resisting temptation. It is not the product of, I'm bored out of my mind, but I haven't done anything wrong in a really long time. It is not a product of, I am not listening to secular music because I'm trying to be good. I didn't go to the concert because I'm trying to be good. I came to Wednesday night service versus just staying home and cooking because I'm trying to do all the right things. None of those things, when I say joy or what I'm talking about, the things that you think produces joy in your life, I am talking about a tangible, visible characteristic of God that's living and breathing and is set upon your life. And that would be joy to its fullness. I wrote this down. Joy is not a nicety. It's not nice to have, just nice to have. Joy is an absolute necessity. It is something we need to have in our life. [00:07:40] (59 seconds)

Pastor Jordan talked about this. Because in this story, in Psalms 51, is when David is battling all of these thoughts, all of these ideas, and all these problems. So he's just messed up with Bathsheba. He's just killed her man. He's just wrecked the whole kingdom. He's got her pregnant. He's doing all these things. And David is in the middle of a fall apart in Psalms 51. And in the middle of Psalms 51, this, David does not say this. David is not questioning his salvation or his position before God. This is how important joy is into our life as a Christian. David actually says this. God, please restore to me the joy that was in salvation. And then grant me a willing spirit to sustain it. He's not standing there saying, God, I've messed up. I've sinned. I've been wrong. I've done all this stuff. I lost my salvation. No. He is saying, I lost that thing that was in me that brought me from day to day, from glory to glory, from place to place. And I lost that thing that was so special on the inside of me. And it is your joy. And what he's saying in his prayer is, God, restore my joy back to me. And then he goes on and says this. And then when you restore it back to me, then I will teach all the transgressors about your ways so that sinners also will turn back to you. [00:10:35] (88 seconds)

A reason you have to have joy is this. Number one, to bear life's burdens, you have to have the fullness of joy. To bear life's burdens, you are going to have to live. The Bible says this, the joy of the Lord is my strength. It does not say the joy of the Lord is the repellent for all problems. It says the joy of the Lord is the strength that I take on to walk through the burdens of life. [00:13:44] (30 seconds)

And when it talks about receiving joy, if you understand where Jesus is at in this point in his life, when he is talking about joy and he writes the words, I have told you this so that you may have joy in you and joy in its completeness or in its fullness, Jesus was considering Calvary and had just faced Gethsemane. [00:15:00] (20 seconds)

The more you spend time with God, the more his joy becomes yours. You have to read the Bible and worship, certainly spending time in the Word. You cannot see this as black and white words on a newspaper. You have to see this as life itself being given to you as you read it to experience and come to know a real God in real time at that exact moment. And as you get to know God, abiding within him, then joy will follow and joy will fill you. One of the things I wrote down is that joy, the joy, the fullness of joy that Jesus gives is abounding. [00:15:35] (43 seconds)

This is why he could keep going. Hebrews 1, 9 says this. It refers to joy as gladness in all situations. Jude 24 says this. It mentions exceeding joy. And the exceeding joy in that actually means, if it were interpreted, it means the joy that keeps you bouncing and dancing. My son Roman, we've been shooting a lot of basketball, me and Roman and Parker. I got twins. They're nuts. And the best thing to do is make sure we're busy. [00:16:28] (29 seconds)

And so what I would say is this.

And happiness, two minutes. So joy living in your life coupled with natural happiness should be double. It should be better than you've ever known before. It should be better than the Mercedes that your husband let you buy or somebody else's husband let you buy. It should be better. If you've never experienced double, it's because you've had happiness without joy. There's a fullness and a measure of it to where when you walk in seasons of happiness, it's double. [00:34:31] (32 seconds)

Joy is not the removal of problems in your life. Joy is the addition of power to meet those problems when they come. Joy is not the subtraction of problems in your life. Joy is the addition of power to meet the problems when they come in your life. Joy, Paul said like this, In joy I endure the race that's set before me. Pastor Sherwood talked about it on Sunday. How do you throw a party shackled in a jail? Because joy is moving on the inside of you no matter the conditions of what are natural. [00:35:39] (33 seconds)

And I want to let you know this. There's three things that I have scriptures behind. I can give them if you want them. But number one, how you get this is surrender. Complete surrender. There's a story by F .P. Myers. He's the guy that wrote a lot of books. And it said that God asked him for complete surrender. He met someone and was like, There's something so different about you. The guy said, It's joy. And he said, I want that. And he said, Give him everything. What he hadn't given, He was in full -time ministry. He had a, He has a. A thing full of keys. And he said, God, I've given you all of this. You can have it all. Here's the key, here's the key, here's the key, here's the key. And this was his excuse. But because I've given God everything already, I just want to go out on the boat on Saturdays and think nothing about it. And God said, that's the key I want. And he said, God, you can't have that key. And he said, well, then you can't have my joy. And he said, I went home and I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And wrestled with it. And he said, God, you can have it all. And he said, I woke up the next day and I didn't feel like doing backflips. I didn't feel like, oh, I'm healed. Oh, I'm whole. He said, all I knew was for the first time in my life, I was his. And he said, I walked around all day. And then the following week going, oh, my gosh, I'm his. Oh, my gosh, I'm his. Whatever comes may come. Whatever happens may come. But I'm his. I'm his. I'm his. And nothing can affect me outside of I'm his. Surrender is number one. [00:38:15] (92 seconds)

Because you're a part of a branch. You're a vine. Read John 15. You understand that. Rest is the other. John 15 says this. John 15 9 says, but as you do this, continue in my love and rest in it. And this is what Jesus is trying to say. If you will get to know me, I'll do all the work. You don't have to produce joy. You don't got to go knock it down. You don't have to beat the people up that are mad in your life so that they stay away and you get some joy. You don't got to do any of that. If you will just grow to know the character of me and who I am, my character will become your character. And you will receive joy in its fullness and you will live life unlike anyone else has ever lived life. [00:38:35] (45 seconds)

And he said, God, I've given you all of this. You can have it all. Here's the key, here's the key, here's the key, here's the key. And this was his excuse. But because I've given God everything already, I just want to go out on the boat on Saturdays and think nothing about it. God, let me have something. And this key that he held that said, God, just let me have something of my own, was what was keeping him from the joy. And he said that he gave up all the nature of what he wanted. God, I can't give you anything else. I'm already in ministry. Then he gave up even the idea of that sentence in his mind. And it says that he woke up the next day and he didn't feel like doing backflips. He didn't feel like, oh, I'm healed. Oh, I'm whole. He said, all I knew was for the first time in my life, I was his. [00:37:03] (76 seconds)

It is good for you to find indicators of do you have joy in your life that draws people. It is not necessarily the nature of men, even in the Bible days, to just be like, oh yeah, kids are just around me all the time. No, but Jesus was trying to teach them something. One of the displays of joy in God's character on your life is that even kids who can, kids know when I take them into a restaurant and pass tables, I don't want to be around that dude. No, she don't look like someone I'd want to go home with. No, dad, don't sit by this person. Kids know these things, but if you're full of the love and the joy of Jesus, kids will know it before anybody else who have had circumstance and conflict and problems and issues, have anything to say about you. [00:27:03] (46 seconds)

He is saying, he is saying this. I am going somewhere, but if I speak this now on the earth before I leave, then I'm making it available for you to have the full measure of joy in your life, which is him. He's trying to teach them how to have joy. He made sure this was available to us. Philippians 4 says this. Rejoice in the Lord always, and again, I say rejoice. I found this out about this scripture. What's the shortest verse in the Bible? Jesus web. All of us know. In the Greek Bible, this is labeled as the shortest verse in the Greek Bible. Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say rejoice, but it is known in the Greek Bible as the longest, is it speaking to the longest amount of time in your life. It is the shortest verse in the Bible speaking to the longest amount of time in your life. Meaning you are to over all things walk in the fullness of joy in your life more and longer than you walk in anything else. [00:28:15] (64 seconds)

The difference in joy and happiness that we seek is happiness is the search for all things natural. Joy is the search for all things supernatural. Happiness depends on what happens. Joy, nothing that happens can change it. It's not an emotion. Joy is not an emotion. It's a fruit. It's a fruit of being close to the character of God and sharing in it until it becomes your character alive on the inside of you. Fruit, God is trying to do things what we don't realize. God is so good. God wants to do things eternal. The things he gives, he wants to be everlasting. The world and the place you live is seasonal. He wants to give us things that last through the seasons. They're actually meant and built to carry you through the seasons. He wants to give you unseasonal fruit that helps you through a seasonal world. [00:31:41] (67 seconds)

And I want to let you know this. There's three things that I have scriptures behind. I can give them if you want them. But number one, how you get this is surrender. Complete surrender. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it. And I wrestled with it.
